Ideal Flight: how do missions work?

Featured Replies

So I bought this program and for the life of me I can not figure out how the mission system is suppose to work.

I've read the online Help about 10 times and still don't understand. I need some very detailed instructions. These below are just way too vague and poorly written.

This is what the help says...

Missions:

1Choose a helicopter or light bush aircraft, maybe with tundra tyres.

2Go to mission page - missions, check "Maintenance Missions" and uncheck "Sea Searches".

3Now in the Flight Generator page, clear the flight and clear the searched list (! buttons).

4Perform a search: If you don't have a location mission chosen, look at the top of the searched list, there should be a few at the top. If there are none then you need to relocate.

5You can see mission locations in the World Map page, use the right hand dropdown list to choose locations onshore and offshore, and browse through them, locate yourself nearby some.

6Aircraft is Serviced: Refers to the FSX Engine time setting. This is set to zero each flight.

I figured out steps 1 and 2.

Step 3 - is Flight Generator page the same as Flight Settings?

Step 4 - assuming I am to hit Search on the black triangle icon page(Flight Settings). It searches but nothing happens. I don't see any new window with missions or anything. What is suppose to happen? What is a 'location mission'? I don't even know where to find that cause that is what I'm expecting to pop up after I do the Search.

So I try to jump to Step 5 to maybe use the World Map page(which I assume is the icon of earth). In there is one Current Airport and one Destination Airport. I don't see any thing 'mission' related.

Can some one walk me through this. I obviously don't get how this mission feature is suppose to be presented or work.

Perhaps a post in the IF forums? Steve is extremely responsive and helpful.

Yeah was really hoping to avoid signing up for ANOTHER forum registration. I've got so bloody many already. Hopefully Steve won't mind replying here.

So you can't be bothered to use another forum, but he should? <_<

He is signed up here, and posts here all the time being very helpful. I'm sure he'll chime in when he has some time.

For missions, look at the top of the "Choose Destination" list in the Flight Gen Page once you did a search or next flight gen.

In the mission page go to "Missions and Vessel Landings".

If you have a chopper and have any vessels checked:

in this case after generating a search you may see a mission at the top of the "Choose Destination" list in the Flight Gen Page, Ship Landing Mission.

If you have no vessels checked but "Maintenance Locations" is checked, then look at the top of the "Choose Destination" list after a new search and see new destinations for Maintenance Mission.

Use the same method for planes, but click on "Sea Searches" if you won't be able to land on the ship.

If you check multiple ships then one is chosen at random for the mission.

Whenever you generate a search from flight gen or a new flight, a mission is generated and added to the top of the "Choose Destination" list box.

Have a go with that and come back...

Thank you for the reply. Really liking your product more and more. Ability to advance time in minute sections is great and pause at different waypoints is useful too.

I have many more questions but I'll start with these....

So if I understand correctly, the Choose Destination drop down menu near the bottom of the Flight Generator page is where we will always find any mission available?

What exactly is the objective of Maintenance Mission? I'm guessing it's just sort of a vehicle delivery mission but not sure if there is suppose to be more to it.

Unfortunately for the moment you cannot choose the world map dropdown items: Onshore and Offshore Locations from the Destination Group list (below Show Destination button) , you will get zero index error. Sorry about that, it is fixed in the update out shortly.

When you are at a base that is nearby onshore or offshore locations and you have maint missions checked they will be found within your flight times and missions will be generated to them. You may get one of these missions come up at random, rather than the regular dept to dest flight plan mission.

Steve

Maint mission is just visit a VOR site remote to airports and land there, then generate a return flight and come back. Pretend you went into the VOR building and resoldered something really complicated with valves and now it works  . Then you went home.

Exactly, a better interface and more missions are planned for the future.

Steve was kind enough to PM me and I wanted to share this additional info since it could be helpful to others too.

"The missions system is automatic, look at the top of the "Choose Destination" list in Flight Gen.

The checkboxes in the missions and vessels list exclude each other.

Sea Searches outweigh Maint Locations, turn off Sea Searches to get Maint missions."

Thanks VeryBumpy, much appreciate it. Yes, I love this addon a lot!.

Sorry about the confusing missions setup, I'll improve it soon.

Here's something came up recently should enlighten things a little with using IF missions:

say you want the detailed aircraft carrier from Acceleration

look for

C:\ProgramData\Ideal Flight 10\Profiles\boats.ini

add:

veh_carrier01_high_detail_sm, Detailed Carrier, 0.1

there is already:

VEH_carrier01, Carrier, 0.1

0.1=fraction of full speed capability of the vessel

...next run IF select your aircraft and in Flight Gen - Mission - Missions & Vessel Landings check "Sea Searches" and "Detailed Carrier", uncheck the other vessels.

from a departure airport near the sea, go to Flight Gen page and clear any flights or searches ("!" buttons) and do a fresh search (remember your flight times), during the search a new mission is built, look at the top of the "Choose Destination" list for the Vessel Landing Mission, if you did not already get that presented as the random flight from the search.

Thanks all for helping with this subject.

This is just not working for me. I don't ever see any missions listed. I've tried the Bell chopper and a 172, I get a whole huge load of airports in the Choose Destination drop down but none say anything about a mission. If I build the plan, nothing in the plan says anything about a mission.

What am I doing wrong? Here are pics of what I get...

This should do it...

There are three Missions and Vessel Landings checkboxes to set:

1) Maint Locations

2) Sea Searches

3) Any Ship

Uncheck all ships and check Maint Locations for maint missions.

Check Any Ship for ship missions.

Check Sea Searches to make only searches.

Checking more than one ship chooses a random one of those checked.

Locate yourself where there will be navsites miles away from airports, try the default ENFL Floro for example islands with navsites all over the place and Gullfax oil rig.

Nope, none of the above gave me missions. What did work was if I increased my min/max Duration Hours. I have to set it to 1:30/2:30 and then I finally got 1 offshore and 1 onshore mission at the very top of the Choose Destination list.

But that is not good cause both were way farther than I usually fly, was about 190nm. So is there no way to make short missions?

  • Commercial Member

Yes flight times are very important. Try the Floro departure there are lots around there, nice place too.

I've got the map working here so I can see what navsites are around, I'll make it available soon. More airports = less mission sites. During the indexing the program finds navsites miles away from any airport. There is a setting in Config.ini MinOtherLocationDistance=15.0
