One of the first things we learned as children...

my thought of the day...

So I really have to wonder and question the behavior on not only this forum at times but also the same behavior on other forums I frequent and how the Internet has negatively affected our interaction as humans...

Just my observation and a lot of this goes for myself also and I will make a conscious effort to change the negative aspects of my own behaviour.

Please feel free to add the things that bother you about the way the internet has changed our interaction with others...

Do you remember when you didn't say something negative for the sake of it?

Do you remember when you gave the person you were speaking to the same level or respect you expected in return?

Do you remember when you thought before you spoke because there was no delete key?

Do you remember when you let others live and let live and believed in to each their own opposed to forcing your beliefs down their throat

Do you remember when you weren't anonymous but had to actually accept responsibility for your words and actions?

Do you remember the last time you admitted you were wrong and apologized for it?

Do you remember when being a tough guy required you to actually be a tough guy and a keyboard and mouse didn't make everyone a tough guy

Do you remember when things like this weren't things we had to think about but were a normal part of our daily lives?

For as good as the Internet is and as much as I love it I think it has had a disastrous effect on how we actually communicate as humans and the level of respect we show one another...

Just my .02 of the day after reading some comments on here and a few other forums this am...

Do unto others as you would want done to you and speak to others as you would want to be spoken to... it is not a bad way to live your life...

And in true internet form I have my flame suit on and I am ready to take it... I have always believed in not holding myself to a higher standard but yes, holding myself to a standard which most people don't and not for anyone else but because no one is harder on myself than me and I am the one who has to like what I see in the mirror in the morning (which I do if there is a cute blonde behind me looking over my shoulder.) There is nothing worse than being disappointed in yourself and your own actions imho...

Paul,

One of the best posts I have seen here in ages! Seems the level of respect for others has, at times all but disappeared. I often wonder how some of these discussions would play out if everyone were sitting around a table facing one another. Quite different I think. Great thoughts!

Joe Esposito

Thank you Joe! Couldn't agree more, this would be a much different place if our conversations were held face-face. The level of respect around here has bbeen sadly lacking (and not just around here, on other forums I frequent as well...

Sad state...

Thanks again Joe,

-Paul

Thanks Chuck, there are a lot of REALLY good people on here yourself included. We can all do with a reminder of that sometimes :)

Bones are garbage, back is still shot, the fusion is good but the level above is not, the hip replacement didn't take, I am having all sorts of femur issues and waiting to have the other hip replaced so it is not easy. Everyday hurts but I am doing trackdays on the motorcycle until the other hip goes for good to keep a smile on my face when I am not simming. I go to NJMP, don't think that is too far from you...

Well I haven't been around here all that long, but this board strikes me as pretty civilised compared with some of the others out there on the web, particularly in the gaming world. I've seen things get a bit heated here sometimes, but that's all, and that seems acceptable if the topic is a contentious one.

It's down to good moderation really; a crocodile-pit of an online forum will ultimately only keep the sort of people who like a good row, and chase away those that don't. it's up to the moderators to restrain any deliberate malice if it should appear.

Added a +1 to the count. Wish this could be stickied in a few forums and be required reading in one particular forum...

Whatever a person's goal may be with their version of a flight simulation game, I hope they are able to achieve that without having unnecessary roadblocks placed in their way. It should always be about being entertained, because isn't that why most all of us sit down at the computer?

Paul, that was simply so well expressed that there is nothing much to add Except that, sadly, I see examples of the same lack of responsible and respectful social skills outside the internet environment. It seems to me that those negatives are considered a certain kind of strength and the positives you outlined are actually viewed as a weakness. Thank goodness that only describes a small percentage of society - so far! It also seems to me that the internet is breeding a certain personality type that exists with a false sense of authority, bravado or self worth where being comtemptable is considered a sport or a form of self entertainment. A sad way to boost their ego.

Thank you for the post - very good - very well done.

Regards,

Mel

Thank you so much for those thoughts. They are truly worth remembering and practicing. I sure do remember all those things. So many so-called "tough guys" have come out in this forum lately. Like you, I believe the keyboard and being anonymous makes these pseudo-tough guys say things that get a good forum put in a defensive mode and ruin the enjoyment of others who truly want to express their opinions.

"Tough guys" never talk tough. Talk to a Navy Seal or an Army Ranger. You'll understand.
