Is my networked computer to weak for ASE

Featured Replies

Hello Paul

Seems to be around what I get depending on the servers ect.

Thanks again for the confirmation!! (it does seem an eternity when you are sitting there staring at it waiting to refresh your AI LOL)

Have a great day,

Thanks again,

-P

ASE starts slowly even on fast machines - it's a feature. Your processor is fast enough and you have enough memory for the program. Ugrading your graphics card to 512 Mb would probably help your map updating - I assume there are still 512Mb AGP cards out there somewhere.

There are many AGP cards on ebay(tradera). But after thinking about this I'm a little doubtful. The map window is rather small and this is no 3D game. Will a new videocard be helpful?

Is ASE map feature more GPU than CPU intensive? I have also noticed by using HD tune that my harddrive is very slow compared to the drives in my main computer. what about putting in a SSD drive instead of a new videocard? Although the motherboard only supports SATA I. How much will I lose in performence because of that?

I just tested ASE and FSX.

I have ASE on a workstation PC.

I loaded FSX and the Duke at KDTW and turned on ATIS.

Then started ASE (FSUIPC WIDE) on the workstation.

It took 2 minutes to get new ATIS and Wx.

What about the map window? How fast does it update if you zoom it? For me it can be something like up to 10 seconds

No guarantees for any hardware change - it is too dependent on the total system for me to even guess. On the other hand, I wouldn't even consider running FS and add-ons with less than a 512Mb graphics card and it sure wouldn't hurt to upgrade yours. Obviously, fast hard drives work better for FS than slow drives...

The ASE map window on my machine updates almost instantly. I run Win7 x64 at 3.2Ghz, 8Mb ram, 7200 rpm drives, 1Gb nVidia GTX260 graphics... so it isn't a good comparison.

Yeah, even on my C2D with a GTX285 the map updates are almost instant. At most 1-2 seconds if I make a big change like zoom out or in 1000's of feet a time for example. As established earlier, 2-4 minutes for initial load, download and wxr set, and then 2-4 minutes to load a flightplan have it complete and then refresh AI. Once loaded most things including the map refresh should be almost instant...

Just wan't to remind that this networked computer does not run FS but ASE and its spec are

AMD 64 4000

2 Gb RAM

ATI 9800PRO 128 Mb DDR

250 Gb WD IDE harddrive

Win XP Home

My main computer which runs FS9 FSX RC Fs Flying school

AMD Phenom II X4 3.4 GHz

4 Gb RAM

NVIDIA GTS 250 1 Gb

128 Gb SSD dedicated for FSX

120 GB SSD for OS Win 7 x64

500 Gb with FS9 and other stuff

I haven't forgotten - the system I quoted is where I run ASE; consequently it's hard for me to judge. I do not think that your graphics card is adequate - 128Mb cards have been obsolete for years. As noted, I cannot judge whether or not the other hardware you proposed will help your current issue.

Hello

I run AS2012 networked on a old Thinkpad alongside FScommander and a few other apps running at the same time

The Thinkpad is running a Pentium 4M @ 1.8ghz and it has a 128mb ATI 9600 graphics chip.

This setup runs AS2012 smoothly,

The OP's machine has an ATI 9600 128mb, he will have no issues whatsoever with ASE on that hardware.

AS2012 is highly optimized compared to ASE - the OP already has issues; that's why he posted.

DJ

Hello

I am only trying to tell the OP that I have zero problems with similar hardware.

You on the other hand have already stated that " consequently it's hard for me to judge".

Anyway I am out of this thread, pointless trying to help anyone on these forums these days, what would I know as a beta tester anyway?
