New Laptop For FSX - Are This Specs Enough

Featured Replies

HiI am planning to buy a Laptop to replace my 4 year old DELL XPS system, and to be used primarily for FSX, other games and as a desktop replacement.I've read a lot and I know (or think) it's better and cheaper to go for a custom built desktop, but provided I am travelling a lot and planning to move more than once a year in the following years, I have been thinking about a laptop as a solution. So, let's say budget is around 2.000 US$ +/- 15%, and I want to run FSX as smoothly as possible with several high end addons and crowded skies (AI). I went to XoticPc and tried and tested a custom built using ASUS G74SX as a base. It's priced at 2322 US$ and these are the specs: Do you think this will do the job??Thanks - 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen (1920x1080) (SKU - X1R502) - ASUS Zero Bright Dot (ZBD) 30 Day Pixel Guarantee - (Included on ASUS Standard NON-Upgraded Displays) - 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2860QM, 2.5-3.6GHz, (32nm, 8MB L3 cache) (SKU - X2R209) - Stock OEM Thermal Compound ( IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU Provided FREE with Processor Upgrade!) - nVidia GeForce GTX 560M 3,072MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11 (SKU - X3R602) - 12GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Dual Channel Memory (3x4GB SODIMMS) (SKU - X4N233)

Should be decent. They must be you'll get 3.6GHz on Turbo... and you'll want that on all the time for FSX usage.

Seriously speaking, is it possible to run FSX (even without add-ons) on a laptop? I keep banging my head on the wall...is it possible? If most of us have spent several thousands of dollars to get FSX run at least at an "acceptable" manner with you-name-it so many hardware and software (with some cases including up to 8 large fans to dissipate heat), why do people insist in trying to use a laptop?

I've run it on my laptop for years... not with all the high settings, or add-ons, but plain vanilla it does just fine...

That would be good. I get above fps on toshiba laptop an i5 / 4GB / 1 GB dedicated Nvidia 525m , just do the tweaks once you get your lappy.

Ryzen 5 1600x - 16GB DDR4 - RTX 3050 8GB - MSI Gaming Plus

gotta also remember, the resolution will be down so that helps a fair bit with FPS.

Yep, it´s possible, look at my sig.The CPU is an overclocked i7 920XM - I use Trottlestop to get around 3.6 Ghz. - cooling is important though, and Coolermaster NotePal U3 does the job, with an extra 120 mm 2000 RPM fan mounted, and connected to a 12V [email protected]:Good luck with the ASUS G74SX , it will run FSX, and even better than a G73JH, because you´ll have a GeForce card.

Hi, thanks for the repliesDoes anyone knows of another high performance laptop builder I can check? As the most important thing for me is to run FSX as fast as possible and many of the gaming laptops out there are designed for other "more commercial" game titles... and it is my understanding that FSX, besides a good graphic card and good memory, needs processor speed rather than multiple cores.. is that correct? The thing is, when I bought my XPS 720 desktop 4 years ago, just after 3 months I moved to another country for a year and a half on a work assignment, and I couldn't take my computer with me... So I pretty much lost it's first 2 years, which in computer time is a lot! I live in Venezuela, and plans are to be moving to Europe this year to study for a year, and afterwards who knows where destiny is going to take me. Another issue, here in Venezuela we have 110V as in the US, and you get 220V in Europe... so I need something that works on both...Laptops generally do, don't they?.Rgds

Mine runs FSX amazing. Graphics are basically maxed, with all the extras in my signature. I average 25-30 FPS. I fly the NGX and the QW757 with no issue.

Yep, usually the adapter is capable. You only need the power cord for the mickey mouse connector, and you can buy that one usually in every country.

Eric I just tried building one similar to yours in HP and I get a good price. My only concern however are the 1333 MHZ RAM Memory, and the Radeon graphic card, because I've heard that for FSX Nvidia works better... But i don't know if there is such a difference between faster ram and nvidia GPU...
