September 3, 201114 yr I'm a relatively new user of VOX and I've really come to like it so far. Some of you folks have been around it much long so I'd like to ask this question. Is the VOX developer just one person or is it a group of people? It almost seems he's like "The Wizard of OZ", always unseen behind the curtain. I'm not implying that it's a bad thing but usually developers will make an appearance in forums from time to time. Again, not a big deal. I'm just curious.
September 3, 201114 yr As far as I know it is a one man show; Tegwyn is the developer. He doesn't seem to come on the forum, which is perhaps why this is an unofficial forum.I've had several exchanges with Tegwyn and he is very friendly and helpful. If you have any direct issues with the software I suggest you email him directly at [email protected] has always worked hard to address issues I've brought to his attention.Chris
September 3, 201114 yr Author Hi Chris, Thanks for the response. I think the issues I have Tegwyn is probably aware of. I'd like to see Vox handle AI traffic a little better and small things like adding "descend at pilots discretion" and a little more imagination with transponder codes. These things are not show stoppers by any stretch. I occasionally have a glitch where ground control won't give me taxi instructions. I haven't used an ATC program yet that didn't have its' own set of quirks. Vox is no different.
September 4, 201114 yr I encourage you to email Tegwyn if you have anything you'd like to suggest like that. I'm trying out the demo and am 80% happy with it -- although I need higher to pay for something this expensive. That said, I've had a handful of emails with him and he's very nice and quick to respond. If he could get AI traffic to work at airports beyond just the departure and arrival airports (I don't like filing plans for VFR flights) and also not keep telling me I can't do a touch and go at an airport without traffic, I'd be pretty much ready to pull the trigger. It is impressive for what it does and so close to greatness.

It could get messy, but it would give you traffic as you pass other airports. Chris
September 4, 201114 yr I would like to see some more imagination in Transponder codes as well. For awhile, I was hearing "Information Bravo" a lot on ATIS, but then I heard "Information Delta" and a little later "Information Echo". Hopefully, he's working on making it a little more random and not in alphabetical order. Also, taxi instructions seem to be messed up at times. I'll be advised to take a certain route when taxiing in, and there will be another aircraft coming the opposite way towards me. I've also seen taxi instructions that utilize runways instead of a taxiway, so traffic has to go down it and then turn around. This is on 5.63, so I'm not sure if it has been improved with v6. I agree that the other ATC programs have their quirks too, but I've done a lot of reading and researching before I finally settled on VoxATC and I quite like it. It's not perfect, but it's still better than the default ATC. My other choice would have been ProFlight Emulator (which I might still get), but I settled on VoxATC first because of the voice interaction. It's more fun than clicking menu options, and easier to set up than a third party voice recognition program to work with PFE or RC4. I love flying casually in a Cessna 172 to explore, plus I love to tie it all in with creative stories. Read about my latest flight story and blog here: http://starrfoxx-flys.blogspot.com/
September 5, 201114 yr Author I have used both RC4 and PFE. Like I said, they all have their quirks. i'd like to put them all in a bag, shake them up, and take the best of all three. I don't think you can do that though!

I don't think you can do that though! Out of curiosity, in your opinion what does RC4 and PFE do better than Vox? One thought was AI handling or recognition, and PFE has all the regional voices (not too big a deal if you change voices around on Vox). How about the ATC itself? I only ask, because I wanted to get RC4 for a long time, but waited until there was Taxi handling. Then I recently discovered PFE and Vox, and I opted to go with Vox first since I like to get the vocal practice before doing Vatsim flying. September 5, 201114 yr I would like to know if RC handles not following the rules better than Vox. I seem to be able to confuse it really well. Just last night I was doing touch and go practice and on my final landing I couldn't get the tower to understand I was going to do a full stop landing. I landed and then taxied clear of the runway. Tower kept saying "Last aircraft say again" after twenty attempts of telling it I was clear of runway. I then said screw it and tuned to Ground and asked for taxi to gates which was told "Unable at this time" followed instantly by "Taxy to RW24 etc etc" I couldn't get it to understand I wanted to park not fly! Also, Vox loves to tell me "Unable at this time" way too often. It is painfully quirky. Enough so that I am unsure I can spend the amount the author wants for it. At that price I expect a pretty robust package. That said, when it works I do love it. The practice and experience of actually talking to an ATC is great.

Fly over England, you get controllers with British accents, fly over Germany.... PFE take more effort to set up a flight where Vox all you have to do is put in the airline and flight # and away you go. Like I said, they al have their pluses and minuses.

I agree that Vox is much easier to set up, and I'm looking forward to v6 when I get it. I think I'll still get PFE eventually, but to go with FS9 on my laptop. Then I can have the best of both worlds. :-) I love flying casually in a Cessna 172 to explore, plus I love to tie it all in with creative stories. September 5, 201114 yr Author That's what I do, I use PFE for FS9. You can use Sids/Stars with PFE but you have to assign them when you set up the flight.
September 6, 201114 yr I would like to see some more imagination in Transponder codes as well. For awhile, I was hearing "Information Bravo" a lot on ATIS, but then I heard "Information Delta" and a little later "Information Echo". Hopefully, he's working on making it a little more random and not in alphabetical order. I agree that it would nice not to always start at 'Information Bravo', however ATIS updates do occur in alphabetical order in real life, so VoxATC is accurately following this sequence. Chris
September 6, 201114 yr VOX does something nothing else does, it actually will alter your flight plan in route, that impresses me. However, it does seem to have a weakness in handling geography, like telling you to descent below MSA, so far I just work around that. RC4 does a betterjob of that, but its more repetitive in its behavior too. The ground behavior is bizarre, planes being given permission to cross 28L when 10Ris in use :) Doesn't seem that hard of a programming job to avoid that, but oh well. I alsouse UT2 and see landings that are broken, etc. I agree with Mike, I wish we could take the best of each and come up with some fusion, but short of company mergers that is not going to happen. At the moment I am usingVOX because it provides the most novel and/or interesting flights. Jack F. Vogel, Delta Virtual Airlines
September 6, 201114 yr Well I finally completed my first IFR flight with Vox after a few attempts where the controllers were too busy to talk to me and I must say when this program works it's great! I also feel like I need to just say "blah blah" on my first time saying anything as I always get "Say again" and I am always understood the second time around. So I'm still on the fence since half of my usage of it is frustrating but the other half does provide a truly unique experience to FSX.
