Bye Bye Gamespy

Yup, it's confirmed that gamespy is officially gone. I just tried to log in and found that it just won't respond no matter how often you click the join button. All the other functions are available though LAN so there's still shared cockpits and tower options.

No it does not mean that. There are still many alternatives to using GameSpy, such as simply one person deciding to be the "host" and providing an IP address to which others may connect.

Agreed, but what is now missing is a universal way for that FSX player, who decides to "host" a session, to let other know he is doing so, that he is currently up and running, his IP, and who the session is being run for.

You can "Build it" , but people won't come if they don't know it exists.

This is what is now missing from FSX, now that GLU appears to have pulled the plug on Gamespy.

It's upsetting, that they bought out Gamespy, only to close it down a few months later.

However, I do feel some enjoyable feelings of "Pay Backs", when I look at their STOCK performance, since buying out Gamespy. Impressive DIVE !!!

What is strange is that although one cannot LOG INTO Gamespy, you can still set up a new account, and you can still log into the password reset section, and reset your password.

However, I just tried calling GLU's Corporate Office in California ( at 11am their time).

Talk about "NO RESPONSE" .. what I got was an Answering machine, telling he that

"Nobody was available to take my call, but I could leave a message, and someone would get back to me AT THEIR CONVENIENCE". !!

I suspect they were all on the phone, to their StockBrokers, trying to sell their Company Shares, before they hit rock bottom.

we still keep our multiplayer server up 24/7, you can connect to it via IP, here's how:

1. When you click the multiplayer tab in FSX, click "Local Network (LAN)" button instead of the GameSpy option

2. Enter your name then click "Connect Directly" then enter our IP address of 67.170.81.45 then click "Find Sessions"

Also join our TeamSpeak3 server for voice communications or if you have any questions:

Teamspeak3 client download: http://www.teamspeak...?page=downloads

Server Address: ks.jmainguy.com

(once you load TeamSpeak3, in the top left panel click "Connections" then "Connect" and enter "ks.jmainguy.com" into the Server Address field, enter a Nickname. There is no password.)

Also, we're hosting a multiplayer flight tonight at 9pm EST. Check out http://msflights.net for more info.

There is a community built around gamespy's matching function that relied on users coming from that internal interface and enjoyed that style of game play. These users are now effectively disenfranchised.

I suppose we should be grateful it lasted this long, The zone certainly did not, for those who can remember.

I just run a test with my pal. Gamespy is gone, that´s for sure.

The LAN option with IP did not work. Which ports should be in the range in FSX network settings?

FSHost & Client was mess. Manuals are what they are. Let´s say we would like to fly in formation, should we both run both programmes? In one attempt we were in a same server, he saw and heard me, but I didn´t see or hear anything. In another attempt he was night flying while I was in bright daylight, and of course I didn´t see him.

you should beable to connect to our IP: 67.170.81.45, there's people connected and flying right now. If not hop onto our teamspeak and we can help you out. See my above post for the details.

I got to talk to Microsoft this afternoon. I was told that the reason why FSX could no longer connect to GAMESPY, was because Microsoft were no longer supporting an "obsolete" product, that they were no longer selling.

(Would be nice to see an OFFICIAL statement from Microsoft on this, I could barely understand the person in India, I was connected to !)

Nice Pay-Back to the FSX Flight Sim Community that did not embrace their "FLIGHT" game.

Log into AVSIM's TeamSpeak and set up sessions sharing the various IP's necessary. That's what it is there for (among other things)... And, you can see TS channels and those in those channels right here in the forums on the right side bar at the top.

hello

Is it possible to fly in shared cockpit mode while using the FSX LAN option with someone who is online (I mean not in my local area network) is they give me their IP?

If not how can I fly in shared cockpit mode without gamespy?

Thank you

You can still flying with Direct IP, in shared Cockpit.

It seems than many do not understand the role that Gamespy "played" in FSX Multiplayer.

Think of a FSX session as a PARTY.

You "HOST" the Party at YOUR HOUSE (your PC), using your party equipment (FSX in Host Mode - it acts as the Session SERVER)

There are TWO ways guest can come to your party (at YOUR House)

(1) You give them your Address (IP Address) and it's up to them to find their way there .. figuring out how to get there themselves.(Lan Direct Connect)

or

(2) They use a LIMO service, (Gamespy), that you have previously told of your address (IP address), and the LIMO service just delivers your Guest to your House (PC). The Guest do not need to know the address, just the name of the Party, and the LIMO driver takes care of getting them there.(or any other Party that the Limo company knows of)

Once Guest are at your party (Joined your Hosted session), there is no really difference between Guest that found their own way to the Party, or those delivered by the Limo Driver.

The only slight benefit that the Limo Guest have, is that the LIMO service also has a system, where those they drive to the party, get extra benefits as Limo Customers, ie Gamespy FRIEND lists etc etc.

---

Now, what has happened is that the LIMO Company (Gamespy) is no longer willing talk to you, the Party Host, or show potential Guest, that you have a Party, and bring Guests to it.

The ONLY way now to get Guest to come to your Party, is for you, the Host, to directly give guests your Address (IP), and have them come to you Directly (Direct Connect).

One DISADVANTAGE of the LIMO Company, was that often they would not answer the phone, or just hung up on your guests when they called to get a Limo to bring them to your party !!! (Gamespy has disconnected them, or you !!)

BTW:

(1) If your Party is a disaster,(and CRASHES) its YOUR fault as the Host for not providing a good enough environment for the party. (faulty PC, poor internet connection, low bandwidth, allowing disruptive (bad aircraft) Guests ) Don't be blaming the LIMO Driver (Gamespy) for your Party Crashing -- he has nothing to do with the actual running of your party.

(2) If two Guest want to "hook up" at your Party (Shared Cockpit), that up to them and your party -- again, NOTHING to do with the Limo Driver (Gamespy)

(3) If you have too many people at your party, and your house is too small, then that will cause issues as well.. Guest leave, or keep bumping into each other etc etc .. again, NOT the Limo Driver's fault -- after all, as the Host, you control how many can join your Hosted session.

My FSHost and FSClient do not interact. I went throuhgh the painstaking portforward process.

Manual states that I should give different ports for fsx and fshost if i want to fly in my own sessions. In fsx you cannot name just a spesific port but a range. I tried the default 23456, range from 23455 to 23456 and 23455.

I answer to myself. It was a wrong port range for FSX (given at the FSHost web-pages). FSX post range is 6112-6122, not the 23455-23456 which are for FS9.

By forwarding these ports we were able establish a session via direct ip.

Yes, the problem was / is that some did not appear to be temporary. I will be going back and looking to see if we can fix that. Otherwise, please use the two existing channels there until we get a fix for the temporary issue.
