August 20, 201213 yr Hi, All, I found this link over at Aerosoft's newsletter. Looks kind of exciting. Hope it turns out to be so! http://awgsim.wordpr...rain-europe-xp/ Tom
August 20, 201213 yr Looks interesting. I'm curious to see more of this planet of Europe they speak of. :D "No matter how eloquent you are or how solidly and firm you've built your case, you will never win in an argument with an idiot, for he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous.
August 20, 201213 yr Interesting... but I still can't figure out what this product is. Is this only a mesh with water bodies and a landclass ? Did they add OpenStreetMap/OSM2XP buildings ? What's the source of their data ? Is it a proprietary source with "accurate house/building placement, river placement and forest placement" for Europe ? Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
August 20, 201213 yr Author < ....Interesting... but I still can't figure out what this product is...> We should know shortly, as it's due to be released in a few weeks. According to Xsim reviews, AWG plans to release a North American version after the European one. Also you can find a couple blurry screenshots on their website. http://xsimreviews.com/
August 21, 201213 yr Author More news, and it definitely is looking quite interesting! I'm beginning to get a little excited. http://awgsim.wordpress.com/2012/08/20/terrain-europe-xp-more-info-and-images/
August 21, 201213 yr But they still don't give any information about the source of their files. Are this OpenStreetMap and OSM2XP generated 3D buildings ? That's available for free here: Europe: http://forum.aerosof..._40#entry384806 World: http://scenery.osm2xp.com/ What's the difference between OSM2XP and AWG Simulations ? http://www.google.com/search?q=osm2xp&tbm=isch Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
August 21, 201213 yr I've been in contact with AWG Simulations, who wanted me to sell them a osm2xp commercial version. As osm2xp is now openSource and under a gpl licence, i told them that they have the right to do what they want with it, but that they have to specify the source on the product description. We'll see if the final product has mention of osm2xp and openStreetMap data. edit: Awg sent me an email, assuring me that osm2xp and osm data will be mentionned.
August 21, 201213 yr Hi, This looks interesting, although I too couldn't work out what they were selling as their first post was rather vague. It looks like in the comments section, in reply to someone, they have mentioned using Benny's osm2xp. It would be nice if they could stipulate that their using it under open license on the front of their blog site out of courtesy. Will be nice to see some more screenshots. Rhydian
August 28, 201213 yr Looks promising and due to be released on the 31st in just a couple of days. If it lives up to the hype it will be a cost-effective solution for the many XP10 users who yearn for a better representation of Europe and later the US.
August 31, 201213 yr Commercial Member I am really interested to see the results of this product. Hopefully it is a good start in properly populating the xplane world. REX AccuSeason Developer REX Simulations
August 31, 201213 yr They now released their product here: http://www.awgsim.co.uk/terrain-europe-xp.html But we still don't know what's inside. Is it OpenStreetMap data ? When did they download their source data ? OSM2XP sceneries are available as freeware sceneries. The only new thing I could find in their features is "Beautiful Glacier Textures". Their product is only available for Mac OS and Windows according to their System Requirements. So I guess it's the 1st X-Plane scenery that is not available for GNU/Linux users. August 31, 201213 yr Author Md Max wrote: <OSM2XP sceneries are available as freeware sceneries>. Yes, but the whole of continental Europe and beyond is available for $15.99. Even if it's only what MdMax says it is, I would gladly pay that to save me (a complete newbie with XP) the headache of installing manually all those files. Don't get me wrong, MdMax; I always enjoy your comments (and screenshots)! Tom
September 1, 201213 yr I would gladly pay that to save me (a complete newbie with XP) the headache of installing manually all those files. The OSM2XP files (generated with OpenStreetMap data from May 2012) are available here: http://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/52478-openstreet/page__st__40#entry384806 Unzip the archive in your Custom Scenery folder, install also OpenSceneryX, done. And if you want beautiful glacier textures made by Maxx XP, it's available here: http://maxx-xp.hiking-pa.com/?page_id=456 There's no problem if people want to buy these files. But I think it's also important for them to know what they are buying and where it really comes from before they pay. The OpenStreetMap contributors, Benny the author of OSM2XP, Christian from the Aerosoft forum and Maxx XP have made all these things available for free long before AWG decided to sell it. Happy flying ! Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
September 1, 201213 yr Author There is a lively discussion over at the AWG blogsite. AWG admits it uses OSM2XP, but insists it has further enhanced the scenery with custom specification buildings and glaciers, which are improved over the freeware version of Glacier Maxx. Further, there are scheduled to be additional landmarks and 3D objects in upcoming free upgrades. http://awgsim.wordpr...pe-xp-released/
