August 16, 201213 yr Author A Quadro 6000 is a GTX 470 with better driver support and more Vram. DO NOT replace it with a GTX 560 Ti. Might as well take your money and set fire to it for all the good it would do you. Overall I would say that a brand new GTX 570 which can be had for a good price now is the minimum I would upgrade to if you run FSX. It's what I use and honestly, it does just fine. Never seen it go to 100% utilization but it does cut it close on memory. A 2.5GB 570 would solve that issue and would have enough oomph to power FSX even if you were using 2+GB of Vram. Then again I have used a 9500GT for FSX and had decent results...so it just depends really. I have the 6000 for a year, so I should be good until then. And I use my computer mainly for computational work. So hopefully I can get my hands on a decently priced 670 by next June. Looking at the way prices are falling off a cliff in this NV vs AMD battle, I might even be able to snag a good deal on a 7970 or a 680! Total Distance Flown: 65,141.138 Nautical Miles (In reality-------I don't have THAT much time to waste on FSX).
August 16, 201213 yr Oh, thanks for that tip. I honestly had no clue about that, because most reviews I had read were pretty happy with the card. I will keep that in mind. I may even go in for a 7870--the only reason I am hesitating is that AMD driver support is horrible (or at least was, two years ago). It still is. Despite AMD moving to bi-monthly updates, after each new driver, something is fixed and something else is broken. I'm so sick with those problems that I plan to switch to NVIDIA soon. Not to mention that AMD drivers don't support FSX's older rendering engine, which means that you have to use hacks to get close to NVIDIA performance and those hacks might cause problems. NVIDIA has always been the vendor to buy for FSX, so don't look at AMD.
October 11, 201213 yr Being a veteran of FSX tweaking myself... I find the less you mess with FSX.cfg parameters and just adjust the scenery sliders the better the performance. FSX is not a well-coded game, BUT a lot of the so-called config tweaks you can find on the net are either outdated (redundant) and/or reduce performance because it's putting too much strain on a system even if it is reported to lessen the strain. I think like you....is the third time I reinstall fsx, the first two times was in a trouble with that cfg.....now, I have my cfg virgin and finally I dont have anymore problems....good fps only trough the ingame menu....
October 11, 201213 yr Moderator 560ti is a god card but it is being having driver issues for ages and nvidia havnt got around to soritnng them out. i have to use older drivers or have constant crashes and not just in FSX Funny you should say that. I just bought a 560ti two weeks ago for my up coming build and put it in my current rig to test out. I've gone though about 3 driver installs and reinstalls and have been having some random crashes when reloading a scenery sometimes or changing time of day or season while already in a session. I didn't think it was a driver issue, but since I haven't changed anything else perhaps that is the problem. Been running FSX rock solid for four years until now without any crashes. BTW, what driver are you using that seems to be solid for that card? Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
October 11, 201213 yr Why all the 560GTX hate? My 560 with a proper OC runs FSX just as good as any other card would. A GPU is only half the battle with FSX.
