September 27, 201114 yr Is it possible to have an engine flameout, resulting in an engine failure? Each time I select the enging flame-out in the programmed failures, the engine fails shortly but then it autostarts right again, is this how a engine flameout is in a real ng? I just thought an engine flameout often resulted in a complete angine failure, but I might be mistaken :) Is it possible to get a complete engine fauliure where you would have to go through the shut down and inflight start procedures? September 27, 201114 yr BOTH of mine flamed out. And did not restart. However I HAD run out of fuel... Good deadstick though so no worries for pax or company.
September 27, 201114 yr Good deadstick though so no worries for pax or company. Unless your power runs dry and you lose all hydraulics before you can land, It happened to me and wasn't healthy!
September 27, 201114 yr Author But is it supposed to restart automaticly or are the engines suppose to fail after a flameout? Anders Weber ATPL(A) Student EKBI - Billund, Denmark
September 27, 201114 yr Well if there is no other damage I can't see why it wouldn't start back up. Tyler St. Peter Specs- i7-950 OC@ 3.4Ghz, Asus P6TSE, ATI HD5770, 750W PSU, Water cooled, Hitachi 1TB HDD
September 27, 201114 yr Commercial Member Guys, a 'flameout' in general, with no other further explanation can be as simple as the engine just lost its flame (the flame went out -> flameout). This most often occurs in heavy precip (one of the many reasons to use CONT on takeoff/landing). This can also be the result of foreign object ingestion (birds, etc), or other factors. Again, if there's no other cause, it's generally okay to restart and get going again (though you'd want to land as soon as possible, just in case). If it was caused by ingestion, or some other failure, you're not getting it back. Flamout <> Failure Kyle Rodgers
September 27, 201114 yr Author But I can not tell any difference before and after the flameout :) It takes maybe 10 seconds, and then the engine is up running like nothing happenend. I just thought that it sometimes let to failure, and then you would have to do the inflight restart? Anders Weber ATPL(A) Student EKBI - Billund, Denmark
September 27, 201114 yr I think when the N2 is high enough the engine will come back itself by windmilling. Don't blame me but I think the N2 value was about 22%. John Rubens
September 28, 201114 yr Author Okay, so if nothing happends, and the N2 is high enough it will just restart it self? Anders Weber ATPL(A) Student EKBI - Billund, Denmark
September 28, 201114 yr There is flameout protection and auto-relight on the NG. I suppose you'd need to create two failures to get a flameout: The flameout, like you programmed and; The auto-ignition system If the engine did flameout, you could attempt a restart. You'd want to make sure that there wasn't any damage to the engine before you did so by looking at the engine parameters - is there N1 and N2 rotation, high vibration, etc. Matt Cee
