How do you do this? Can someone be kind enough to teach this biff. I've tried looking through FCOM and the training manual but to no avail.

Thanks Craig.

Little dual core system not worth mentioning!

Yeah bit confused aswell.

Are you talking about heading hold and heading tracking fuctionality of the AP?

Ash Hitchcock

I believe you're talking about if ATC says something like, "Depart FIXXY heading 360."

You could make a fix based off of FIXXY in the legs page and use LNAV. Just come up with a leg FIXXY360/50 and put it after FIXXY. This method will start you pointed in the general direction, but it will correct for wind (it will track 360), and ATC won't want that, they want just heading 360. You should follow up by just going in to HDG SEL and 360.

Or you could simply "preselect" 360 in the MCP heading, and then when you get to FIXXY, simply hit HDG SEL.

If I receive instructions for an action at a fix, (report, turn, etc), I'll put the fix in th FIX page to "highlight" it as a reminder.

If the SID/STAR is coded for a heading, you could just leave it in LNAV.

Thanks for including that part. That's something a lot of people miss.

Yeah thanks for that, it's usually the method I do. I just hit HDG SEL when I'm over a fix, just wondered it there was a way of doing it on the FMC. Interesting about your point about the fix page, I'll need to have another read up on that.

Cheers again

I beleive heading means heading when assigned by ATC. Setting a new fix and using LNAV creates a track. In a no wind situation, they will be the same.

If I'm in the Terminal environment, especially as a solo pilot in a 2 crew aircraft, the last thing I'm going to want to do is to be heads down trying to program the FMC. Heading select seems a much simpler way to handle it.

Yes- remember Bill Bulfer's thought that the FMC = strategic whilst the MCP = tactical. Sound advice, especially in a busy environment..........
