Intel Core i7 3930K 4.8GHz w/FSX Quick Review

Featured Replies

I just built my new system. My old system was i7-920 @3.9GHZ with GTX260 SSD Force 3 and 6GB GSkill RAM

New system Gigabyte x79-ud3 i7-3930K @3.2 Ghz stock speed!! GTX570 16GB RAM 1600mhz

My usual test site is at ORBX Melbourne with REX2 and all eye candy on.

With the old system I was getting around 6fps but with the new one today I was getting 16-18fps!!! also the textures looked much more realistic and the motion was more fluid. I absolutely agree with this original post the 3930K is a an absolute monster and I am yet to overclock it!

I am sure the PCIE3 also helps along with the fast memory but yes this CPU is definitely better than the 2600K or 2700K.

Hihgly recommended. I could not wait for Ivy to come out but I no longer need to with this setup. First time I am very happy with FSX since it's release.

You have no PCIe 3.0 there Bandyair

how expensive is the 3930k ?

Around $600.00 not cheap but well worth the investment.

Dazz check again:)

It's written next to the slot:)

Although Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 mainboard is an entry-level product, it features four PCI Express 3.0/2.0 x16 slots and therefore allows building 4-Way/3-Way/2-Way AMD CrossFireX or NVIDIA SLI graphics configurations.

Not with a GTX 570. YOu need a PCIe 3.0 GPU along with a PCIE 3.0 motherboard and CPU.

Check in GPU-Z, you'll see you're running at PCIe 2.0

I knew you were gonna say that but in some respect the overall bandwith on the motherboard surely helps. Regardless of this my point was the CPU not the GPU it's giving me 3 times the frame rate no arguing there!

Any chance you would be able to find time to run FSXMark11 exactly as described in the documentation. Then your machine could be the first 3930K added to the list (see pinned topic).

What's your total CPU utilisation % in that test at ORBX Melbourne please?

Sure I'll try to get it done in the next couple of days and post it here.

CPU utilization peaked at 55% when the fps was lowest at 17.6. Cores 1 3 5 7 9 and 11 were fully used and the other 6 virtual cores about 20-25%.

Starting overclocking tomorrow. I would upload a screenshot if I knew how. I've never seen FSX fully utilising all physical cores!!??

I upgraded from an i7 2600k to an i7 3930k. I get a little faster load times which I timed with a stopwatch, and a noticed that textures sharpen up a little faster when I stop of slewing around quickly in FSX. I also get a few percent higher frame rate in my own benching in FSX compared to my i7 2600k (I think it's because mainly of the larger L3 cache of the 3930k and the higher memory bandwidth of the 3930k vs the 2600k as the frame rate didn't drop even I disabled 2 cores in the BIOS for my 3930k). However, my stuttering in FSX is worse than on the 2600k and I had to resort to tweaking my FSX.cfg file to get it to near the smoothness of my 2600k without a tweaked FSX.cfg file. I just don't know why I can't get it to run as smooth as my i7 2600k, I double it's because of a little higher L3 cache latency, since I actually got an overall little higher frame rate.

Hmm strange no stutters for me in fact the whole experince is very smooth. What video card ram and mobo are you using?

I'm using a GTX 580 video card and an Asus P9X79 Pro motherboard and it came with the latest BIOS. Try taking off from LAX and then land at LAX and then do some taxing afterwards. This is probably where I expererience the worse stutters.

so thats with all your settings cranked up?

Pretty much except autogen density 1 notch back from max. With all sliders maxed out I get around 15-16fps at the most demanding airports and cities with addons. I just overclocked the CPU, without much hassle I got it stable at 4.5GHZ and I noticed performmace increase by approx 15-20%. When I will have the time I will do the official tests as requested above.

Just tested KLAX with REX2 weather fully maxed out at dawn with all lights etc on stormy weather I was getting average 18-19FPS. I am happy with that for now. With more precise tweeking I am quite certain I can hit or near 5Ghz so that should mean another 10% increase in performance hopefully.

Just did please see my previous post. KLAX seems quite smooth for me fully maxed out but of course I may be more tolerant in that regard. What FPS are you getting exactly where are your sliders? I only did a brief test there but come long weekend I will do some more thorough testing. I think it may come down to using SSD so loading is much faster it made a huge difference for me, are you using SSD or normal HDD. Just thinking...

ahh one thing I forgot to mention. After I built the new pc. (I run an IT company) The pc kept freezing but only in games and FSX for no apperent reason no BSOD nothing in the logs the whole system just locked periodically. So figured even it had a recent bios the very latest had to installed. Since then the whole experience is smoother and much more stable.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to update you all on some further testing. I discovered that the PMDG 747-8i was providing a 10-15FPS increase compared to other addon's and since all of my initial testing was conducted with the PMDG 747-8i, I did experience a more fluid flying experience when I initially installed FSX. However, after further testing with various addon's and FSX default aircraft, the performance is nearly identical to a 2600K processor at 4.8/5GHz. Therefore, I conclude that the assertions made by many of you, in that FSX does not utilize all of the processor cores are indeed valid. Lastly, regardless of whether 3 cores or 6 cores are active, the FPS remains the same.

Hi Jacob,

I am coming from i7-950, using triple monitors in surround. I am looking at upgrading my system for more power. Since this report, and the fact that you have tried so many processor, what do you recommend? What I am looking for is sustained performance, in other words, the minimum FPS is more important than the maximum. The earlier result from Ivy does not come close to the i7-3930, so I am re-evaluating my options.

Thanks

Yea the Ivy bridge doesn't look as good as we all had hoped... http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ivy-bridge-benchmark-core-i7-3770k,3181.html

I cannot believe they even bothered with trying to improve the on-board graphics, but I guess that is the way of the future smaller and handheld. I am guessing in a year or two that they will start developing the high end Ivy's just like they did with the Sandy's.
