September 6, 201114 yr Hi all, Shopping around for a GTX 570. I keep reading the reviews(as well as lots of helpful forum posts here) and I am going back and forth between the 570 and 580. I currently have a 285 and I think the card has reached it max potential with my current clock speeds, addons etc etc. Has anybody with specs similar to mine upgraded to a 570? Will this card perform well on my system at the high resolution that I run FSX?(1920X1080). I also run at the high levels of AA and AF suggested by Ryan in the PMDG forum. I think I have settled on EVGA for the brand. I am also going back and forth on a pretty standard card vs the "superclocked" version. Scott KGPI
September 6, 201114 yr You won't see much improvement in FSX. September 6, 201114 yr If you do this upgrade than framerate will be up a little, but chances are that FSX will run smoother. But that depends on how detailed you set the graphics card settings, like AA and AF. You can do a small test : set the resolution one step less lower and AA+AF too.If you see a raise of 10% in framerate or more than a faster card will help. I have ssen an improvement in both framerate and smoothness after upgrading from a GTX470 1280mb to a GTX580 1536mb. September 6, 201114 yr I just upgraded from an 280 OC to en eVGA 570 SC.I for sure noticed a performance improvement while running higher levels of AA. (8xSQ + 2x Transparency SS)Also texture loading is much faster and way less (almost none) (micro) stutters. This is with a tweaked fsx.cfg So for me it was worth it. I opted for the 570 and not the 580 because of price difference. 580 might be better when running multi-monitor on smame card with very high resolutions. (I'm running 1920x1200) One thing: the card is rather noisy under full load in FSX. Lennart

It was smoother...I later got a 580 which didn't change much until I went with the 2600k CPU.
September 8, 201114 yr Author So the consensus here is that a 570 will provide "smoother" flight at higher resolutions, but I shouldn't expect 300 dollars worth of flying improvement? Scott KGPI

Max temp from my old GTX280 was around 45 degrees C, with 560ti , it easily gets to 65% in summer, and thats with no OC. So the sound you hear is the video card's cooling fan working very hard to cool it down.
September 9, 201114 yr So the consensus here is that a 570 will provide "smoother" flight at higher resolutions, but I shouldn't expect 300 dollars worth of flying improvement? For me, it absolutely was worth the 300 bucks for FSX alone. However, DCS: A10 and Il-2: CoD also saw a very nice performance increase. So the sound you hear is the video card's cooling fan working very hard to cool it down. I'm looking into a after market cooler for my card. The standard cooler is a bit too noisy for me. Lennart
September 13, 201114 yr Author Went with this card guys: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130692 Might use the step up program in a few months. Scott KGPI

September 13, 201114 yr Please report after you have tried the new card and let us know if the upgrade was worth it.
September 14, 201114 yr Author Got the card yesterday and did the install. I am running the latest Nvidia drivers. 1st impressions flying out of KSEA(using the PMDG 737): MUCH MUCH Smoother overall. About a 5-7 FPS increase which gets me from the 10-12 (slide show)FPS range to the 14-17 FPS range on 34R at KSEA with REX, ORBX PNW and 50% on UT2 commercial traffic. I also have no other AI. I am running 8XSQ(2X supersampling) with 16xAF at 1920X1080. Climbing out of Seattle is now in the 18-25 FPS range. Inbound to CYLW is now smooth as silk at 25-30FPS. Not scientific at all guys, but overall a much better experience. My GTX 285OC was pegged at 90+ GPU utilization(afterburner) all the time in KSEA especially with lots of overcast. This new GPU seems to be in the 50% range now and it seems to handle the REX clouds better. I am going to do a lot more flying in and out of KSFO(I have the flightbeam version) as well as KSEA and KGPI(my hometown airport) over the next few months before I decide on using the step up program. I need to weigh the options between stepping up to a 580 or waiting and getting into a 2600k. Scott KGPI
