November 21, 201213 yr Melbourne Airport YMML has announced it will build a third runway. http://www.news.com.au/top-stories/third-runway-at-tullamarine-is-cleared-for-take-off-as-melbourne-airport-expands/story-e6frfkp9-1226520709081
November 21, 201213 yr Position of it couldn't be further away from the International Terminal. Like Sydney they aren't planning runways very well, too much taxi operations Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
November 21, 201213 yr And with Essondon becoming an International Airport with new terminal in the very near future, is a new runway warranted. I can see Virgin and Jetstar moving to Essondon, especially if landing charges are cheaper. November 21, 201213 yr Position of it couldn't be further away from the International Terminal. Like Sydney they aren't planning runways very well, too much taxi operations Yes Matt, considering the media talked it up as being 'close' to the International terminal and able to 'quickly get to the gate'! I think Melbourne is in a far better position than Perth. At least Melbourne is planning. Perth has failed to do so and flights such as Air New Zealand and Thai Airways (including all others like SQ) are being delayed over 60 minutes due to a shortage of gates(due to construction work). November 21, 201213 yr Position of it couldn't be further away from the International Terminal. Like Sydney they aren't planning runways very well, too much taxi operations I'm going to disagre with this. Melbourne airport isn't huge. Taxi times are short by world standards. The eastern side of the runway, what will be designated 27L will be the most used as the wind comes from the west more often than the east. It looks like taxi time to 27L will be shorter than to 34. However it will be a decent taxi back towards the terminals after landing on the new runway, but again nothing extreme.
November 21, 201213 yr It'll be a quicker taxi than the one from Avalon to your hotel :-) seriously, what a dump. I'm sorry, it just doesn't scream 'international jet-setter' to me! Unless you also get a heli shuttle... Glad the Essendon situation was clarified, I was trying to work out how they'd extend that! Simmo W, Melbourne, Ozhttp://www.youtube.com/user/id5556

Most of the problem is due to the fact that all the FIFO operators insist on operating in two small windows of time during the morning and the afternoon, which is when the big intl carriers also operate into and out of PER. Yes but the problems I was talking about Ryan had to do with construction at the International Terminal causing delays to flights. Let me see if I can get some material on this and post it up here.

Sorry, I do get what you are saying now, but I din't know that any gates had been closed/efected by the construction. To my knowledge, there were 5 gates before construction started and there are still 5 gates now. I don't see how this causes delays? At least that is what the manager of Thai Airways at Perth International told me. EDIT: I'm making some queries now about the status of the gates and the reasons for delays.
November 21, 201213 yr Gate 51 is out of service for the construction. At least that is what the manager of Thai Airways at Perth International told me. Now that you say it, I do remember reading somewhere that gate 51 was being upgraded for A380 ops. Do you know if this is the case or is it just in the way? I'll have to go out and talk to my mates. After speaking to one Airline Manager today I am pretty sure it is out of commission. As you said it is probably being upgraded for the EK380 services starting in 2013. Also China Southern are planning a 380 service too. I have emailed the airport since phoning them is useless these days. Can't get anyone on the line.

It is officially confirmed, Gate 51 has been closed since October 1, for construction of additional taxiways and aprons for the new Domestic Tier. Separately, I saw somewhere that the concreting for the Aprons will be completed by years end.
November 23, 201213 yr wow, from announcement to start of build just four years....YBBN has been languishing with a runway across the prevailing wind, begging for a second runway for the past 6 years, work only began this year and it already handles more traffic than YMML. Kudos to the YMML Airport authority for planning and implementation! Will Reynolds Flight Sim Addict
