RV-6A and trim

Featured Replies

Well I started a 125 mile flight today out of Fairbanks in the RV6A ( decided to give the Cub a rest). Took off in overcast weather, set the VOR, and after checking Gmap started the trip. About 10 minutes into the trip, my cellphone rings and it's an old pilot friend. So we started talking about different things, and I kept glancing at the monitor screen, and the RV kept trucking along at 5,000 feet and on course. We talked for almost the entire flight ( yeah I know, distracted flying) and the RV needed maybe two 5-10 degree corrections in course, and about 15 miles out I started a slow descent and started hand flying again.

Pretty stable aircraft.

You know why? Yes you know - it's in your signature, and somehow in mine too :-)

Flying is simple, and if a sim makes it complex where it certainly is not, then, it's not a good simulator. MS FLIGHT does it better than any other I know for sure :-)

Flying gliders since 1980

Flightsimming since 1992

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

Yeah, it is quite stable. Set cruise, trim it out, and it will mostly mind itself unless you've got terrain to clear or wind to fight.

It's my favorite Flight plane by far. I just wish I got to use it more, because I love flying Jobs and the RV-6's options there are pretty limited.

I love the little details, like when you are taxiing in and open the canopy on the RV, you hear the outside noise of the prop and engine just like it is in a RA. The other day I landed the Icon on a choppy lake, the wind aw about 15+ and the lake had a good chop on it. When I touched down, you could see the vibration of the hull going across the chop affect the aircraft, and her the water hitting the hull. When I slowed down to a water taxi speed, I could here the wave action sloshing against the hull. Can't beat that.

I like the RV 6 for the view, with that canopy, also like flying the Maule and Stearman , although the Stearman is a bit more of a challenge ( much easier with track IR) . The Icon is fun for the water landings and takeoffs. Getting to really love the Cub since I now have some semblance of a cockpit. It is becoming a difficult decision to figure out which aircraft to fly, when I open up Flight.

SInce the last title update, my problem with the RV-6A and Maule is the constant ROLL to the left.

Both planes keep banking left, and I can partially correct it with rudder trim but would ceirtanly appreciate the Roll Trim to be enabled.

Any ideas as to how to correct this problem?

Hi,

My experiences are similar to those of Ramón. If I fly the RV6, hands off, for more than 10 seconds it begins a roll either left or right. Any attempt to trim the ailerons, other than stick pressure, has no effect. Rudder trim results in an ever increasing bank in the opposite direction. I've manually edited Standard.xml to include "FlightControls.CenterRollYawTrim" and while it works it doesn't correct the problem. I have a Saitek Cyborg EVO and have adjusted the null zones wider and narrower with no improvement. It seems that one click of Roll trim results in too large of a correction. Presumably, I could add the trim adjustments to my joystick and edit the effect but I don't want to give up the functions that I already have assigned. Constant, unchanging stick pressure to counteract the bank works fine so it seems that a reduction of the change produced by a single trim adjustment click would fix the problem.

Hi Jim

I have eddited the standard.xml file and adjusted the repeat rates of all trims (repeat 256.0000), that gives me a 1 degree adjustment per button press, but even a 1 degree oppostite rudder trim overcorrects the roll.

I think the problem is with all the physics adjustments (prop and wind effects, etc.) they did for this title update. If that is how it works in RL flying fine, but then we should have the Roll trim implemented.

Make sure you have backed the propeller RPM off for cruise (based on the checklists). Too much torque will roll you to the left. If you keep that up near max, you will always be rolling left.

Hi Ramón,

Do the repeat repeat rate edits have any effect with keyboard commands? i was only guessing but thought that thet only applied to joystick button presses.

I set the mixture and propeller RPM manually, I will try with the checklist figures. Thanks for the tip.

Jim.

I don't use keyboard for trims, but my guess is the repeat rate would work with the keyboard.

There is no adjustment for the keyboard. It is already as fine as Flight allows.

I am flying the Maule right now climbing up to 17,000 ft. prop at 70 % MP 17" heading is steady and so is pitch. Rudder trim neutral.

It's not how it works for RL flying. The RV6A won't be as stable as a larger Cessna. For IFR work, a two axis auto-pilot is preferable, and these are installed more often than not. The roll and pitch controls are light, and little effort is needed to keep level and on course, but it won't stay there long if you don't watch & adjust. At full rpms in level cruise flight, it doesn't tend to roll, or not enough, that I'd ever notice. Full rpms are for the fastest speeds, as well as climb, but I'd always pull back to 2350-2400. If you quickly full throttle the engine on a touch & go, the torque to the left is really noticeable. You need to be on right rudder & right aileron as required to stay level.....as it pulls to the left & rolls to the left. My 6A has aileron trim for slight passenger & fuel imbalance.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I will convey this info to the beta site.
