CPU over heating

Featured Replies

See my specs to the left, one mistake that my Gfx Card is 2GB not 1.

I was on FSX half way across the Atlantic the other day and my Laptop just shut off. No blue screen or freezing, just shut off. Is that a sign of CPU over heating? I have warranty from ASUS, hasn't done it since and I've been on High Performance since, should I wait and see if it does it again before calling them? I don't want to go through all that to find it's pretty normal for Laptops.

Cheers!

Welcome to the Hardware/CPU forum! Actually, since this was a CTD, you should have posted this in the CTD forum. Your CTD could be overheating. A laptop or PC shuts down immediately to save your system from further damage. There might have been a BSOD. Some shutdowns are so fast you don't get to see any error messages. I would download the freeware BlueScreenViewer and run that to see what caused the crash. Your system Event Viewer will provide information about each crash too. Memory management also causes these types of crashes. It's impossible to say until you can identify the cause of the crash via the BS Viewer or Event Viewer. Then we can investigate further.

Best regards,

Jim

Despite today's laptop performances matching desktops, desktop PC's are better for running FSX due to the cooling

options that laptops don' t have.

Hi Jim,

It's done it 3 times in total, one just a minute ago when I was doing general things. No errors reported on any of the programs you recommended. But, I'm noticing a pattern, I have a slightly dodgy iPhone cable that's wiring is messed up so have to move it around to charge. I noticed twice (maybe all) it's been connected. Could that be causing a problem?

I really couldn't answer that Luke but one what to find out is to disconnect the iphone cable and see if the errors continue.

The Event Viewer is programmed to capture every event that occurs on your computer, including what's happening when it starts up and what's happening while it's running. I'm surprised there isn't an 'event' recorded for the date and time of each CTD. Hopefully it's just the iPhone cable.

Best regards,

Jim

The USB cable could well be your problem, because if a USB socket shorts out, it results in an instant shut-off, and your computer wont even power back on until the short is "un-shorted"...

I've fixed dozens of these on laptops where people have broken the little plastic tab inside the USB socket and bent the pins left behind so they touch.. If your cable is faulty, then that could be shorting out the USB circuit and it will result in an instant shut-down, in the blink of an eye.

You wont get any blue screen, nothing, just "Powww" and the screen is gone"..
