Steam Sale: Flight 40% off

Featured Replies

The code shows up in your Steam Library. However, you have to install the Steam version of Flight to get Flight to show up in your Steam Library.

If you use the GFWL version of Flight, you have to get your DLC through MS. The Steam version of Flight is required to buy DLC from Valve, but you can still get it from MS as well.

The Career files are shared, so if you install the Steam version you can remove the GFWL version without losing anything.

What you WILL lose is immediate access to new content...

Nice deals on Steam! Hopefully a lot of people will get some extra DLC: the more people playing Flight, the better.

In the meantime I will checkout the other deals: maybe Rail Simulator 2012 will be available at a 75% discount soon...

You're kidding? Isn't this supposed to be easy? :o

So what are my options here? I have Flight and all addons prior to Alaska except for the warbirds installed via Live.

Why would you? You can still buy DLC from Microsoft. Installing the Steam version simply gives you another option for purchases.

For example, I bought Alaska from MS the day it was available and only have the Steam version of Flight installed.

You can buy DLC from steam or directly from the MS store if you have the steam version.

I bought the Hawaii pack, and the F4U from Steam, and I bought Alaska direct from the MS store. Everything was installed using only the steam version of the Flight.

All that matters is the code, once you have that you can get everything downloaded from inside the game. If you buy from the MS store you can also use the 'Games For Windows Marketplace' program to download DLC though, in case there is some problem with in-game downloads. But that program is independent of which version of Flight you use.

The "Steam version" of Flight is basically just a front-end for the same GFWL version of Flight you already have. All DLC is still downloaded from MS, which is why Steam purchases just give you a coupon code to enter into Flight. The code informs MS that you have bought certain DLC and then MS starts the file transfer. While you would have to download the Steam version of the free Flight software, I do not think you have to download the DLC again.

It's worth doing, simply to give you two stores to shop in for Flight DLC.

Alternately, if you have another computer available (maybe a laptop), install the Steam version on it. This will be enough to have Flight show up in your Steam Library, giving you access to the codes without making any changes to your primary machine.

Ok I'll try installing the steam version aswell.

I think RoboRay is right.

In your case (and that of other Xbox Live purchasers), you would have to uninstall the Live version, then download and install the Steam version of the game, then re-download all the Xbox Live DLC content through the Steam installed GFWL, then you could buy and install one of these Steam sale items into your game.

EDIT: I'm not sure if you actually have to uninstall the Plain GFWL version first or not. I'm also not sure if there might be a way to directly copy DLC files from your GFWL DLC folder and get it to work with a new Steam install without re-downloading everything.

I haven't bought any Flight content yet, but we have the free Flight installed on two machines here, one through Steam, then one installed directly from Xbox Live Marketplace/GWFL. When the Red Tails was released, it wasn't on Steam, so I made the free purchase on Xbox Live Marketplace and then played it on the GFWL only machine. After that, it was in my account linked to Steam and I could download and install on my Steam machine too.

So, Xbox Live purchases should work in a Steam install, but not the other way around. If you want to switch from the plain GFWL version to Steam, I think you will be able to transfer the content over to Steam, but it won't work the other way around. In other words, an Xbox Live/GFWL Flight owner can't buy from Steam then load that purchase directly into their existing install.

I stand corrected.

I will keep my GFWL version though: I'll buy new DLC that I want anyway so right now I have no need for Steam.

I mainly did it with the Summer Sale in mind, but it looks like I missed the boat on that.... I've already bought every bit of current Flight DLC I'm interested in buying.

The bundles can be nice, though, if you're patient.

Me? Not patient. :Frustrated:

sales must be bad, it was just released and it's already on sale.

Actually, if you look at the other things in the Steam Summer Sale, you'll find lots of blockbuster "AAA" titles in there, along with the poor-sellers. There's no "lack of demand" conclusions to draw from a title being part of this Sale.

That is one thing I certainly like about Steam, they run some really good sales from time to time.

I picked up another flight sim title I had been wanting for a while on there recently, for practically nothing. It was a great deal.

OK I can confirm that uninstalling the Live version of Flight is not necessary.

I've just install the steam version and Alaska.

I've fired up Flight through Steam to enable my DLC by entering the code that came up automatically + the additional files, then did a quick test through Steam to make sure everything was OK.

Then closed it and fired up Flight the normal way from my original desktop shortcut and voila, Alaska is there and working.

Thanks for the advice. :-)

I was wondering why I logged in and nearly got run over by three Corsairs today......

I was like.... Huh? Nobody buys Corsairs! I hardly ever see more than one.

Maybe this explains it.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.
