December 11, 201213 yr Hi all, not sure if this is the right place or not but would just like to ask if anyone could tell me how to lock my LOD setting at 6.5? I've tried the sim at this setting and it works fine with all other tweeks added for my system which is now really smoooth and crisp, if I don't enter the settings menu and confirm them in fsx will it stay at 6.5? hope this makes sense. Cheers Rod.
December 11, 201213 yr Hi Rod, yes you are correct. Both the TML and the LOD will revert back to default if at any time you access the FSX settings control panel. So as long as you don't access FSX settings all changes in the cfg will remain the same. However, if like me, you fly with different cfg settings dependent upon your flying scenario, which to be fran ,you should be doing, then it can be a pain having to change things around all the time. The way round this is to get hold of Orbx's tweak and go http://www.fullterrain.com/product_fsxgo.html with this little app you can set your cfg settings with lots of different profiles each relevent to different flying conditions. You simply choose which cfg profile you want to use before flying, click GO and that's it! December 11, 201213 yr I believe you can not lock the setting, and it will revert to the defaults if you adjust any other display or scenery settings in FSX, similar to how the texture max load feature works. EDIT: Looks like someone beat me to answering!
December 11, 201213 yr Author Rockliffe & zowen11 I appreciate your input on the subject (confirmed), but getting back to Rockliffe I think I will leave the one cfg as I've been flying many different senarios from 12hr flights to 1hr flights UTX,GEX, regions Orbx regions with Rex, Radar Contact, Fs2crew, GSX, UT2 all operating on these flights with all fsx sliders to the right except water set at 2xhigh and the flight experience is as I said crisp, clear and stutter free so not game to play around to much more. Cheers Rod.
December 11, 201213 yr crisp, clear and stutter free I was afraid that increasing the LOD would negatively affect performance, so I haven't tried altering the LOD settings outside of the default range. What zoom do you usually use in the virtual cockpit? I tend to fly considerably zoomed out, because I like to see all of the primary flight instruments and the outside world.
December 12, 201213 yr Author Hi Zowen11, setting LOD at 6.5 and I am now at 5.5 that I must admit I really haven't seen a great deal of difference in the quality or the performance of the sim on my system and yeh as you I like to get as far back in the pilots seat as possible, NGX737, Capt Sim 757,767,777, PMDG747
December 12, 201213 yr I suggest using 6.5 and zoom 60%. setting LOD at 6.5 and I am now at 5.5 that I must admit I really haven't seen a great deal of difference in the quality or the performance of the sim on my system and yeh as you I like to get as far back in the pilots seat as possible Thanks for the information. I will try readjusting my LOD settings over the weekend. In any case, while I like flying from the virtual cockpit, I use 2-D cockpit panels (e.g., FMC, PFD) when flying manually because of the greater clarity and precision available.
December 12, 201213 yr Thanks for the information. I will try readjusting my LOD settings over the weekend. In any case, while I like flying from the virtual cockpit, I use 2-D cockpit panels (e.g., FMC, PFD) when flying manually because of the greater clarity and precision available. Any changes that you make with the LOD will not have any great effect on the frames, but they will impact on texture loading ie. blurries, the speed of scenery loading and smoothness. Simply put, you are increasing the amount of data that is being loaded for a specific area and by increasing the area you are in fact increasing the amount of autogen that is being loaded. December 12, 201213 yr I was getting OOM errors until I changed my LOD setting back down to 4.5. Now FSX seems to be running very smooth and looks great. You can get some addon utilities like FSPS - Xtreme FSX PC V2, and set cfg settings in it. These settings will always stay locked until you change them. Robert Yunque

December 12, 201213 yr I've reverted back to default for LOD. As I fly on three screens in EyeFinity. This was because FSUIPC was constantly telling me I was running out of memory and ending my flight. As I usually fly from high density areas and REX clouds at 4096. As I have FSX running on an SSD I haven't yet noticed any difference. I had it set to 6.5 previously.

Lod anything higher as the default max from FSX is asking for troubles, unless you are trading in something else to bring it back in balance;-) FSX is all about balance on a local system and that's different per setup and user preferences chosen ;-) André
