My new PC build

Hey Im new to this forum and would appreciate the experts on here glancing an eye over my new system, and tell me there honest thoughts on how well FSX would run? Or advise me on any changes that would be beneficial.Specs are: i7 2600K 3.4 Oc to 4.8ASUS P8Z68 v/gen pci-e ready 3.0 with x fire and sli8 GB DDR3 2133mhz rip saw ram3gb AMD Radeon 7970intel 520 series 250gb SSD 6/gbsThanks for any help.James

Looks like it will run nicely with a lot of games, but I would just like to say:CPU-2600k, great CPU but you could also go for the 2500k. Very similar and for $100. Also not to set your hopes too high for the OCing, you may only be able to get 4.5GHz. Also might want to point out what sorta cooling. Others around here might say wait for Ivy Bridge which will take advantage of the PCIe Gen 3 on the 7970 and a lot of other game changers.Motherboard-Great, nothing wrong with it.RAM-Also great, I have G.Skill and had no problems.GPU-Although at the moment it is the #1 GPU, and this isn't just because i prefer nVidia, it may not be the best for FSX. nVidia lately has been best for FSX so a GTX 580 may be better, MAY though. But then again if your going to wait for Ivy Bridge, you may as well wait for Kepler which could be out soon as well.SSD-Also great, and very reliable are Intel ones.

hey Andrew, thank you for the reply, this is the changes i have made after further research. I have now ordered this system so fingers crossed it will be good. I was lead to believe that this processor and mobo will be PCI--e 3.0 enabled?JamesProcessor Overclocked Intel® Six Core i7-3930K (3.2GHz @ max 4.6GHz) Motherboard ASUS® SABERTOOTH X79: SOCKET 2011, R.O.G RAM 8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz, X.M.P (2 x 4GB KIT) Graphics Card 3GB AMD RADEON™ HD7970 - DVI,HDMI,2 mDP - DX® 11, Eyefinity 4 Capable Hard Disk 120GB KINGSTON HYPERX SSD, SATA 6 Gb/s (upto 555MB/sR | 510MB/sW)

had to cut back on a few things like ram and ssd, otherwise the price was epic!

JayThat may be the wrong RAM for the 3930 I'm pretty sure that it was designed for quad core DDR3 RAM and most specs call for 16GB to match the cpu. Just check to see if you can run dual channel ddr3 ram on that cpu and mobo without affecting performance and likewise that 8GB won't affect too.ReagrdsPeterH.

Peter, Thank-you saved my bacon had to quickly tweek the specs, i now have 16GB KINGSTON HYPERX GENESIS QUAD-DDR3 1600MHz X.M.P . Should this setup run PCI-e 3.0? CheersJames

Yes, i7-3930K + X79 board + HD7970 = PCIe 3.0You can check it with GPU-Z (Bus Interface)And please, run FSMark11 so we can get an idea of how that bad boy performs

Just wait for Ivy Bridge. It should be out within maybe 1-2 months. When paired with a new AMD or Kepler GPU, it will be well worth the wait.

Ben,Looking at your rig, will it be worth the upgrade and what can we expect in terms of fps increase? The BP=0 has given us added performance, but as you know is still not enough in certain locations with certain payware. Will we ever see 30s in FSX?

With an Ivy Bridge processor, you will unlock the full bandwidth of PCIe3. This will give us an immediate jump up to 10-15% in heavy autogen. Also, with the new Kepler lineup featuring a 512bit memory interface, that will also add another 10% of performance.I am very confident that with a Nvidia Kepler GTX680 and a Intel Core i7 3770K@5GHZ, we will unlock the full potential of FSX at maximum settings.

Thank you and I'm looking forward to the new technology with optimism.

But 10% if you FPS are already pretty low is not even noticeable. 22 instead of 20, not worth hundreds for the upgrade IMO.

Should be getting the comp next week, so I will run fsx benchmark then. Will follow up with a post. Thank you for the help.Jay

I'm eagerly awaiting tests with working PCIe 3.0 hardware in FSX. But do we have any reliable performance reports of the HD7970 on PCIe 2.0 in FSX yet? You cant switch between the two in the BIOS of the Sabertooth as far as I can see. It will bee good to get more reports on the HD7970.

10% for PCIe3, 10% - 15% for higher OC'ability. That is from 20-25 FPS. And from 45-56.I really believe that with an IB chip OC'ed to 5+GHZ paired with a new PCIe3 card, the performance jump will be very nice.
