New machine - constructive critisim is needed

Featured Replies

Hi,

It seems like I'm finally ready to get a new rig for FSX. I will order the parts from Newegg, Microcenter will care about the assembling. No overclocking is planned in the nearest future, thus no watercooling will be purchsed. Also, due to low reliability of SSD (i read many reports about Intel SSD crash all the time) I'd rather stick with the best WD HD on the market.

Here is the list.

Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

Even though you will not be over-clocking now, do you plan on getting an aftermarket cooler?

Cooler for CPU or for the entire case? My current PC has 6 fans and one large (air-based) cooler near the MB and CPU. I'm planning to use this cooling combination with the new additions.

Constructive criticism:

Buy an aftermarket cooler. Once you get your awesome rig you're only going to want more power!

Many good choices out there... for instance, best value:

Coolermaster Hyper 212+

Best cooling Noctua DH14

Best cooling but smaller HS is Corsair H80/100

Thanks for the advice about DH14. Seems like a good air-cooler. Not sure that I'm ready for liquid-cooling staff like h80/100.

BTW - is DH14 enough for "humble" overclocking that not exceed 4.5Ghz.,

Hehe, the new corsair lineup isn't liquid cooler like your thinking... It's all self-contained, there's no ongoing maintenance like the professional ones...

You put it on and you're good to go. I use the H60 it's great, takes up little space.

Nochua is great and no worries about leaks, etc.

What are you doing about a power supply? I would suggest Corsair 750 Silver or Gold.

I think the Raptor drive does not do anything for you on flgihtsim an you can save some money with a Cavair Black 1 TB. Get two drives, one for the OS and the other for Flght Sim. This will keep files less fragmented and using O&O defrag by name you will have very fast access to files.

Agreed... WD drives are still pricey from their thailand plant flooding... my samsung spinpoint is just fine for other gaming programs. I do use an SSD with FSX.

I have Antec CPU ~1000W which I purchased 2 years ago with the latest upgrade. So, I'm pretty much confident in this part.

SSD is still out of my radar, since there is no reliability history for these drives. Once we hit the threshold of 3 years of using FSX in SSD enviroment - I will change my mind. But not now.

Cannot understand about the coolers. Noshua DH14 isn't liquid cooler according to Newegg. What types of leaks you're talking about?

Also, do you think that MB selected is good for potential OC in the future? Or should I purchased more pricey version of Z77 Mobo?

Thanks

Dmitriy

Power plant looks good.

What I was saying about the DH14 is that it is a great cooler with the SB chips and unlike water cooling options you never have to worry about a leak.

Thank you Mark. Just added DH14 into the basket.

I guess the Raptor is for FSX only and windows is residing on another disk?

Good decision about NHD14. Installed couple of those, and they are monsters!

Be sure your RAMs are low enough. NHD14 is very large, and RAMs, if not low enough, can obstruct the cooler. What I saw from the pic, they have the coolers on them, so that is a no-go if not removable. It might also depend on the board, how far the slots are from the socket. Make sure you check into that. Or into return policy :)

Any way to figure it our before the purchase? Honestly speaking, I'm not a tech guy at all - just learnin while reading you, guys. So don't shoot me :-)

I doubt those RAM will work with the DH14... they've got very tall heatspreaders.

Try something like this (and much cheaper):

I don't think so. The point is, I built couple of machines with NHD14 and most had problems if heatspreaders were attached. But all of RAMs were able to remove the heatspreader by just unscrewing it. So I guess you would be good to go if you run into problems. The sure way is, as Ryan said, without heatspreader. I know though that those are lower speeds. That is why I would rather like a bit faster ones, then just removing heatspreaders.
