Above FL180, strobes can be turned off during day operations, Nav lights can also be left off at Captains discretion between Dawn and Dusk.. Depends on company policy within Federal Aviation Regulations..
Speaking of which, I believe Delta has their SOP stipulate that landing lights are on once below FL180 and the beacon is turned on from blocks off to blocks on...I believe thats how Delta keeps track of pay for the pilots via ACARS. I heard a crew at JFK one time turned the beacon on and then sat at the gate for an hour or so with blocks still on....they got into some trouble over that one....

Poor word usage: HYDRAULICS PRESSURIZED would be correct. One incident that I can barely recall:It had something to do with the either the nose gear or push back not being straight when connected. So when the hydraulics were turned on the bar snapped (not the bar itself, but the pins keeping everything straight. The phrase where I was, "popped the bar" was not entirely accurate) from the hydraulic power and took out someone's legs. Very scary to see the tow bar "pop". In some cases the push back and the nose gear bounce around like those hydraulic cars in the videos... Also, in case some folks did not know, the red line painted on the nose gear is the limit of turn you can turn the wheel during push back. If you exceed that line, there is a good chance of poping the bar. In the MD80/90 if you exceeded (or were close to exceeding) that line you could see the outter nose gear wheel come off the ground... Not a good sight.

One thing are the correct names, and another one is jargon. The CDU is called "the box". We've recently learned the altitude range arc is usually called "the green banana".... and when on the ground you say "pressurize" in the context of pre-flight flows, it usually refers to hydraulics.

I'm only speaking of company policy when I post something, I should clarify that.. I don't know the rules and company procedures in other parts of the world.. Yes, landing lights can be turned on at FL180 on approach, strobes if told to line up and wait will be off, it's a courtesy to other pilots in line until takeoff clearance is received, then on just before takeoff roll.. Another thing we do is turn off strobes in IMC conditions in the air, especially if you're around lightning..

I'm sure SKEWR meant hydraulic pressure, check FCOM vol. 1, NP.21.31
No, this thread is about when to turn on Strobes landing lights etc. Someone suggested that that cabin is pressuised on the ground (which it is not) and the STrobes are turned on to indicate this. Read the post by JC75 which addresses the issue of lights and when they should be used. Hydraulic pressure, cabin pressure or (blood pressure) have nothing to do with the usage of lights.

Beacon would be used also by ground ops! even when engines and APU are off!If a plane gets towed from a parking pos. to a passenger pos, the becon will be turn on as well!To put it in a nutshell: Beacon light is a warning light for the ground staff and other aircrafts too...

Yes, of course it is all about lights, did I say anything different? I provided the FCOM Normal Procedures reference to show that SKEWR probably meant hydraulics/brake pressure - which he also confirmed later, in fact just 3 posts above your reply. This was to refine JC75's list concerning the time when the rotating beacons go on, i.e. a few moments before you start pushback.
