Well, more than a month after... I am changing....

As a mater of fact, the more (even if a lot less than I would love to...) play FLIGHT the more I like it, up to the point of allowing cockpitless airplanes as well into my Hangar :-)

How I have changed from the good old days of FS9, FSX, ...quite in the good way I believe, because at least now, everytime I fire it up FLIGHT behaves like what it is supposed to be - a Flight Simulator as opposed to a benchmark software to measure and tweak your hardware... I really enjoy "flying" the challenges (no mission flown yet, but the initial... :-( ) the Aerocache hunting, and the ambience as a whole!

FLIGHT is changing me, I the more I change the more I think that this is probably one of it's main features, and a very good one - trying to change our flightsimmers life, freeing us from the mess and stress of fighting against our machines and thousands of add-ons and money spent on it, instead of simulating flight and having realy good times :-)

Well, I have to say I am also very happy with how MS Flight simply WORKS!

I haven't flown FSX anymore since Flight was released, apart for doing a comparison flight twice. Flight totally changed how I fly virtually. With FSX I was indeed quite often more busy with getting things to work well, although the last half year, since I had FSX running quite well on my new PC, I did actually mainly fly. But I never was realy satisfied. I sometimes visit the other subforums here and whenever I read about how to get FSX or even P3D running well, I get a uncomfortable feeling... and I am SO GLAD it's all behind me! I can't stand the word 'bufferpools' anymore... or the name of any other cfg entry... Flight can simply be started and enjoyed!

In the short time I have been flying in Flight I have learned ALL about VOR and approach plates and I have bought rudder pedals. I am much more into flying then ever before! Even though the area is very limited (imho) I am having a great time, also thanks to the various (awesome) weather themes which make Hawaii look different everytime. Luckily Alaska is coming though, specially because I am not too fond of flying over the water that much.

I am perfectly happy with the Maule and RV6 (I am used to flying one plane for months): I'm sure the plane that comes with Alaska will be a nice addition, but even without an extra plane I will buy Alaska, no matter what.

However... I will NOT buy a plane without a VC. Never.

One of these days I was taking of from an airport in FLIGHT (don't remember which...) under strong crosswind.

FLIGHT behaves so realistically, as oposed to previous MSFS sims, or xplane9/10 in that they have fixed the drag coeficients for side forces applied to your wheels, that taking off in FLIGHT is now As Real as it can be on a PC-based simulator. This is simply GREAT!

And yes, ALSKA will certainly bring great new features too :-)

How I have changed from the good old days of FS9, FSX, ...

Well I must admit as much as I love my FSX, I have not loaded up a single flight in it yet since installing MS Flight on March 5th.

Undoubtedly I will and will continue to enjoy FSX, but for the last few weeks most of my attention has gone to exploring and enjoying Flight.

However I doubt I could ever bring myself to add a cockpitless airplane to my stable.

In the end it is all about one thing, what does one have fun with.

Don B

I agree with the above statements and, in my case, 0€ investment in a new PC. A dual core with a 7600 from FS9 days beta gives me the necessary conditions.

I can understand your feeling and that's the only reason, IMO, Flight had some room into recent weeks. All is about the FPS and to be honest FSX is quite frustrating from this point of view, also with new CPUs and GPUs.

I do really love FSX, I really do. I poured money into it as well. But even with all the planes I have (pay and free) and all the scenery enhancements (pay and free). Something just doesn't feel "as real as it gets" with me. MS Flight for some reason comes far closer to that "as real as it gets" feeling for me even though it has just a few planes and just a few places. Honestly. I've never been one to strap into an airliner and go through all the checks and take off, then climb and hit the autopilot and let it just sit and fly and eat and drink while doing so. I have and always have loved down low, hugging the ground, bush type flying. It's what I trained for when I was getting my real private pilot's license. And though I haven't been able to pursue that flying goal in real life due to costs, I've always loved dead reckoning and pure VFR flight with a touch of IFR. Flight, to me does that for me. It really does. It feels more real. I'm not saying that it does that for everyone, but for me, since that is how I flew way back when, that is the exact sensations I get while flying MS Flight. I really just didn't get that "click" with FS9 or FSX. I just can't put my finger on it.

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings..." High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Interestingly the much improved flight dynamics in FLIGHT (compared to FSX and apparently P3D) made me use FLIGHT a lot...initially.

I bought the RV and the Maule but nevertheless it became very boring very quick.

So examined x-plane 10 again in more detail and I'm surprised how good it is. The 'feel' is even better than with FLIGHT.

Much to my own surprise I deleted FLIGHT a few days ago and bought x-plane 10 instead. Don't regret it at all.

IF MS is going to allow third party designers and releases an SDK, I will for sure consider FLIGHT again, but until then, with useless add-ons like the Mustang and the Zero it's not really an option for me, even if you are only interested in VFR flying like I am.

I'm enjoying many things about flight. The ease of use is fantastic. I enjoy sitting down and launching into a quest within minutes. And kudos to MS for finally answering the "how to play FS on max seetings" question by neutering and rebuilding the software so that eternal quest is finally put to rest. I feel like this finally could have been the FS we have all wanted.

