AA with a ATI 6790

Featured Replies

Hi All,

As you may recall I tried DX10 about a month ago, but suffered a few more stutters and couldn't get to grips with the new Anti Aliasing at-all so reverted back to DX9.

An annoying turning finals in the NGX deploy gear then ooooh CTD! Has made me consider giving DX10 another go.

The real downer for me was the increased micro stutters and even more the AA - With DX9 using 4xAA, 16xAni and setting the slider in to Quality as opposed to performance gave me just the right level of AA in the virtual cockpit, none of the lines on the displays were jagged and looked as they should.

With DX10 all I could see was jagged lines and ugliness...

Any tips here - As stated its using an ATI Radeon HD 6790 card - And I get currently 25 locked FPS when flying over ORBS Aus with all scenery sliders set to the max! (In DX9) whereas I got about 15-20 FPS under DX10...

Many thanks in advance,

James

Hi All,

Sorry to bump an old topic I started, but couldn't find any more information - Did anyone have any luck with AA and a ATI Card?

It seems to be that it's a serious case of the shimmers that is getting me. I've spent all afternoon experimenting with various AA settings and I get some serious shimmers inside and outside of the cockpit - It'd be bearable for flying with steam gauges, but with a full glass display it's a little harder....

Anyone care to help at all??

I was using the Asus AMD HD 7870 and had no AA problems what-so-ever. None. It was excelent but it had only 2 Gig memory. In weather at large airports that had a large amount of graphis (FSDreamteam and other add-on airports), there was pretty nasty stuttering. The stuttering was a big issue with me. So, I bought a Asus GTX670 with 4 gig to take care of the stuttering problem. It did exactly that. BUT, as far as I can tell, Nvidia has a problem handling AA. No matter what I try, I still get AA even with the latest drivers. It's new so I will play with it a little more but so far, in my opinion, quality AA is not as good as the Asus HD 7870. The Asus 7870 was so good I had set it and forgot it so I don't remember the 3D settings in Catilist. PM me if you wish.

Sorry for a slow reply - How did you get the AA to work properly. I've tried a large number of AA settings when using DX10 but always end up with lots of shimmers in the cockpit, and a lot of jaggy lines. Not so bad outdoors but once in the pit its terrible and a lot of dials are unreadable!

You need RadeonPro.

http://www.radeonpro.info/

http://www.radeonpro.info/manual/contents/the-visual-tab

Did you run the DX10 patch from AVSIM... If yes go ahead here...

Only tweaks you should have in your FSX.CFG are the wideviewaspect=true and that highmemfix=1. google them if confused. Any Bufferpools tweaks? comment them out with a semicolon ";" for now. Proceed...

Download and install RadeonPro. It must be running in the task tray to work.

1. Make sure FSX is in DX10 Preview Mode.

2. Enable AA and Aniso INSIDE FSX. Or no AA for you!

2b. Set FSX to Unlimited FPS you will lock in Radeonpro.

The rest of this is all in RadeonPro...

3. Create a Profile for FSX in RadeonPro (there are Youtube videos if you need help making profile).

4. In visual tab of RadeonPro Set AA to Application Controlled. Do not enable MLAA, FXAA or SMAA.

5. Set Antialiasing Filter in RadeonPro to "Multisampling(box)"

6. Enable and Set Antialiasing Mode to SUPERSAMPLE (slider to the right).

7. Enable Anisotrophic in Radeon Pro and set to 16X.

8. In Advanced TAB Set Texture filtering and Mipmap both to "High Quality"

9. In Tweaks Tab Set Vsync Control to ALWAYS ON.

10. Enable and set Dynamic Framerate Control to 30.

For fun this is optional...

Go into the OSD TAb and turn all that on. Including the show API and FPS option at the bottom. Set to TOP for where to display it. It tells you GPU percentage load and VRAM ammount in use and temps and FPS ect...

Try that on for size. :)

Brilliant thanks - heck I've actually never heard of that program! Always used catalyst control centre myself, looks like this has a lot more options - To confirm, with your settings do you no longer get any shimmers?

Confirmed. Although there are a few kinds of shimmer we can refer to here. AA shimmer in the cockpit in gauges as you pan your view. Shimmer in water which is quite annoying and Autogen Shimmer. 4xSSAA cleans up the cockpit and the autogen. 16xAF in radeonpro cleans up the water.

Again since DX10 AA is default 4XAA (MSAA), setting Supersample in RadeonPro makes it 4xSSAA.

Here are shots of my settings. I find this a good balance on my 7970. They worked well on my 7950 as well which I had for a few weeks. Keep in mind I was writing that guide for DX9. However. The settings are the same except for being in DX10 preview and having the AA box checked in FSX once I went to DX10.

Since then I discovered Shader Model 3.0 from Bojote for DX9. It gives me the same performance in DX9 as I get in DX10. The trick to remember though is that if you are going to try it, you have to re-run the DX10 mod install.

One thing is for damn sure. ATI likes DX10 and Shader SM3.0 in DX9. I can fly in 3 layers of 8x8 clouds with maxed cloud density at 25-30 fps with DX9 SM 3.0.

Although I do drop weather to HIGH instead of maxed for daily flying for sake of performance balancing. I want my approach into Portland or Seattle to be smooth in all weather in my JS41. :)

Anyway. Let me know how it turns out for you on YOUR card. I know it is working great for me. :)

Hi Charles: Good Excellent write-up! Any chance you could put this info into a doc that we can insert into the "DX10 "How-To" doc?

The Nvidia GTX XXX gpu's have been the "status quo" for the last three or four years, but they seem to be making a bit of a come-back, now, and we're pretty short of some knowledgeable and permanent help for our new DX10/ATI users. Your great input is surely needed here, and would be appreciated by many!

pm me if you like. Many thanks,

All the Best,

Sure thing. I'll start building something. Then I'll see if I can bang off a video.

Keeping in mind a 6790 is a budget card so I'm looking forward to hearing how it works for you.

I have a ATI HD5870 1GB and using DX10. I have never had any succes using AA outside FSX in either DX9 or DX10. So to put it on the list. There is no two identical situations (sadly)

AA in FSX and aniso enabled. EDGE in CCC though allthough i have Application controlled enabled

Driver version? Has to be 13.4 I think and through radeonpro. Have you tried it?

ATI CCC alone had no effect in DX10 for me. Tested 3 cards. All the same. Had to use radeonpro.

Perhaps 5870 is too old though. I never had one.

#1. If you are not on 13.4, I strongly reccomend you get on it.

#2. Download and install RadeonPro. It is ATI's nVidia Inspector app...

http://www.radeonpro.info/

#3. Set CCC to defauls and then Set up Radeonpro how I have here.

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/404430-optimal-settings-for-ati-users-with-fsx-great-results/?p=2656246

Post #108. Only differences are you DO have to enable AA in FSX in DX10. nVidia and ATI users alike. No matter what you do, you will NOT have AA in DX10 unless it is first enabled in FSX when running DX10. In DX9 mode, for ATI users it MUST be off in FSX or it conflicts with ATI's AA system when you OVERRIDE AA in either CCC or RadeonPro. But I know for a fact in DX10, vsync will not work forced from CCC or the vsync line added to fsx.cfg. It must be forced how I show in my screenshots in the 3rd link here within RadeonPro.

Good luck if you "try it". I see no reason why it should not work on a 5870 provided you use DX10 in FSX, Enable AA and Ansio in FSX and set up exactly how I have. Unless the 5870 is just a wierd card. In which case we will be able to determine my method is only usefull to HD 6000 and 7000 series cards. Which have been out for 3 years. I tested on 6950, 7950 and 7970.
