Lufthansa pilots learn how to fy in Phoenix Arizona. They are using the Beechcraft Bonanza. There they are learning the basics of flying an aircraft. How to recover a stall and etc. After that they are flying with a Cessna Citation CJ1+ back in Germany. So they don't jump right in the cockpit of an real airliner. the basics are important.
Paul, they won't start on the twin. They will go single first.Daniel
Check this out!!

Funny how this thread has gone from 'learn to fly' to 'union rules'.This video may 'out' Colgan, but it simply hijacks the thread with no purpose. It has nothing to do with the thread.
NEVER will I put down the shine, hahaha. Anyway, I saw a documentary where a regional pilot moved to the left seat with about 800TT , Freaky!!.. The documentary is called "Flying Cheap".. I was shocked myself that they would bust a rule like that. It was Pinnacle Airlines I believe...Edit.. I just watched a clip, my 800TT was inaccurate, he moved to Capt. position in 9 mos with 500 hours TT.. Yes, that's 500.. Holyyyyy Poo poo..
You guys know nothing about aviation if you are shocked about Captains with 500 hours. Regional airlines are 'can do' and yes they pay low but I don't see the pilots putting their hands up to work in a diner.

Maybe you should get to know some pilots and do some real flight training.

If you think Regionals are a bit scary you don't want to know what some BIG airlines are up to.While not scary it would enlighten you to the facts of the current situation in the aviation industry.

So here's how it goes in the states...You start on a single piston....then move your way up. simple as thatsomeone mentioned that they were surprised that a captain had never been in the real thing before doing a revenue flight? Happens 100% of the time now a days. Even with new FOs. Everything is done in the sim. then an FO will go on IOE (Initial operating experience) while a new CA will go on the same thing but its called UOE or Upgrade operating experience.....for obvious reasons. Both these are done on revenue flights.....not a big deal.Regarding the whole Colgan thing. Anyone who is anyone in the states has seen that video.....I smell lies the second I heard that 500 hr stuff and I am fairly sure that he didn't have 500TT when he upgraded.two reasons....you gotta have an ATP to be a CA in the states....that takes a minimum of 1500hrs TT.He said he was at Colgan for nine months........lets say three months for Initial training and the avg 75 min guarantee.....id say he flew 450 hrs just as an FO. So that in and of itself blows his statement out of the water.and Daniel, I dont see anywhere in the quote you posted that the OP said they started in twins.........at least a Bonanza isn't a twin.Someone also mentioned that one has to build all the 1500 hours in a single engine "trainer" not true......who told you that? There are nice corporate jobs out there.....you just have to network with the right people and you can find yourself in a bigger Piston twin or in some rare cases....a nice CJ. However, its best to instruct for a lot of that time because that's when a pilot learns the most he has ever learned.

FAA: ATP-ME, 737 CA, enough time in the 757/767 to be dangerous 🤠

Oops!!! I was thinking of the Baron!!! My mistake!!!! Sorry............Good post Matthew!! +1 Kudos to you.I think you do about 50-100 hours in a single, just getting your basic and nav time. Then you go to twins, IFR (If you haven't started it in singles), commercial, ATPL....For $100000 you can get your ATPL here in Australia. I think QANTAS does a cadetship. Now all the airlines are looking to pay lower, so that is why Jetstar and new airlines are getting the push to grow.

Sorry Billy.....I was too blunt I think!!!Please accept my apologies.

Can't be.You guys won't believe how many hours some ATPL pilots that are doing line work have!!!Here you go, some SOLID information for you, direct from Jetstar.http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/about-us/careers/pilot-faqs

We all make mistakes right? If you didn't I would love to meet you and have a few beers because you would be one of a kind!!!! :) hahahaIt seems like the same logic is around the world when it come to training progression....The sad thing about it in the states though is that some folks will pay around $100,000 to get up to their multi comm certificate....sad but true...at least Qantas gets you on a big airline with legacy status.

I would find it pretty damn amusing if a Part 121 pilot came on natl. television with out any blurred faces and out right say they upgraded with only 500TT.....Colgan would be gone and he wouldn't be a pilot anymore.......
