Strobes for take-off/landing & below 10,000 ASL. Wheel well light is for walk-around inspection at night. Steady is the navigation lights.(on all the time)

Steady are your red and green NAV lights - Steady and Strobe is the switch to turn on your strobe lights. You turn on Steady when you are boarding and using the plane. basically all the time. Then when you cross a runway or prepare to take off you flight the switch to strobe and steady which keeps both strobes and nav lights on.

While taxiing I keep it on steady or if im at the gate. I switch it to strobe and steady once im on the runway. Wheel well lights are used I believe if you are doing the walk around.

As far as I can recall Steady/Nav lights are always on when the aircraft is under electrical power. Strobes are turned on as soon as you enter a runway and turned off when leaving it (so they're on for the complete flight).

Thx Gents and Girls for your replayes ;)

remember than when crossing a runway, you usually switch them on as well. (strobe)

Above FL180, strobes can be turned off during day operations, Nav lights can also be left off at Captains discretion between Dawn and Dusk.. Depends on company policy within Federal Aviation Regulations..

1. Nav lights on when power is on the aircraft (APU, GPU, or engines running).2. Rotating beacon on when engines are running.3. Taxi lights on when clear of the parking ramp.4. Strobe lights on when taking or crossing an active runway.5. All lights on for takeoff.6. Landing or recog lights remain on until 10,000 ft .

Taxi lights on when clear of the parking ramp. (not required during daylight hours at night taxi light off just after takeoff)4. Strobe lights on when taking or crossing an active runway. (Strobe lights off if told to line up and wait, turned on when cleared for takeoff and can be turned off during day above FL180)5. All lights on for takeoff. (retractable landing lights optional)6. Landing or recog lights remain on until 10,000 ft . (Runway turnoff lights on until FL180 at night)
Just wanted to add Steve, hope you don't mind.. cheers..

That is only partially correct, also as some companies have their own rules which state that certain lights have to be on at all times and there is a world beyond FAA as well.

You may also want to use the Nose Wheel Well light, when viewing to check that the nose gear is Down & Locked , when in flight, and there is some concern that the nose gear is not fully extended, and Locked. ?? assuming this is present on the NG ?? Geoff

Thx Gents,Tony you say FL180 Strobe OFF, is this FAA(world) rule or is it diffrent on soem companies, can I make it OFF on FL100 or is it a rule to have them on intil FL180.... Or you set it to "Steady" you never turn it OFF right? You just switch it between "Strobe and Steady" , say Strobe ON from lineup RNW up until Alt FL180, then use Steady/Nav........

I would think that a lot of companies require strobes on from the time the aircraft enters the active runway, takeoff, throughout the flight, then after landing and exiting the runway they are switched off. I live in an area that has traffic fly over all of the time from approach and departure at KPHL to planes at cruise, and I always see the strobes on every single aircraft all of the time. I may be wrong as there sure are a lot of aircraft throughout the world flying at any given time, but just from what I've seen anyway. Very good question by the way. :) Best regards, Jeff Moss

I think it depends where you're flying. For example, transatlantic flights require strobes on 24/7 but in less dense area's, I believe it's just strobes on at night.
