NGX APPROACH QUESTION?

Featured Replies

hello,

im just curios upon my landings. when i make the final approach turn on ils, the runway seems to only be 1-3nm away and my aircraft has to adjust really fast. my question is can i bring the aircraft more further for example:

you can see in this incredible video, all he as to to is follow the straight path while his final approach turn is made so many miles out. you can see this at 1:22. im just curios is to whether i can perform this task way out rather then the latest possible time when the runway is 1-3NM out.

many thanks, i hope i dont sound to confusing.

In the real world a 737 type would 'normally' be vectored onto intercept the ILS at 10-20 miles (depends on soooo many factors) closure on the extended centre line is again 'normally' 30deg of runway heading, if intercepting rwy 27 from the north a intercept heading of 240 would be given from approach radar to intercept the localiser at the desired range (10 - 20 miles).

If your at 1 - 1.5 miles away your wayyyyy to close even for a visual approach so you need to change your approach to the localiser. Note most glide slopes are 3deg so for height you can do a quick calk for your height (you should never intercept the glide slope from above, you approch it from below in level flight), 20 miles 6000, 10 miles 3000, 5 miles 1500, 2.5 miles 750 ft (all AAL (QFE) add runway elevation if QNH) ... You get the idea.

Depending on terrain plan on being at 3000ft about 20 miles out closing the localiser with a 30 deg closing heading, roll out on the localiser and establish ... Maintain your height and adjust your speed and configure for decent ... Watch the glide slope decend and decend wen intercepting ... You should then be around 10 miles out with lots of time to fly the aircraft in and config as required.

Hope this is what ur looking for

Happy landings

Rich

I think you want to learn a little more about the ILS...

Are you flying offline without default ATC? Normally you intercept an ILS outside of the final approach fix or outer marker if it has one. This is a point about 5 miles from the airport. In real life there's minimums ATC has to turn you onto the localizer. So if you fly with default ATC they overdo it and you should have a nice long final.

hi,

many thanks for the answers. if it helps my fmc is programmed correctly just on approach it brings me to close in. isnt there a simple way where you could instruct the fmc to extend the final approach turn.

many thanks.

If you are selecting a runway without a defined approach you can put a distance into Runway Extension, which puts you onto a straight course up to 25 away.

If you are selecting a runway with a defined approach then it should send you to the first point in that approach which would be further away than 1 to 3 miles....

Sometimes you need to find a fix further out to give you time to intercept/setup. If youre not using ATC, you need to adjust your flight plan.

You need to program in a STAR ... However ... Ryan is right you need to read up a bit, also a good ATC program would be the 2nd thing to get (Radar Contact is a good choice) ... Do some research on how an ILS works and what your instruments tell you (the basic FSX tutorials are very good to start you off) there is no easy answer because of so many factors to with wer your flying into and what you are doung. Remember if your trying to fly an ILS your flying IFR (even if ur VMC) and flying a 737 IFR manually (or via auto pilot) is not a task to be taken lightly. If you have never flown a ILS do some pratice in a cessna, get the basics under your belt, if you get radar contact take it up a notch and do some short IFR flights with ILS landings then fly the NGX ... Its going to take time to master .. When you think youve cracked it add a 15kt cross wind, then do it with a viz of 1/4 mile ... That'l make you sweat LOL.

Anyway ... Good luck, sorry couldnt be of more help in such a short time!

hi,

gazzareth, that could just be the trick, now what i do is just select the approach way point for example ASTRA1C and then just select the ils runway which im landing out and that it. you mentioned an extension, could you maybe tell me how this is done.

many thanks

hi,

capt Richardo, i can happily safe i'm very confident at doing an ils in an ngx most of the time it's a CAT111. my question was just to add an extension to the final approach turn, that's the only part i have not yet mastered.

okay guys i have some pictures to try and help what im trying to say.

as you can see in picture one i have set up my sid correctly and chosen the right departure route.

on the second picture i just roughly chose the ils runway but chose the right star

on the third picture u can clearly see how close my final approach turn is to the runway for ils, and my aircraft has to work its buttox of in a matter of seconds to get into the center line. now as you can see in the video he just makes a straight in towards the runway no last minutes banking what so ever.

Did you read the replies you have got? There telling you, the problem is your use of the FMC, no point in me repeating, just learn about SID,STAR and ILS, your posting the same mistake as the start. Have another read though your replies. GL

Actually in your pics it appears you're flying a DP/SID (departure route/ standard instrument procedure)... that's not an ILS.

I would recommend reading the link I gave you in my first post above^^
