October 23, 201213 yr First I'd like to point out that my first port of call was the Milviz forum. Couldn't register so came here. After reading in another thread all the 'Ooos and Aaahs' about the B55, I threw apathy to the wind and bought the Baron. My first impressions were 'What's the fuss about? It's no better than the Carenado B58, which is gathering dust and cobwebs. But. After a few flights the lil' devil started to grow on me to the point where I now like it very much, more so than the C310! Now comes the real reason for this post. I cannot, for the life of me, get it to start cold and dark. I realise I could save a flight C&D but I guess I've been spoilt by RealAir. Is there a way of getting round this? The other thing is, and I accept it's probably an FSX shortcoming, the nav lights show through wings! I'm just getting in the zone where I believe I'm really flying then I glance out of the window and see a socking great green star on top of my wing! Is there a way round this as well? Apart from those two bits I'm very taken with the aircraft. Good job. :good: P.S. Miffed to find out there was a half price sale not so long ago. The World is divided into two groups. October 23, 201213 yr While you're waiting... My first impressions were 'What's the fuss about? It's no better than the Carenado B58, which is gathering dust and cobwebs. Sacrilege! Blasphemy! Maybe you just have to have a soft spot for B55s - or maybe just a soft spot - but B58s are so cold and impersonal. Glad to hear you're coming around properly now. I cannot, for the life of me, get it to start cold and dark. OK, maybe I did something magical sometime back and don't remember what it was, but other than some finicky planes like the Flight1 Mustang that sometimes require some massaging with a default plane pre-load, all of my planes start cold and dark just fine, including the B55. My default flight is cold and dark, somewhere with something simple (don't remember because I rarely start there and with that), but once I did that everything else pretty much worked. I assume you're already doing that, though. Scott

October 23, 201213 yr Author Hi Scott, frankly, I'm not really a twin engine man but this one seems to have a little more built in character. All the aircraft I use in FSX start C&D. Legacy, RV7, 337, etc, etc. My default is the trike with the ignition off. Are there settings in the aircraft.cfg that can be fiddled with? I was about to have a look-see. October 23, 201213 yr I do the same as Scott for C&D: Set up a flight using the default C172 parked at my local airport, shut it down to cold and dark, and save that as the default flight. Make sure to leave the fuel tank setting on Both, leaving it on the left or right tank only can cause some problems. I also set DisablePreload=1 in my fsx.cfg, which might also help avoid messing up addons. I'm not totally sure that's necessary but it doesn't seem to hurt anything. For addons with a config tool that can set the startup state I set the C&D state that way, otherwise the above default gives me a cold and dark state. I've used this with several addons and have not had any problems. I haven't tried with the B55 yet, I purchased it along with some other addons but haven't got around to flying it yet, I'll try tonight and see if it behaves any differently. Barry Friedman

October 23, 201213 yr Taking a look at the question i saved a flight then opened the .flt file in documents/flight simulator x files and edited the following entries where True to read False ( EG: LeftMagneto=False ) and saved the flt file , it loads the flight with props briefly spooling down ( a second ) but all systems off. October 23, 201213 yr Are there settings in the aircraft.cfg that can be fiddled with? I was about to have a look-see. I'll let the experts step in from here. I haven't done anything special in the Baron's aircraft.cfg to get cold and dark to work - it just worked right off like my other aircraft. Scott
October 23, 201213 yr Author OK, stand easy everyone. Back story here. I made the mistake of making the Legacy my default flight. I really ought to have known better because I started to get GPS turning off after 10 minutes. So I made the trike my default. Of course the trike has no battery, generator, lights or even a parking brake! Hence no C&D. Reverted to the default C172. Turned everything off, saved the flight and BINGO! No fool like an old fool eh? Oh Chuck, good pointer. The only thing I couldn't get to stay off were the magnetos. The true to false thing might just be the ticket! Thanks fellas The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA
October 24, 201213 yr Moderator The silliest thing Microsoft/ACES ever did was to make the uber-simple Trike the default aircraft... ...for precisely the reasons you've mentioned! What far too many folks do not understand is that there are twenty-two settings that're included in the "default flight," and that all aircraft you load obtain those settings from the "default flight." That is also the reason why one should really not use an "addon aircraft" as their "default flight..." ...rather they should use the humble, default C172 as their "default flight" whether they ever load or fly it. By following this simple advice, they avoid the need to "load the C172 first" before loading their complex addon aircraft! Fr. October 24, 201213 yr Author ....."load the C172 first" before loading their complex addon aircraft! You know the expression 'Practice what you preach'? I forgot that advice. But it'll be a long time before I forget it again. The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA
October 24, 201213 yr Moderator That is the point of taking three minutes to load the C172 default, then saving it and making it the "default flight..." ...then you don't have to "remember to do that first!" October 24, 201213 yr Author You doing this on purpose? I forgot my own advice and made, in this instance, the Legacy my default. If I'd have remembered my own advice I wouldn't have done that...Would I? The World is divided into two groups. Those who say "Give me a link" and those that provide the link. WWG1WGA
