January 1, 201214 yr It has not been publicly announced yet, but someone I met with last week, who's on the Reno Air Race Committee, told me that due to the tragedy last September, where 11 people lost their lives and dozens more were injured, some very seriously, those involved with the Air Races just can't go on with the event. The RARA officials, before making the actual public announcement of the ending of the Reno Naitonal Air Races after a 48 year run, are looking at what they are going to replace them with, before going public.Steve (Bear) CartwrightReno, NV
January 1, 201214 yr That's too bad. Really liked the races. They should continue. Just like the shuttle continued.JimCYWG

January 1, 201214 yr I suspect the decision may have come about as a result of not only the obvious tragedy and the very real toll something like that takes on folks but also the serious challenges of staging another event of that type after suffering such a horrendous accident. For example, who would step forward and insure these races again and, if there is such a source available, what changes would they and the relevant authorities require as necessary prerequisites? It is possible in my mind that, even if you could overcome the negative effects of such an accident in human interest terms, you could very well not overcome the effect of the necessary changes to the event altering that event to the extent that its original character and the reason folks went to witness it in the first place was destroyed. January 1, 201214 yr I remember FS2k2 almost didn't happen let alone FS2k4 and FSX after the 9/11 tragedies. Things happen it doesn't mean you crawl up under a rock and cancel everything... The show must go on... I'm sure Jimmy Leeward would have wanted it that way.I always wondered what happened with a third party effort for this event in Flight Simulator. With this closure news it would be nice if Shez or someone did something for this airport and the historic event that took place there. The Reno Air Races was ground zero for this type of flying which held events around the world (I wonder if all that's going to stop as well). FS9 already has the pillars, I guess it would be nice if someone could create bleachers and stands commemorating the Reno Air Races. Something on the level of what Microsoft did with Oshkosh would be perfect... Hopefully like FS2k2 organizers and insurance agencies come to their senses and realize mistakes and misfortunes happen, that's life. January 4, 201214 yr Well I guess for those involved if you heart is not in it anymore then that may be the deciding factor. It is too bad Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