However, I want to build my own adventures, fly from the places I want to fly, with the planes I want to fly, and to the places I want to fly. Now when I want Flight's fast food fix, I feel like I'm choosing someone elses adventures: "out of these three options, what do I want to do today?". Also, I have no attachment to my experience points, levels, or my cache count so I don't even feel like I'm building a character ala rpg style. I can already feel the boredom setting in, and it's only Flight's ease of use over FSX that has kept me coming back. I haven't spent a dime on Flight yet, and if Alaska costs more than $20 and doesn't have any free to play area, that will likely remove me from Flight even further.

It's a bitter sweet return to FSX... I get to choose the exact adventure I want, a vast library of addons (much of it free), but I also get the (self imposed) file management migraine, the constant adjustments to settings to minimize stutter, etc. In the midst of the FSX frustrations, I fantasize about Flight being what could have been FSNext, and my dissapointment swells for both of the titles. This whole thing about Flight being "more attainable for the casual fliers" is simply a smoke screen to hide the more greedy aspects of Flight's true intentions. There is no reason, relating to the gameplay, why Flight had to be trimmed down to 4% of the FS universe we are familiar with. (how about giving us the world, but selling us HiDef areas like HI and AK? How about an open addon market, but still controlled and owned by MS? There are other options out there which would have satisfied MS's finances as well as the "simmer" crowd, but MS chose this path out of the wrong reasons)

I still haven't been enthralled by Flights dynamics- turning off the "head motion"? helped, and the recent patch making the controls less jerky also helped. I no longer feel like I'm on rails like in FSX, but sometimes I do get a sensation that I can only equate to what it would feel like to fly boat, so maybe that is spot on with the icon? Other times, I'm surprised at how "sticky" the plane feels in the air, I'll be watching the plane externally and it just seems to sit there, not drifting in any axis. It gives me the sensation of being inside of a bubble, or playing an arcade "flying" game like Afterburner.

I've been really impressed with xplane too. Taxiing the v-22 osprey a couple of feet above the tarmac, I actually get a sensation of balancing a huge machine on top of a cushion of air. The sensation is absolutely tactile to me. Unfortunately, the xplane GUI would probably rank last place among any other software title available today, and it will likely never have any of the get up an go options that Flight, or even FSX, has.

It's funny - I'm almost the opposite right now. I had been spending a lot more time with Flight over the last month or so and was convinced I'd buy Alaska the day it comes out and never pay for an FSX addon ever again.

Well, I got tired of only having Hawaii to fly around, and then ORBX had their huge sale. I just bought ORBX PNW for $22 and am amazed at how good it looks and how well it runs on my laptop. Now I find myself wondering if Alaska will look this good...

I'm not saying I won't buy Alaska on day 1 (not saying I will either), but after being all about Flight for a while, I've found myself drifting back toward FSX... Maybe Alaska will fix that!

I bought the RV and the Maule but nevertheless it became very boring very quick.

Exactly, ...and it does not depend on missions, aerocaches etc.. as many may be led to assume.

It simply depends on the missing of thickness a non simulation game ineluctably brings. You feel empty while playing because it takes no skill to move a plane here and there in a courtyard area.

Alaska will bring a tiny breath of oxygen to this sensation but it will last very short.

We are here to help Flight to became a real game but MS is inclined to follow only the casual gamers therefore sooner or later they will raise the white flag in this time limited crusade they are conducting against us.

It also depends on what you make of it, I think. I mean, I fly in MS Flight everyday and even though I am really looking forward to Alaska, I still am having big fun flying in MS Flight and I don't realy do jobs and missions and aerocaches, only on (rare) occasion. I am mainly flying using VOR only and doing real life approaches. Combined with the various weather themes and different times of day the game feels different everytime I fly, even though I know a lot of airports by heart now. If you only do jobs and fly straight to the (annoyingly yellow) destination, Flight will bore you quickly indeed. But if you approach it like a sim, you can keep yourself busy for quite some time. You can make the game as boring as you like, just as you can with FSX. And I don't agree that no skills are needed... Yes, if you only fly that 'car' (what's it called again) in jobs.... yawn... but if you fly the Maule or RV in heavy weather, using VOR only and charts, you do need skill imho. If you fly without the need for skill, you can't blame that on Flight because you can also fly 'skill-less' in FSX.

But again, I am looking forward to Alaska. Seeing how much fun Hawaii alone is already giving me, Alaska certainly won't be a short breath of oxygen for me!

The thing I love about Flight is that I don't have to spend ages on planning a flight. And by that I mean deciding where to fly from and to, and which plane and livery to fly it.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Alaska will offer.

Unfortunately I do not have a machine to run xplane properly, and the tests I did with xp10 were not very conclusive, but, just like L. Adamson points out, why not have them all provided you have the chance to enjoy them all :-)

I'm rather monogamic though, so, I am really becoming fully dedicated to FLIGHT, even in detriment of CONDOR ....
