February 28, 201214 yr I was just curious what PMDG's take is on FlightGear. Is it possible for addon developers to profit from their product or does everything have to remain open source? I have never tried it. Anyone here have any flight time with it? Version 2.6 was released recently. Thinking about downloading it. Why not, its free!http://www.flightgear.org/ Edited February 28, 201214 yr by vdubbin Chuck Biggins
February 28, 201214 yr Flightgear is open source under GPL. That means that the source code of the base software has to be freely available, however add-ons to it do not.
February 28, 201214 yr Author From a layman point of view it seems this would be the perfect platform for PMDG to develop on if they can bring there loyal following with them like they will do with X Plane. Its open source so there are no limititations to what can be done. It's free so all anyone would have to buy is PMDGs creation. Seems like the anithesis of M$ Flight. Anyone dissappointed with M$ can look at this as an alternative. What am I missing here? Edited February 28, 201214 yr by vdubbin Chuck Biggins

That code changes can and do occur whenever the devs feel like it? That the "market" is almost non-existant?DJ
February 28, 201214 yr Author Some of their screenshots on their Facebook page look way better than FSX. Depends on which one you look at. Scenery is hit or miss, but its open source so if it gains popularity then it would improve just like it did from FS98 to FSX. Check it out. https://www.facebook.com/FlightGearIts not mandatory to upgrade to a new source code. I'd think devs would be way more compliant and helpful than M$ ever was to advanced addon developers like PMDG.Compare X Plane market share to FSX. Not stopping addon developers from moving to it.FlightGear is free so why wouldn't you install it if PMDG released a masterpiece like the NGX on it. From a payware development standpoint it's a total redevelopment effort for no guaranteed market and the devs won't touch it - they would like to make a few bucks. If you really feel like jumping to a new simulator that is free, why not jump to Flight and hope that the devs will follow since in all likelihood they could leverage at least some of their existing code?PMDG has never said that they are going to develop for X-Plane - they have said they will investigate X-Plane and consider the possibility.DJ Edited February 28, 201214 yr by ubersu
February 29, 201214 yr Author I'm not sure how much you frequent this forum but Robert did confirm PMDG is developing for X Plane and a possibly a number of other platforms in the future. The only reason I mentioned X Plane was because they did announce it. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/361758-04feb12-update-on-sp1c-and-a-few-other-items/I think open source is great and I support it every chance I can. I am simply hoping FlightGear can possibly be one of their other platforms to consider and what their thoughts are on it from their point of view. I'm not looking for a free platform. I'd be willing to pay quite a bit for an updated and complete version of FSX that fully supports addon devs without going through a marketplace. Its safe to say most people in this forum know M$ Flight is not free. Just the Hawaiian starter pack. They are going to nickel and dime us to death with $14.99 Maules. Edit: I really hope this is not true!!http://www.trueachievements.com/n7690/dlc-roundup-february-28th-2012.htm Edited February 29, 201214 yr by vdubbin Chuck Biggins

March 1, 201214 yr $7.99 for an external model only mustang!!!!!!!!! :oWTF is this scam!Well CaptainSim charges $9.99 for a external model only 777. :( i7-6700K @ 4.5 GHz, 16 GB DDR4-2400 MHz, GTX 1070 8GB
March 3, 201214 yr But the 777 is supposed to get a cockpit. And I bet the CS 777 flies more than the real thing than the MS Mustang does.
March 7, 201214 yr only time will tell if the MS Flight model works (no pun intended). :) Jude BradleyBeech Baron: Uh, Tower, verify you want me to taxi in front of the 747?ATC: Yeah, it's OK.
