Window reflections

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am not crazy about the side window reflections (probably just me). Is there a way to get rid of the reflection? I searched the forum but could not find any help on this.

Thanks

DarcyYEG

You will have to remove or edit the corresponding .dds files from the /texture.vc folder in your SimObjects/PMDG 737-800NGX directory.

I do not recommend it, because modifying dds files, or modifying any file actually, can yield some pretty bad implications.

Would it be the same for the reflections on the instruments? And would there be any perf gain if you were able to disable the reflections?

Its been a long time since i did it and if memory serves me right i added a .bak to the end of the .dds reflection folder of the specific aircraft file.

First do a search for window reflection in the MS FSX forum.

I don't want to modify it. But if I remove it will that mess things up? If removing (rename) it won't hurt anything what is the specific .dds file.

Thanks for your help. I love the 737 and pretty well fly it exclusively.

Is there not an option in the FSX to turn off reflections?

Yes, but these are fake reflections, they are just an illusion.

Removing them would bring stuff like black windows etc, I've had my fair share of that!

Well I don't like them either, never... when I use to fly the real airplanes as a private pilot, the first thing I would do was to clean the windshield with plastic cleaner, then remove all the papers and stuff that other pilots would have left on top of the panel. Flying on a sunny day with with papers on top of that is terrible. The reflections are usually one of the layers on the windows files, instruments etc. I've been lucky enough to request from other companies the clean files and they have been great in sending them to me. Try to fly one of some planes with heavy reflections at night when the sky is black, there is one that you see repeated all the instruments in from of you twice.

Even the NGX is terrible with the layer of dust and finger prints in the instruments when you are ready for takeoff with the sun behind you. One thing is a couple of reflections for artistic sake and another is over doing it.

I'll suggest make backups of the dds files, and start deleting. :)

It seems to me that you guys are flying a different bird. Well, taste is nothing to be discussed - for me both is ok, windows reflections and I never have had problems with the instruments either.

Regarding the landing lights there had been some discussions here in the forum. Pilots flying the real bird where sure that PMDG realized it the right way (as far as I can recall it). I tried myself to use Redux lights and returned to the original state for many reasons. The experience was quite disappointing.

Redux light have two settings Narrow and Wide due to the filament in the bulb...

If you use narrow they look nice, of course this depends on the taste as you mentioned. In Television we use aircraft landing lights for enclosures PAR 56 and PAR 64 if you want them Wide you just need to twist the bulb inside the Frame... when you switch on the smoke machines you will see the beams.

I need to clarify due to my previous comment, that the files in question are the ones with glass.dds in them or the glass specs.dds which are the side reflections and/or the finger prints etc... those are the files you need to experiment with... you can open them easily with a dds converter or the Nvidia plug in for Photoshop if you have those programs.

You don't have to delete them (my bad) just renaming them to something such as glass_dds.BAK will help and experiment.. You can also make copies of the files and put them in a new folder for when you need them. You can also move this files to a backup folder while you experiment... If you don't like the end result, just remove the bak extension and rename them properly, or bring them back to the original folder. Some of these files include some gauges numbers and stuff...

For me is not only personal taste, I got a blurry vision without my glasses and the reflections made it more difficult for me. I can't use my glasses due to the proximity to the monitor...

Well I tried renaming the glass one in the texture.vc and the front just went black. I also tried the glass specs in the common folder but that didn't work.

Oh well just thought I would see if it was possible. I will just have to accept it as is. Love this plane though!

Thanks for the help

It goes black because a "file" with that name and a clear layer "no color" needs to be in that folder in order for you to look thru the windows. Its a matter of some knowledge with graphics and understand what you are doing. Also some of these files includes some graphics, therefore not "ALL" the file needs to be clear, only the areas needed.

LOL ... exactly what I'm thinking. Modeling use and dirt is alright, but I think PMDG went way over the top with that in the NGX.

That cockpit is a rusty, dusty, smudgy mess. I've been to some real-world NG cockpits here in Europe and none of those cockpits even remotely looked that messy, even in aircraft that were almost ten years old.

Judging from the writing on the windshield, that PMDG 737 is supposed to be from 2008 or newer. It should definitely look cleaner and better maintained.

I don't know what scrapyarded 737 specimen PMDG had available for their artwork.
