June 20, 201213 yr Hi all, I have been trying to enjoy FSX for probably about a year now, yet I always end up uninstalling it. First of all, I'll explain why..Basically whenever I play FSX, after a while it will crash. Not a CTD, but a full on hardware failure. The whole PC becomes non responsive and there is a whislting sound in the speakers. When it first started happening I thought it was that my CPU was too far overclocked (core i5 760 @ 3.8ghz, carefully OC'd with enough voltage to pass Burntest/Prime etc for extensive 24 hour sessions). Additionally, I have run the following games with my CPU in this configuration, for 6-12 months without so much as a hitch: Rise of Flight DCS A10c DCS Black Shark Battlefield 3 Arma 2 I believe that these are all quite intensive games in different ways, which led me to believe the problem perhaps lied elsewhere (either that or FSX is extremely sensitive to issues which other software isn't, I am perfectly happy to accept that!) This was fine, I thought I would drop the OC to 3.4ghz. Same problem! - The problem even happens at stock! So, my system is: Core i5 760 @ 3.4ghz 4gb DDR 3 ram @ 1333mhz GTX 560ti Standard SATA 7200rpm drive All of the system is cool and well maintained, and the problem persisted despite a format. Basically, I am unable to enjoy FSX which is a shame because, although not the best, I would be perfectly happy enjoying the simulator without addon airports/traffic etc. My addons are as follows: FSX + acceleration UTX GEX REX PMDG NGX Unfortunately, right now I can't justify the costs of upgrading to a 2500k, new memory and a new motherboard which I have no doubt would solve my issues - I would love to do that. I have tried installing in different orders, various tweaks eg the venetubo, various settings, disabling UAC and playing with windows (using Win 7 64, completely updated) Just thought it worth mentioning all of my software is legal so I don't think it can be issues regarding that. If anybody could help me enjoy the simulator I would be so so grateful! Thanks
June 20, 201213 yr That's a very good question - should I begin by formatting and run an addon by addon test do you think?
June 20, 201213 yr Luke. I have very much the same system but you have a better graphics card than me. It's water cooled to a 3.6ghz o/c, so fsx should run fine on it. I also run all the add one you do and a few more. Thanks Steve.
June 20, 201213 yr If you have video cards in SLI or X-Fire....remove SLI or CRossfire and just run 1 card for FSX. There's a 3g cap if I remember right and your video cards might be breaching that. That was my problem. Also uncheck application managed in your vid properties. That's a small start but should release the freezing. Also double check and make sure your ram is matched to your mobo. Hope that helps. Oh yeah...if you have a Sound Blaster card....remove it and throw it away. Your on board audio will work best....it should be at least 5.1 . Sound Blaster drivers conflict with way to many things. Jeff D. June 20, 201213 yr Core i5 760 @ 3.4ghz 4gb DDR 3 ram @ 1333mhz GTX 560ti Standard SATA 7200rpm drive Core I7 2600 @4.0+ 8gb DDR3 ram @ 1600 GTX 570 (At least) HDD pffff never seen a difference in SDD, HDD 10K or 7200. Dedicate a computer to FSX ONLY
June 20, 201213 yr Hi RWFeldman - I'm not asking for more FPS really - I get 30 consistently with traffic off, just a cure...But i think i have one! Somebody suggested that I completely remove the sim and reinstall somewhere that isnt the default location...I did that and....It hasnt crashed. Very confused about why that would stop a system crash though so maybe I'm too hopeful and should expect a crash soon..
June 20, 201213 yr There is a possibility that the latest version of fsuipc might solve your crashes. http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html Thanks for listening, Kail
June 20, 201213 yr Basically whenever I play FSX, after a while it will crash. Not a CTD, but a full on hardware failure. So Windows 7 boots up? Other programs run? Just FSX crashing with a "full on hardware failure"? You need to check your System Event Viewer and look at what caused the crash. It will record the date and time of the crash. If you're not familiar with the Event Viewer and how it operates, you can Google it or click on the Start button, type Event in your search box then look up and click on Event Viewer. Click on Event Viewer (local), then Custom Views, then Administrative Events. Go to the date and time of the crash and look for an FSX event. It will provide you with the information you need to being your investigation into the cause of the crash. Right now everyone has you just do this, do that type of thing. There are so many causes and the Event Viewer is where you should begin. Best regards, Jim
June 20, 201213 yr This is a puzzling problem and certainly one that deserves full attention from everyone that has any idea of the possible root(s) of the problem. That being the case, it is primarily hardware related, therefore should be in that forum, not here in the FSX forum. I am moving it there, but leaving a link for easy access from here. Kind regards,
June 20, 201213 yr Commercial Member Does your whole computer freeze, I mean do you stills see your FSX or anything else you were doing on the screen? If that's the case I might be able to help. I have had similar problem and I have solved it mostly, although sometimes (like one or 2 times a month) my Windows crashes completely when using FSX possibly because of fix to that problem, but it is still way better than getting constantly frozen. This is what you can try, I have done it on two Win 7 64 bit systems and haven't had problems other than those blue screen of deaths that seem to be extremely rare: Basically, you need to remove folder called repository in Windows/system32/wbem. It is protected windows folder so you first need to take its ownership through cmd, you can find tutorials to taking ownership from internet. You need to stop ome WMI service from task manager before doing this to be able to delete that folder, I don't actually remember myself which one it was, some management service. Then the interesting part, to prevent that folder from respawning you must place blank file named repository to that same folder, and set it as read only from its properties to prevent it from being overwritten by windows. After that you need to restart your computer, and if you did everything right now you should not have repository folder there anymore but instead this blank file. I haven't gotten frozen windows while playing FSX or other games since then. However do this at your own risk, your problem might be caused by something else and I suggest you try other things before this.
June 21, 201213 yr Just came across this post and am on my way out - but - my first thought was - Do you have a Sound Blaster card installed?? ... and then I saw Jeff Neilson's post... This is the clue:- there is a whislting sound in the speakers. Maybe..maybe not.. but if you DO have one installed - then I'd put fifty bucks on it being the culprit.. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
