Quesion on fuel level - ability to adjust?

Featured Replies

Hey gang,So earlier today I selected a job, at a specific airport on the big island. It was carrying a few hundred pounds of cargo of some sort. I guessed at my fuel load for the Maule, around 65% or so. Total wild butt guess on my part. I think the distance of this job was around 160nm or so.Ok so I click the start mission button, and there I am in the cockpit ready to go. Now the feller that was in there, well he commented just crunching the numbers regarding weight, I was too heavy to take off from that runway - need to dump some fuel.Ok - hmm, so how do I dump the fuel? Only way I could tell was to escape out of the mission, go to my fuel setting for the Maule, and decrease it. Which I did. But now, this job no longers shows up at the airport - it is gone? How was I supposed to lighten the load by dumping fuel for this job, am I missing something here? I did not see an interactive way to do it from within the cockpit? Did this guy just tell me that to get rid of me?? lol.

Press F and you can reduce the fuel by the slider. You always need a fair amount in reserve as when skipping waypoints you may have prop rpm and mixture fully in over a long stretch which leads to high fuel flow.

Well dang , don't I feel just stupid at the moment. I guess I should take a few minutes and study up on those key commands, might enlighten me a litte...Many thanks Peter, for something I should have figured out on my own!

Don. You spotted a bug. on small airstrips you cant dump fuel "F".It is only working on med and big airports.Try it on Port Allen PHPA.

Well can't say I spotted a bug there Ramon, wish I could say that but I never pressed F.. that may have been the end result but I do not know.

Sometimes you have to move the plane a bit before the F key works. Happens to me a lot. Just taxi a few feet and hit the F key and you should be good to go.Hook

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Hook I read your post and did further testing, yes the Fuel icon appears after you move the plane, But I think you should be able to "dump fuel" while parked on the tarmac.

Anyway, the BUG is at least partially true and you pointed me to it. So you get the credit.

Tried it at Port Allen, Ramon, and could not dump fuel there. Safest thing to do then is to manage fuel in the "select aircraft" section immediately before starting the job.Just seen the above post and will try again.Moved the aircraft about 20 yards and the Fuel dump worked.

Well in all fairness I didn’t noticed that BUG before because the copilot only starts whining after you start rolling on the tarmac.Anyway I don’t think that is the way it works on real life, loading or unloading fuel is while parked and engine off, or am I wrong?

I have found that you can dump fuel at any airport using F, but you can only add at airports with fuel.I guess you could add fuel while the engine is running, but you'd have to be very brave to do it standing next to that giant salad chopper.

Why thank you sir, in that case I will take at least partial credit!

I've been running into a problem related to this a lot! I start the cargo mission, and the guy says I need a bigger aircraft. The cargo weighs so much that the Maule can only carry a few gallons of fuel before its over the limit. What do you do? Fly for a while, and stop to refuel?

You can do as you said, but some other missions are just RW impossible to do.Like ferry1800 lb. (708 kg) of Books from Princeville to Lanai Airport, when Maule specs say Max Payload is 955 lb. (376 kg)That was discussed during the beta, I hope the fix that.

I just ignore that guy and take off anyway...

I think this is a RW lesson that is valuable to all pilots, virtual or otherwise. You have to be prepared to check the weight and balance before you fly. It's great that they do something to expose the issue.Or maybe it is a bug
