Z68 or Z77 Mobo with i7-2700K?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Since the benefit of Z77 is more for IB, and now that I made my decision to go with an i7-2700K, what is a good Z68 based board? Z68 boards are less expensive, and since this upgrade will be good for the next three years (I do not intend to switch CPU ), is a Z77 board a good idea?

Thanks

Vu Pham

The ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Gen3 has been a good one for me with the i7-2600K.

I wouldn't go spend the extra money on a Z77 if the plan is to use a SB CPU.

An Asus P8Z68 Deluxe would be a better choice due to the maturity of the chipset.

I have the ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe Gen3 and couldn't be happier with it. I've heard of double boot problems but mine was plug and play and haven't had a hiccup.

The Asus P8Z68 costs $259

There are some Z77 boards that are less than $200 (Gigabyte). I think Z77 maybe a better option to go with the Sandy CPU. In case in the near future the IB gets better, you can then swap the CPU out

Could you, or any of the other resident experts, expand a little on this? What would be the plusses and minuses of going with a Z77 board with a 2700K? I'm one of the people who was holding out for Ivy Bridge and like others I'm now reconsidering. But I wouldn't mind leaving open the possibility of moving to Ivy Bridge later if it turns out that PCIe-3 makes a significant difference for FSX. Obviously the Z77 boards would let me do this. But are they as settled and reliable as the Z68's, or are they still teething? I'd like to have the flexibility of a Z77 but if that means a significant tradeoff in quality then I'll pass, or at least wait. What do you think?

The later Z68 boards (like the P8Z86 Deluxe Gen3) are also PCIe 3.0 capable., and are also Ivy Bridge compatible with a BIOS update.

The Z77 boards are all brand new...none of them have really been tested/proven just yet.

What do you guys think of ASRock? I'm planning to get the ASRock Z77 Pro4-M and pair it up with a 2500k -- is it worth the upgrade from an AMD 955 Phenom II (clocked up to 3.8 ghz)? I hope to overclock the 2500k over 4 Ghz.

Junkabyte :LMAO:

Ben,

IS Gigabyte board junk? Board quality and reliability these days are a notch down from two years ago, even Asus has problems, why is that? Asus is also among the more expensive ones too, so I would not expect to see bad board reports on Newegg. Which board is the most reliable?

Thanks

It is now Junkerboard. I am not happy with Asus or Gigabyte. I had a dead 5870 from Gigabyte 3 months ago. That is why I called them Junkabyte.

Thanks all for replying. I went with the Asus Z77 Sabertooth as it was on sale and a i7-2700K.
