Beautiful!

These are particularly interesting to me since I lived most of my life just 5 miles from this airport and recall seeing L011's, 727's, DC-9's and 737-200's constantly taking off and landing there. Along with an occasional Eastern Lockheed Electra.

Plus I really miss the old Shea! City Field has horrible seating. Last time I was there, I sat in front of a big support pillar and couldnt see a thing. Not to mention the Mets lost ... again!

The 747-100 never operated out of La Guardia. The airport is weight restricted, the concrete runway extension of runway 22 and 13 cannot support the weight of a 747.

The largest aircraft that operated out of LGA were 767-400s, DC-10s, L-1011s and A300B2/B4s and -600Rs.

I miss Shea from a sentimental standpoint but it ran it's course and I'm glad we finally got a new ballpark. As a lifelong Mets fan Shea Stadium was an absolute dump, even though it was our dump.

BTW having been to Citi Field at least 70-80 times since it's been opened, you are the first person I have heard that says they had an obstruction of view that badly. I know there are certain blindspots in the upperdeck of the outfield corners etc. but I can't think of any beams that would block your view like that. Maybe somewhere in the 300s level last few rows?

In my opinion the seating is fantastic, you are right on top of the field. At Shea stadium you were a mile from the action. I just can't disagree with you more if you think Shea had better seating than Citi Field I mean that is almost asinine to say... I'm sorry man.

Well, I buy the cheapo seats (500 Section) and for many of the seats the view looked like this.

Well you can thank the state of New York of mandating the plexiglass as a saftey feature, It's also the tradeoff you get for being so close to the field unlike the Football like distance at Shea.

You would have those railings at shea but instead of just the stairs for the upperdeck they would go all the way around. Not to mention when you would be high up and in the mezz or lodge where any ball in the air would instantly disappear and half of your view was the over hang.

There will always be blindspots in ballparks and Citi Field has a lot less of them then Shea did.

ummm when I was little kid, I actually saw 747-100s landings and taking off few times from KLGA. There were many playgrounds right under runway approach paths and we could see planes flying over toward KLGA. During that time, it was latest fashionable rage to use 747 for NYC to Miami and back runs. All airlines were competing against each other by offering 747 service to Miami from NYC and back.

Then your memory is playing tricks on you. There never was a 747 into LGA. Like American 833 Heavy said, the runway ends at LGA couldn't support the weight of a 747. See this thread over at airliners.net, if you don't believe me: http://bit.ly/IF6aPZ

Speedbird, I was there and saw 747-100 approaching KLGA past over my head while I was on playground playing soccer when I was little kid!!!

Great pictures of the past. The 1011 was my favorite, just wish there was a good one in FSX. My how time flies bye.

Well, I don't doubt that you saw a 747 passing over your head. But I can assure you that it definitely did not land in LGA, as this airport NEVER saw a 747 in its history. Not even as a diversion. I can only repeat myself and state the facts that:

  1. The concrete piers that hold up the runway extensions out into the water are not strong enough to handle the weight of the 747.
  2. The gates and concourses are not capable of handling such large aircraft.

So no matter what you say, the 747 you saw could not have landed in LGA. It's technically impossible, that is a fact! Like I said, check out the thread following my link. There even is a quote of the former airport director at LGA, who states that they indeed never had a 747 at LGA.

I would say that facts trump memories.

Maybe the 747 you saw was going to EWR or JFK.

Carl,

Thanks for kind words. If you have time, you will find more L1011 screenshots in my past screenshot posts here. Also, I am using FSX meaning that superb freeware Vistaliners L-1011 can work in FSX!!! If you prefer payware, Aerosim L-1011s can work in FSX too as I have seen other people's screenshots showing Aerosim L-1011s in FSX flights!!

Yea I have to agree with the previous posters. There never was a 747 at LGA. I lived the last 40 years near this airport and never ever saw one at LGA. They are prohibited from this airport and always have been.

EWR???? The playgrounds with soccer fields and baseball fields where I played when I was little kid were DEFINITELY not in New Jersey as I was pretty sure. I would know where I played soccer or baseball and I did not even have as being small kid a driver's license to go to New Jersey to play. And walking to New Jersey from Queens would be awfully too far for a small kid wanting to walk to go to playgrounds to play baseball or soccer. The typical runway approach to LGA was always above the playgrounds where all people could see great variety of planes flying above their heads during final runway approach to LGA,

JFK??? JFK was way way way way far and out of way from playgrounds where I played. Believe me, little kids such as me would know difference between LGA and JFK especially we should know where we were and also, the planes were only about 10-40 stories above ground (I do not know how to guess how high the planes were in terms of altitude so I used building floors as measurement) with their landing gears deployed on final descent progress.

I know what I saw and so kids as well as adults did. It was 747-100. Although I did not recall what airline it was, my best bet would be American Airlines as I remembered it was all grey.
