How to: land fixed wing backwards?

Featured Replies

friends, any idea how to get that achievement with the existing aircraft? thought it could only be done with the icon? any other recommendation? also, 29kts headwind is the most I could get so far, are you aware of any settings/areas with higher wind. those 29 do not drive the icon backwards so far. or am I doing something wrong?

I got it in the Maule, with its high lift I managed to fly and land backwards in one of Kaloyanics mp sessions. No idea what his weather settings were, I'd love to know- it was insane, 60kt crosswinds I think.

60kt crosswinds
60?! wow, tried all available weather settings and only reached 29 so far. see, MS, that's why some of us would like to have fully customizable weather :Peace:

Try the really stormy settings. Note that the highest winds may be localized someplace other than where you are, so skip around on the map checking the winds to find an airport in a windy spot that also happens to have a runway pointed in the right direction.EDIT: Or, anywhere over water with the Icon, I guess.

Phil,There is a Maule landing challenge, I want to say it is #6.I have not been able to complete it yet, but have only made 1 attempt. It is high up a mountain around observatory I think - and has 60kt winds...If there is any place to earn that award I would think that would be it if one can handle it.

really stormy settings
somehow reminds me to the space balls movie: ridiculous stormy, really stormy, insanely stormy ok, will look around for a nice windy place.

It certainly was for me, as I made one attempt and gave up for now.My dang Maule was flyin sideways till it hit the mountain!

Yup, challenge #6 for Maule will do it for you. 60kt wind. I suggest going left immediately when the mission starts and fly into the wind for some time. It will give you a good idea of what to do and in what amount. It is tricky ofc but after some practice, i am sure you will be able to do it. I think i have a video of my successful backward landing on that challenge but the stupid LIVE didn't give me the achievement. And not just that, i finished at least another 4 achievements that never showed up (some stupid ones such as land safely with cargo at a certain airport, land at all airports). I guess it is just bugged, so i suggest you also record it with Fraps. Good luck!Cheers

I know, I know. I read your story.
but the stupid LIVE didn't give me the achievement.
just did the 1hr inverted flight for 30XP. first it did not show up. I needed to log off and back on again to get those. but I would expect you did that already in the meantime after all these missed achievements?

I was (mistakenly) awarded the backward landing 50XP during a failed attempt at Maule landing challenge # 6. One second before I was blown backwards off the landing pad and over the adjacent cliff, the good people at Microsoft saw fit to give me credit (and achievement) for a backwards landing. I did not, however, get credit for a successful landing on that attempt. I also racked up one and a half minutes of backward flight time on approach in that landing challenge just loitering on the 60 kt breeze with full flaps hanging out. I attempted to achieve a legitimate backwards landing by flying to a lowland airstrip during the same challenge # 6 and settling the Maule down on the runway centerline with negative ground speed. The high wind speed follows the aircraft down off the mountain. Altho I (visually) achieved a backward landing, my challenge was ended as soon as I touched down as I had "missed the runway" (which was on top of Mauna Loa) and no backward landing was credited. I have since settled the Maule down on the Mauna Loa parking pad with negative ground speed and applied brakes in time to stop the plane from backing over the edge but, since I was already (illegitimately) awarded the achievement of backward landing in the game, no further mention was made of this attempt as I hadn't bettered my previous best landing score.

Hi, ladies and gentlemen. I'm Bob Dunn from KSEA. I'm a long time lurker but first time poster, finally with something to say. I get no end of pleasure from reading here. I've been flying simulators since Microprose owned the franchise and I flew on a 80286 PC. I'll introduce myself properly in the appropriate forum.

welcome bob! great to see you posting and contributing, was obviously a long silence period netween 09/10 and now. glad you made it! and congrats to the backwards landing, I did not succeed yet but would not complain if MS gave me credit to anything which looks remotely as a backwards landing :Peace: . will need to give it another try soon! thanks for posting!

Thank you very much, @DAD. I'll post more often now but I prefer to have something relevant to contribute and, to date, I got nuttin'. I just received a Flight software update to version 1.0.1.30023 but all I can find that it adds is the main menu now has an additional catagory to redeem prepaid gamer cards. I was so hoping for toe brakes or virtual cockpits or additional nav aids or something. I share not only the joys of the performance and detail of scenery but the frustrations with Flight's limitations (compared to FSX and X-Plane) and the dev team's remarkable silence as to their plans for Flight's future. I'll describe my large desktop computer, my jury rigged flight controls (based on Logiteck G940) and my relevant personal information to all you wonderful people over in the student's forum. I'd love to edit in my gamertag "Robert Dunn 2" into my member description as you have. How do you edit in that information where I currently have "newbie"?

How do you edit in that information where I currently have "newbie

um, obviously this is more difficult as I thought as I just managed to change my profile from DAD to my email adress. hope the mods will change this soon :Just Kidding: .

anyway, tried to get to the part where you can change the newbie into something else but did not succeed... will try to look again once the mods fixed my name back to DAD...

Mr. Leaven, I am SO VERY SORRY to have caused you to mis-edit your member name in this prompt and kind attempt to answer my kinda unimportant question. While my member description of "Newbie" is, indeed, accurate with respect to my posting proliferation, it's not very informative and your idea of using the text string to identify yourself by your gamertag looked like such a logical idea. I intend to show up in multiplayer as soon as I am satisfied with my ability to fly in public. Identifying myself here in Avsim with this gamertag relevant to Games for Windows Live as you have seemed like a wonderful idea. I've looked for the edit field for Avsim member description and couldn't find that option. As you had already done this edit, I thought I'd ask you how you did it and now I've caused you this problem. I apologize profusly and thank you sincerely for making such an effort. I am truly finding good people in this forum as well as invaluable tips and aids. I run three large screens and my second screen runs Google Earth with the Flight airports marked and identified and the third screen has FSWidgets GMap up. These most useful aids came from the good members here at Avsim. Many of us quiet ones here in the flight sim community so appreciate the service you all provide for us here at Avsim.
