July 18, 201213 yr Hello. I was wondering if someone could perhaps help me out. In the pre-flight checklist when doing an engine run-up in the Vans RV6 how does one "apply and hold brakes" ? The Maule has a parking brake this plane does not seem to and just holding "x" on my keyboard does not seem to help either. Am I just missing something? Thanks! -Kyle
July 18, 201213 yr I haven't flown the RV in a while, but I believe Shift-X applies the parking brakes which should help. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

July 18, 201213 yr Or if you just press and hold the designated key/button you have assigned to the brakes (not parking brake), that should also do the trick.
July 19, 201213 yr Author I'm an idiot. Thanks! I find the game is most enjoyable when trying to make it as much of a simulation as possible. For example I don't skip to waypoints and will fly 100+nm for airport jobs as it makes the whole process so much more enjoyable. I feel like I had another question to ask but now I'm blanking..dangit! Oh... I do not choose weather conditions just do free flight and pick jobs up from airports transporting cargo etc. Is it just me or is Alaska always cloudy and rainy? Did I flick a setting switch for "bad weather" and I just missed it?
July 19, 201213 yr Author Shift-X may work but it doesn't satisfy the checklist and gives an "x" as opposed to a check mark if I choose to manually pass that step. What a pain... Bah! Apparently the parking brake was on but the checklist just didnt acknowledge it. I figured it out when I went to take off. I have so many issues/bugs with this game just not doing what it shoud. I still enjoy it so much I don't care.
July 19, 201213 yr Many of the the RL checklists I have seen say "set brakes", but some people use parking brakes and others just hold down the brakes with their feet, as I do. The fellow pilots I have spoken to about this have said that they prefer to use their feet because it is one less thing that can go wrong. The parking brake on a 172 can be left partially engaged and that would be very bad on a hot day with a short runway!!!

The parking brake on the RV-6 is an optional kit that hold the hydraulic pressure on the brake assemblies after you step on the brakes with your feet. This kit is probably not installed in the flight model. That is why the check list says to apply and hold the brakes during the runup.
July 19, 201213 yr A lot of things in the automated checklists don't work quite right. For example, if you do certain things the checklist will lock up and you have to close it and reopen it for it to work at all. Some text doesn't read correctly. Some values for gauges are off. Stuff was reported in beta testing, but it was low priority and only some things got fixed. Yes, it's annoying. It's best if you don't have too high expectations for the checklist, unfortunatly. But then, you don't fly just so you can use checklists; you use checklists so you can fly. :) You can check or set the weather conditions from the "Fly" menu on the map. As far as I know, they do not change from whatever you set them to last, or in your case, whatever the game defaulted to. If you haven't yet, experiment with all the weather conditions. Some are pretty cool. Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Yeah, I've noticed that my gas pressure is always waaay higher than the checklist says it should be. My plane hasn't exploded yet so I think it's OK though :unknw:
July 19, 201213 yr I stopped using Flight's checklists long ago. It's a nice feature but the planes aren't so complicated that I need a checklist for them... I am getting older but I am not THAT old. And they indeed don't always do what they should do. Or I simply disagree with the advice. I will probably use it once or twice when I get a new plane with VC, to find the right knobs and see what settings are normal, but after that I don't need them anymore. I also don't like that you have to go through the entire menu everytime after it closes down automatically when a list is done. Slightly annoying, specially when you are using the lists on the second page.

It would be much nicer if they had a button on the bottom of each page that said "next page" instead if having to go back to the beginning each time.

They definitely are not perfect, but they are a great resource for people like me who have never played a flight sim or flown a plane before... I just wrote down the steps I need to remember so I don't have to use the in game checklist, but I'm finding I need it less and less. It's only about a dozen steps anyway, and most of them are pretty logical.
July 19, 201213 yr I don't use the checklists either. Since the chance of a defective part is zero, i don't see the use of the checklists. I always start or stop the engine when prompted and be done with it. Mark

I use it to make sure flaps are in takeoff position, ,fuel pumps and landing lights on, fuel pump on, check rotation and climb speed, mixture rich, flap deployment speeds, and so on. Just feel funny not using one, and it only takes a minute.
