June 15, 201213 yr I just reinstalled MD-11 and tried to do the basic tutorial. Everything was fine until after gear and flap retraction on the way to 6000ft. First the aircraft began to lose speed while in autoflight mode, then it went into speed protection. After a few seconds, the aircraft manages to climb to 6000ft but the plane continues to accelerate and I see a message in grey saying 218 PITCH (flashing). CLB THRUST is gone and it's replaced by HOLD. You can see this in the attached pic. I'm really confused because I followed the tutorial to the letter and I only retracted the landing gear and flaps when the above happened. Everything else was supposed to be controlled by the autopilot. Did I do something wrong? Do you all know what caused this? Many thanks in advance! June 15, 201213 yr Are you retracting the flaps/slats on schedule above the acceleration height? If you are at 6,000 feet and HOLD is annunciated, that is normal. It's telling you you're holding level and respecting the constraint at 6,000. "218 PITCH" means that the aircraft is pitching up to maintain 218. Press the FMS SPD button on the MCP to get the AP to follow the FMS speed and the PROF button to get back on the vertical path. Kenny Lee"Keep climbing"
June 15, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the reply. I'll try the tutorial again. Fulcrum One Yoke / FSProjects Airbus Side Stick, Honeycomb Bravo, Slaw Device RX Viper V2 Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, PNY RTX 5080, 48GB RAM
June 16, 201213 yr Just want to jump in and say that the handling is very different when compared empty or full. When almost empty the aircraft will act like a rocket and have a climb rate of about 5000 feet / minute. When it is full I have great trouble even keeping the aircraft in the air. My best suggestion is to try around with different weight settings and learn to fly it with them. Regards Manfred Manfred G. Ships are cooler that you think.
June 17, 201213 yr When you have a yoke with trottle, you have to put the trottle to the max. Normally it would then keep it's speed. Another thing could be that the FD is not properly following (pitching too high with AP on), correct this with your yoke (bit nose down), disengage AP and engage again. Cheers, John
June 18, 201213 yr Commercial Member Everything you need to know is right on that PFD: To put it in really simple terms, white means you're controlling it (or overriding it), magenta means the plane is. You have too much white for it to fly like the tutorial states. Tutorials mean nothing unless you read them word for word. No skipping, no assuming, no kidding. If you'd followed it correctly, you'd see the top of the PFD would be showing all magenta values: under FMC SPEED | NAV1/2 | PROF to 6000 (or higher once you get to that point in the tutorial). June 19, 201213 yr Author Thanks to all for the replies! I need to redo the tutorial and just be more thorough. Fulcrum One Yoke / FSProjects Airbus Side Stick, Honeycomb Bravo, Slaw Device RX Viper V2 Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, PNY RTX 5080, 48GB RAM
June 22, 201213 yr Based off the PFD annunciators, it looks like you have no Speed Hold or Select that is being controlled by the autoflight (in other words, you didn't tell the autoflight to control the speed - it's in manual mode). Set your desired speed in the Speed Window and either push the knob to hold the aircraft's current speed, or pull the knob to select the speed you have dialed in the Speed Window; or if you want to simply let the autoflight system fly the speeds that are inserted into the FMS and then hit 'FMS SPD'. The autoflight and autothrottle system will take over from there. Greg
June 22, 201213 yr Not trying to hijeck the thread; however, I have a question related to speed. This is my first time flying the MD11 and have been flying Boeing's, mostly the 737NGX. At any rate my question is how can I alter the takeoff speed up to 10,000 in the FMC? Default is 250 but what if I want to lower it to 240 till 10,000; as an example. In the Boeing FMC I would alter the VNAV profile; however, it appears in the MD11 FMC it can only be altered from the F-PLAN page? Is this correct or is there another method? Edward Smoker Sr.
June 22, 201213 yr Takeoff speed up to 10,000? Are you talking about the 250 or lower under 10,000 feet? If you're heavy on takeoff, VCL is going to be over 250. Just dial the number you want on the FGS panel and pull the knob. Be careful you don't get to the speed down too far though. Kenny Lee"Keep climbing"
June 22, 201213 yr Thank you for your answer and yes, you are correct you can dial the the speed through the FGS. If you go back and read my question that is not what I asked. At any rate my question is how can I alter the takeoff speed up to 10,000 in the FMC? My question specifically asks if it can be entered to the MCDU (FMC) through a page other than the F-PLAN page or is the F-PLAN page the only place speeds climbing to 10,000 feet and descending below 10,000 feet can be entered? I checked the LAT REV page but did not see where I could alter speeds there. Is there a page I missed that allows these changes? Edward Smoker Sr.

Then under EDIT insert the speed you want to fly at. After that, I think you need to press FMS SPD for the FMS to fly at that speed. Kenny Lee"Keep climbing"
June 23, 201213 yr <_< Had it been a snake I would be dead right now. Again I have to thank you, Kenny. Edward Smoker Sr.
