September 13, 201213 yr I have a 5 hdd/ssd setup as follows: 1. SSD 120G (Operating System) 2. SSD 240G (FSX) 3. SSD (New) 480G (Empty) 4. HDD 2TB Files and Data 5. HDD 2TB Files and Data Backup My FSX folder has FSX and all of my utilities and payware aircraft. It is about 1/3 full. I have quite an extensive collection of payware sceneries (All of ORBX and about 15 others). If I put all my sceneries on my FSX drive, it will be overloaded. I purchased my 480G SSD originally to reinstall all of my FSX. I would rather not go through that extensive process (again). Instead I thought about putting ONLY the sceneries on my new 480G SSD and point FSX toward it? Is it even possible to do this? How, specifically, would you go about it? Please explain as if I'm a complete noob. hehe Thanks in advance Dennis Trawick Screen Shot Forum Rules
September 13, 201213 yr Scenery can be anywhere you want, the easiest solution is to choose the new SSD during install. But failing that, install to your FSX drive and manually move the scenery. If your FSX install is d:\fsx and the new SSD is drive e:\, then if you create an empty 'FSX' and 'FSX\Addon Scenery' to place manually moved stuff, then you only need to change the drive letter in your scenery.cfg (usually in c:\programdata\microsoft\fsx\).
September 13, 201213 yr To elabarorate: Have a good look at your scenery.cfg file. Each addon has a section which includes the install location Example: [Area.143] Title=FTX_AA_2S1 Local=ORBX\FTX_NA\FTX_AA_2S1 Layer=143 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE If you were to move the Orbx folder from it's location within the FSX folder to a drive H: and just locate it as suggested in the above post, you would change this to: [Area.143] Title=FTX_AA_2S1 Local=H:\FSX\Addon Scenery\ORBX\FTX_NA\FTX_AA_2S1 Layer=143 Active=TRUE Required=FALSE Bert
September 14, 201213 yr I think Orbx has to be installed within the main fsx folder. You can move stuff manually but I'm guessing the FTX config programs won't work correctly and IIRC they state no support for installs away from what their installer does. But I don't think that is a problem. I was faced with the same problem and solved it by moving all the files/folders in the main FSX folder to the new drive, then doing a link from the new drive to the (now empty) main fsx folder. To the OS and all programs it looks just like everything is still "inside" the main fsx folder. Here you see that in the drive letter options the drive is assigned a path to C:\Flight Simulator X. It has no drive letter of its own. When you browse the folder tree it looks like this: Note that instead of the "normal" folder icon for Flight Simulator X, it shows a "linked folder". Just make sure that when you do your backups, you probably have to specify the disk to backup, not just the "C:" drive. scott s. .
September 14, 201213 yr I think ORbx has to be along with your FSX. I don't know how to move Orbx after the initial install. But Orbx deserves the exalted position of being on the SSD and not the HDD. But I have all my photosceneries which really takes up lots of space to an HDD. Airport sceneries and airplane addons don't take up that much space so I leave it with the fsx. If my SSD gets too crowded I could mopve those out by copying them to an HDD and modify the scenery.cfg file to point to the new location and then delete the original folders within FSX. September 15, 201213 yr Here is how i do it it's super easy (as Long as Your using Win 7 ) http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?59145-Take-your-scenery-off-your-SSD-drive-to-save-space-by-P38man once you get the Syntax down pat you can use the links to move around what ever you need, I have All my scenery on my smaller SSD and cant tell any difference. I also used links to put all my Photos,Videos and Documents on my Mech drive to save even more space, I have my OS and FSX on my SSD at under 85 meg.
