November 16, 201213 yr Hi all, Firstly hello as im new too the forum, Secondly this month i started building up my new FSX PC, I want to run it pretty smooth with decent graphics as do most of us.. Ive currently got an Asus P8Z68-V-pro motherboard, Intel I7 2600k and 8GB DDR3 Vengence memory. Im looking at purchasing a GPU to go with all this and work in harmony, As anything can be better from my original 5450 !!, So option's . Gigabyte GTX 660 OC 2GB, Saphire HD7850 OC 2GB, these are the main two im looking at currently, I like the idea of the saphire as it's nearly £40 cheaper but does that mean its a worse of card ??, Also what figure's are best too look for too run FSX ? Does 2GB make a difference or will 1GB suffice ? Cheers guys.
November 16, 201213 yr Author Cheers for the reply, Although i should have said my budget only really allow's up to £200 ideally 150-180. Im not a serious gamer just like the odd flight with nice graphics when time allows !
November 16, 201213 yr Commercial Member In that case 660 would be your best best for FSX. Although if I was in your position and wanted to save cash I would just get a 560TI since FS is more CPU bound. Rob Prest
November 16, 201213 yr Author Cheers for that, Will i notice a massive difference between the two with my current setup ???
November 16, 201213 yr GTX 670FTW or 680FTW YUP and YUP! or GTX 660 OC 2GB, if on a budget! Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
November 16, 201213 yr Commercial Member Cheers for that, Will i notice a massive difference between the two with my current setup ??? You probably wont see anything special regarding FPS however you will be able to use higher AA and a higher resolution without taking a hit, also smoother performance. You will definitely think it is worth it once you have the card running. I have your CPU running at 4.9ghz combined with my old 560TI it destroyed FS9 in any scenario and FSX runs very smoothly, just upgraded to a 670FTW to make use of the 4 monitor support. Rob Prest
November 16, 201213 yr I have the 560 Ti 2GB, a relatively cheap card, and can run my sliders max except for AutoGen which is set at Very Dense and I see a very smooth and nice FSX, over Orbx. My system is similar to yours and I love mine. I will be upgrading my GPU soon, but for your needs, I recommend the 560 Ti as it has served me very well. William Sequeira
November 16, 201213 yr I upgraded a while back to a 1.25 GTX570 and am very happy with that. Remember that FSX is much more CPU bound than GPU bound, so youwill probably not get much (if any) more frames per second with a better card, but as Rob says, I found I could use a lot more anti aliasing and certain tweaks such as usepools=0 certainly reguires a card with at least 1 gig of DRAM. Definitely go with Nvidia rather than Radeonthough as MS flightsims have always played better with Nvidia cards. IAN Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia RTX5080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2024 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

You will definitely think it is worth it once you have the card running. That's right. For FSX: always buy Nvidia instead of AMD and overclock your i7 2600 K to about 4.5 Ghz. Minimum : GTX-560 TI ( TI version ! ) Good: GTX-570 Better: GTX-580 , GTX-660 TI ( TI version ! ) Best: GTX-670 , or higher. November 19, 201213 yr Author Hi guys cheers for all the replys, Well i wen't and purchased the GTX 660OC and to be honest am not overly impressed, Ive seen many video's using the lower 560 TI etc and all seem awsome compared to what i have. Im guessing the TI does make a massive difference in gaming, Im actually thinking of sending this card back and purchasing the 560 TI instead and saving a few quid. Cheers
November 19, 201213 yr As said by NickN from Simaviation : DONT buy a Ti video card,!!!! especially a 660 bad mistake.... spend the money on the 680 GTX single monitor 1.5-2GB video memory, multi monitor above 2GB video memory. Read it here : http://www.simforums.com/forums/new-build-help_topic43791.html Jan.
November 19, 201213 yr I just buy a cheap but reasonable performing card. I won't spend more than $150 on a card. Now the prices have gone down even more. For $100 you can get a brilliant card.
November 19, 201213 yr Author I did appologise if this wasn't the correct forum, Have since learnt there is a hardware one. Anyway, As above what could you reccomend then ??, I too don't want to spend too much on a card. People seem to be doing well with the 560 TI ? not too sure as to why i shouldn't go for one. Im budgeting around that price, it doesn't have to be a brilliant card just run smooth.
