Months ago I posted about the release of a fan made Space Sim set in the Wing Commander universe. That Free Sim (Based on a modified Freespace 2 Sourcecode project engine) was completed after ten years of effort by the fans and was absolutely incredible.

 

Now another free fan made release is on offer after more than four years of labor: A game set in the Battlestar Glactica universe, and done to such high standards that the modelers were hired to also construct Ships for the upcoming Battlestar Galactica MMO. ^_^

How did this one manage to avoid the "cease and desist" order from Universal?

Like Star Trek Fan Fiction (or even entire fan made episodes) some content holders using their brains rather than their lawyers realize that this keeps interest going in properties that might otherwise slowly stagnate in the public eye.

 

Free advertising. And if you look at the YouTube comments for the game, there are a lot of people saying they are about to buy the DVD boxed sets because their interest and enthusiasm has been renewed by this release.

 

The reaction from the studio would probably be quite different if this was for sale........

Here is a video of two back-to-back missions of typical Freespace missions from the Blue Planet: Age of Aquarius fan made campaign. It will give you a good idea of the type of thing to expect. The current game is too new for any good game-play vids to have been released yet, so I hope these will do to give you an idea!

This game is a handful! Battlestar Galactica is known for its extremely...... active battles, and dog fighting in this game is akin to being thrown into a hailstorm in your underwear. Task saturation is a very real possibility amid the general chaos, and the Cylons surely do love flinging nukes! Its extremely recommended to have a good joystick handy to assign some commands to your stick controls. That, or grow some extra hands!

 

Also, the graphics in this game are outrageous. No video I have found yet gives even partial justice to how good this game looks.

OK two patches in the first month, and this is the second! Patch 1.0.2 DOES NOT require you to install patch 1.0.1 first. In fact the Windows version will actually delete it if you've already installed it. Mac users should delete the R1.0.1Patch.vp from their Diaspora folder before installing this version.

 

Helpful hint: Do play with the presets under "advanced options" in the game launcher; they completely change things like the lighting, shadowing, shininess etc applied to objects throughout the entire game and can make a significant difference to the entire "Vibe" of the the effort.
