Flags at the top of every forum page wastes space

Featured Replies

I like the Avsim strapline "Where Flight Simulation Enthusiasts Gather from around the World", but why take up valuable page real estate with the flags image? We don't all have large hi-res monitors. And why those flags in particular? "from around the Pacific" would be more appropriate for the ones chosen. No European flag, no African flag, no South American flag. Better just have the strapline without the image.

I disagree with you and it is a work in progress...

I think the OP is maybe being a little hasty in his conclusion, but I do agree that I hope AVSIM will represent their members countries equally here; for example nice to see some diversity in the first 'outing' of the flags; but notice that alongside the nations shown that don't often get recognition, there's still room for the US flag on the first outing! ... I'm not making a big deal of this; I'm just saying that it didn't surprise me. :)

If the flags are varied regularly, and equally, I think this is a nice touch.

David.

I didn't even notice them until I saw this post.

Same with the spinning images and I was on almost all day yesterday.

African flag? What do you mean? Africa is a continent. Same for South America.

EDIT:

For those of you who don't know...

The flags (in order from left to right): Malaysia, Australia, South Korea, Fiji, United States.

Well, the german flag is an european flag, the senegalese flag is an african flag and the brazilian flag is a south american flag.

What do you disagree about, all of what I said or just some of it? Maybe if you explained what the "work in progress" was I'd see the point.

A wider, narrower image with more flags would be better and not go as far below the line created by bottom of the flanking adverts, so no wasted space. If the five flags chosen have a specific meaning for AVSIM then please explain what it is. I don't think it represents the worldwide simming community though.

Is it the introduction of this kind of thing that has SLOWED Avsim pages so much for me? Lately, when logging in, I have to wait for what 'feels' like ages (probably just 3-4 seconds) before I can do anything, including just scrowling down.

Happens when changing pages too. I get the same with either EI or FF

Windows 10 (x64) - X-Plane 11 - M/B: Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero - CPU: i7 7700k (@5.0GHz) - RAM: 32Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 @ 3200MHz - Video: GTX1080ti - Cooling: Custom water loop (EK 140 Revo D5 pump/res combo, EK EVO CPU block, EK XE360 Rad)

We had significant issues in the top part of the forums with really bloated PHP calls. We fixed that this morning and you should be seeing a much speedier load time.

I disagreed with this:

Better just have the strapline without the image.

And it is not a fixed design, and will be more friendly. It is a place holder.. We bring the new front page online tonight (there's a hint there)..

Thanks for explaining, Tom. But the flags chosen don't match the strapline (worldwide). And the depth of the image means page space is wasted. In my browser, the news doesn't start till half way down the page.

BTW I thought the plans to revamp the front page had long since been abandoned. I'm delighted to see a more interesting and user friendly home page has been created. Congratulations on the re-launched site.

While I like the new design, I'm getting a "double" banner when I open the site (Avsim and search box). One banner disappears when I scroll down. I'm viewing this in Firefox with Windows 7 as my OS. Anyone else seeing this?
