I backup into a live backup HDD and once every 6 months (more or less), i backup into a standby HDD. I just can't afford to lose my data.

I feel your pain, Anthony!

Last week my backup flightsim test computer's hard drive lost it's boot sector entirely. Fortunately, I managed to retrieve the data contents via a dual-port docking station (BlackX).

Two days later, my main development machine died with a scrambled Vista 32 OS. I had to replace the machine with a new one that's frankly a bit of overkill for what I run on it (i7 3770 w/ 16GB memory). It took me several days to get all of my tools reinstalled and configured; Max9 SP2, Photoshop CS8, GMax, DXTBMP, and a dozen or so additional tools.

I haven't had time yet to remove the HD from the old dev machine to attempt retrieving the C gauge source files, but hopefully that will work also, otherwise I'll have to rely on my last backups.

So, as an extension to all this discussion how many people do clean installs (O.S included) on a regular basis, say annually just for basic "housekeeping"?

Do you believe clean installations breath life into a PC?

My PC is almost 3 yrs old now and although I have no obvious problems my FSX load times are getting painfully slow. BTW, I defrag and run CCleaner regularly.

Gosh guys, I'd re-install the OS on my FSX machine pretty much every year, wiping all data in the process. I mean, I have all my installers and serials backed up on my laptops and external hard drives, but I still have to reinstall, re-configure, re-tweak everything etc. Takes me a full day to do, but once you've done it once, it's fairly easy to do it again...

When you are in the mood. Sometimes just thinking about doing it brings up things one might be similarly fond of. Root canals comes to mind. ^_^
