How to convert DX9 textures to DX10

Recommended Posts

Besides having to pay for a $30 program that does not work on all textures all the time, lets post some info on how to manually convert all those white or grey or missing textures so they work and show up properly in DX10 preview mode.

There must be some FSX modelers and texture pros that know how this can be done.

Lets get those airplanes and airports looking proper folks!!

Amen :Praying: It's the one and only serious problem with DX10!

There was already suggested to put step by step texture conversion procedure(s) into the how-to doc.

Where is it?

Here's one guide.... http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=128039. The first post has a link to the tutorial.

I might add that it might be easier just to get rid of the FS9 stuff completely and run just FSX stuff. I don't have anything FS9 anymore. If you have solely FSX install, you are completely compatible to DX10. DX9 stuff comes from FS9 and previous versions of FS.

Jim we are not talking about FS9 but for FSX addons like Aerosoft that are combatible with DX9 and not combatible with DX10.

Okay. Apologize. I'm not a texture expert and thought any product made for FSX is DX10 compatible as they have the .dds format. But I do understand now a product can be FSX compatible too if FSX can read older texture formats and FSX has the capability to read FS9 textures in DX9 only. I still say that you should get rid of those products that don't conform to the DX10 formats. There are so many FSX products out there now. I could understand the problem if FSX was just released and not very many addon products were made for FSX but there are a ton of products out there now. That was my point. I did some searching on Google and find that it is no problem converting the textures to be compatible with DX10 but you would also have to change the code in the Model for it to work. That's probably why you can see some textures compatible with DX10 and some not as the modelling was not coded properly. Here's the link I looked at - http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3308335/Converting_Jpeg_textures_of_FS.html. Just trying to help you guys!

There is no reason to apologize Jim and I'm sorry if I make you feel that way with my previous answer. It was a fast reply because I was at work. Thank you very much for your help and suggestions. We all here try to make DX10 great!

So I downloaded the guide that you posted above but for me that i'm not so tech guy looks very difficult to do all these conversions. I hope for someone to find a much easier way like a downloadable fix as Steve's  The best would be if Aerosoft make the fix!

Hi Jewel:

You can use these two files to convert your old aircraft textures to DXT5 format: The first one is the bat file, here:

and secondly, "ImageTool" from the SDK here. The links give you a direct download to wherever you save your downloaded files: just place both in the aircraft texture folder and dbl-click on the bat file. It will convert the bmp's to DXT5 .dds files.

Post back if you have any problems. I should add - there's no guarantee this will make the aircraft "DX10 compatible", because - as has been said already - the problem may well be within the mdl file itself, but there's no harm checking, is there! Just backup the aircraft first.

does anyone know if scenery textures can be converted? Although Orbx sceneries are mostly compatible, some 3D grass textures don't display properly and similarly for Aerosoft sceneries.

Would like to add one more problem I found out today with AI traffic and DX10. Orbx just came out with North Amreica GA AI traffic add on (free by the way). Unfortunately, in my case all the AI they have added shows the Ghost-white texture.

Hello Paul! Thanks for your help but my problem isn't aircraft textures but scenery textures. This tool works for scenery textures too?!
