Help! Windows 7 issue - switching menus, screen goes black on return

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone: Recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7 64 bit. It seems that most times when I go to a menu in FSX (like to save a flight for example) and I then return to FSX, the screen goes black or the graphics just keep flickering and then I have to restart FSX. The same happens sometimes when I go outside of FSX to launch a program like Radar Contact. When I return, the graphics are all messed up and the screen is either black or most of the items like the airport have either disappeared or the graphics are flickering. Even a redraw of the scenery does not fix it. I am certain I have the right Chip set and the latest drivers for my NVIDIA G force GTX 280 card. This is so annoying. Does anyone have any ideas? Search online for uiautomationcore.dll - put it in the FSX root folder - see if that helps. Do NOT replace the one in your Windows System32 folder. Vic

Is there any error message(s) in the Windows 7 Event Viewer like a 3D video card driver not loading properly? You should check for an error every time you had the crash or black screen. You didn't indicate you did this but Microsoft has a troubleshooting link for this problem - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925722 . I personally think you are putting too much pressure on your video card and/or CPU and you are losing memory (yes, I know you have 8 GB installed. FSX can't use all of that). So, do you have your FSX settings (sliders) set to the right? FSX just doesn't manage memory very well. I would save the FSX.cfg within FSX (at the startup screen in settings) and call it something like MyFavorite and then reset all your settings to the default. If that fixes the problem, I'm right about too much pressure on your system. If not, you can reload MyFavorite FSX.cfg you saved and continue searching for a solution. A bad overclock or overheating will cause this problem too. You also want to make sure your dotnet software is up-to-date through the Windows Update. Windows 7 installs Microsoft .Net Framework 4 with the OS. It has been updated several times since Windows 7 was first released. You might install an earlier version, like .Net 3.5 which is used by several FSX addon developers to run and install their software - http://www.microsoft.com/net . That's all the suggestions I have for now. I think one of them will fix your problem. Best regards,Jim

Are you using a frame limiter App? If so, try taking it out of the FSX folder and restart without it

Hi: I never get any error messages of any type. What is interesting is that I am running the same setup as I was running in XP, only now I am getting these graphical errors, and now, I have have 8 GB of RAM instead of 2. I will have to trouble shoot as you suggested. It is just so strange that I did not have these errors when I ran XP with less RAM. Thanks, Chris

No - no frame limiter App. Thanks, Chris

Well, did you try the UIAtomationCore.dll fix that vgbaron suggested? Cheers, - jahman.

OK- just tried the the UIAtomationCore.dll that was suggested, and no luck. Same issues. As soon as I try to close down FS Passengers and return to the sim, the graphics go crazy with flickering and certain oblects such as the airport or my aircraft just disappearing. I tried both versions of the UIAtomationCore.dll (version 6.0.6001.1800 and also version 6.0.5840.16386). I merely dropped the dll in the FSX root directory and tried my flight from KCLE to KBUF. No luck. I gues this particular dll will not fix my problem... Chris

OK, then it's something else, but you should still keep the UIAutomationCore.dll (the later version) in your FSX directory. Cheers, - jahman.

i have this exact problem and finally iv'e found someone else with it too! and yes i've tried all of those fixes as well with no luck, I don't know about you Chris, but I can't even go to the esc menu(end flight, resume flight, flight analysis) withiut returning to either a black screen or half of the games textures magically gone! So frustrating when you accidentaly press escape instead of ` to access the atc halfway through a flight.I'll be sure to post anything usefull I come across hereThanks,Irish

The latest graphics driver isnt always the best one, especially when it comes to an old title like FSX with old hardware like the GTX280

Are you using any of the mods that install into FSX using the d3d9.dll method? Antilag, ENB mod, and FXAA have been all the rage lately and they all cause this very scenario for me. I can't use any of them as a result.

Maybe your [bufferPools] setting is set too high or too low. I was just reading Nick N's excellent article on setting up FSX and tuning it and he mentions this can happen if the Bufferpool setting is set too high for your video card. For the poolsize for your card he suggests something between 450000000 and 490000000. This setting is not placed in the default FSX.cfg and it's known as a "tweak" so you may not have any setting in your config. Best regards,Jim

Have a similar problem posted on Aug 8th, no replies Changing the menu from day to/night whilst at KJFK I still think it has something to do with AES. Posted also on Aerosoft and Dreamteam along with the photo's but they were unable to help.

hey firehawk, what bufferpool settings do you suggest for a gtx460 1gb? Thanks Again,Irish
