Gamespy sign in problem

Featured Replies

Both my room mate and I are having this problem on separate computers. When I click "sign in" after entering my account name and PW; nothing happens. Not even the message "connecting..." and then an error message; just nothing at all happens.

When I unplug the router I get an "unable to connect" message; which leads me to believe that my network is OK and the problem is with Gamespy. I am in SE PA USA and use a local internet company called RCN.

Multiplayer was fine two days ago which was the last time I tried before this issue came up.

Anyone else having issues?

Donald

I had the same problem last night .... ironically, just as I started looking into using it for the first time. Just my luck. Glad to know maybe it isn't just me.

Just noticed this issue as well, nothing happens when I click sign in! Hmmm....

It would seem that FSX's Gamespy went "OFFLINE" at about 11pm Eastern Time, last night (Wednesday Dec 5th 2012).

While it is hoped that this is just a temporary situation, it does raise the question :-

"How much longer will Gamespy be committed to support FSX, now that the product has been dropped by Microsoft, and if Gamespy does stop supplying matchmaking Services for FSX, will there any similar replacement. ?

Gamespy has always had a bad wrap from the FSX community ( and not without good reason), but it is better than nothing, and does provide visibility for a large number of Multiplayer sessions.

The Virtual Aviation Expereince also has a non-gamespy server for people to use.

I'm having this problem, too. Makes me wonder if the end of the FSX online play is here. I hope not.

OH DEAR -- The GLU may be starting to Unstick !!

(GLU is the "new" owner of Gamespy)

http://www.examiner.com/article/glu-mobile-quietly-pulls-gamespy-open-off-the-table

While this article does not appear to directly relate to FSX (?), it may well be the writing on the wall for FSX.

Background:

IGN bought GameSpy in 2004 for $54.6 million -- more than $50 million of it in cash.

Gamemaker Glu Mobile Inc. lost $3 million in the second quarter and bought GameSpy Technology for 600,000 shares of stock, worth about $2.8 million.

The world is falling apart as we know it.................naw this is to be expected from gamespy

soo what do we do now?

im having the problem to i uninstalled the game twice thinking that was going to help. but still did the same thing...nothing.COME ON GAMESPY GIVE US A BREAK!

We have seen this before. I would hang in there. It has been my understanding for years... Microsoft PURCHASED the GameSpy engine to use for FSX on the "get go"... as they did not want to re-invent or invest $$$$ on a new multiplayer level game engine. The company "GameSpy" ... (now GLU)... does not HOST FSX... Microsoft does.... using this engine for mulitplayer operation. That is WHY GameSpy never responds to any inquires about FSX on their site.

Point 2.... Lockheed recentely "purchased" a liscence for only the "Mission" section from Microsoft... (NOT GameSpy)... to use for their Prepar3d project. And if for some reason my guess is incorrect... I would assume they will get our business... as they use this to host Prepar3d on their server(s).

Point 3.... IF, the "plug was pulled"... my session.... which is still up and running via this engine... would be down.... it IS NOT. An educated guess is at this point... there is probably a server issue on logging into the multiplyer section of this software. For those of us that are already connected via the multiplayer engine... and have not disconnected.... are still ok. There are still several of sessions up and running as I type this... see eariler post by .Davethewave2 of FSOPEN.

However... crossing my fingers... like everyone else.. In the mean time... I'm going to continue flying.. until it goes down.

(sigh) -- Sorry, but you are misleading others with incorrect "assumptions".

Microsoft LICENSED the Gamespy MATCH making software, to include in FSX, to provide the MATCHMAKING and SOCIAL NETWORKING aspects of FSX. The actual MULTIPLAYER system that FSX uses, is one designed by Microsoft.

Neither GLU or MICROSOFT "HOSTs" FSX Multiplayer sessions.

Session are Hosted by Individual users, using their FSX in a HOSTING Mode.

All GAMESPY does is to facilitate the initial CONNECTION of other players, through their MATCHMAKING servers, and the Friends and Messaging system.

LM "licensed/purchased ?" the ESP code from Microsoft. LM did not "Inherit" the Gamespy Licensing, and chose NOT to obtain the their own License from Gamespy, to include in P3D.

LM does NOT "HOST" anything P3D on "Their Servers". Like FSX, the P3D software has its own Hosting mode. P3D users "HOST" sessions, but WITHOUT the Gamespy match making services. (Direct IP connect only)

NO .. If gamespy goes down (as it has), it does NOT stop your FSX Hosted session from running, even if it initially started when gamespy was ONLINE.

All that happens is that nobody can now FIND your session listed on GAMESPY.

DIRECT CONNECT still works.

FSOPEN effectively has its own SERVER LIST, that list the IPS of those Hosting sessions running their FSX addon. After seeing the FSOPEN list of participating servers, players can connect by DIRECT IP CONNECTION, and not need Gamespy to to the Matchmaking.

(any listed session, that does not list an IP, and was using Gamesspy, for it Matchmaking, will not be joinable)

======

Currently, your FSX session is Running, and anyone who connected to it by Introduction through Gamespy, when Gamespy was last running, "can" remain connected to your session.

No NEW players will be able to join your session via Gamespy, as Gamespy is DOWN, and your server is no longer informing Gamespy that you exist. Also, as Gamespy is DOWN, no new potential players can connect to Gamespy, to see what sessions "might" being listed by Gamespy.

====

Gamespy will not "support" you, because they licensed their Gamespy Matchmaking system to Microsoft. Microsoft is Gamespy's customer, not you.

Even when ACES were developing FSX, and the issues with Gamespy and FSX became apparent, both ACES & GAMESPY blamed each other for the issues, and nothing ever got resolved.

====

The important thing, that is not know to the FS Community, is what that Microsoft-Gamespy licenses was, and under what conditions and timescales that Gamespy "Contracted" with Microsoft, to continue to provide Gamespy Matchmaking Server services to FSX.

The service costs Gamespy money & resources to maintain. It would be highly unlikely, that they would continue to provide the service, (once any existing contract to do so expired), because they are "NICE GUYS".

GLU seems to be running at a loss (for the past few years at least).

Why would they continue to provide the services to FSX, if it was not cost effective.

Its not looking good.. especially as the service has now been down for almost 24 hours, with no apparent announcement, or server status report from GLU.

Its down my end too!

Regards

Michael Atherton
