December 16, 201213 yr Hey guys, I am wanting to upgrade my computer to run FSX with pretty high settings. Haven't really thought about a price limit at the moment, but I'd like to keep it reasonable. I am currently running FS9 with tons of scenery, REX, ActiveSky Evolution, GEPro, iFly 737, etc. I am also using 3 monitors with Eyefinity. If I upgrade to FSX I want to run the same addons but with the PMDG 737. My current setup: -i5-750 Lynnfield 2.67GHz CPU. -Foxconn P55MX motherboard -Sapphire 6950 Flex Edition Vid Card with Eyefinity(3 24" monitors) -2GB ram This is what I am looking at upgrading: -Ram: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820233240 -Motherboard: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813131819 -CPU(which I will overclock): http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116501 What kind of frames can I expect to get with 3 monitors, GEPro, PMDG 737, REX, and other airport sceneries? Thanks for the help. Commercial Pilot ASEL, AMEL - Instrument - 325 hours
December 16, 201213 yr Just my thoughts... I would take a look at getting the best from the following page, and these would just be for starters: http://www.jetlinesystems.com/performance.php

If I were to get the 3770k and a slightly worse motherboard would I have better frames than I will with the 3570k and the motherboard I posted? Commercial Pilot ASEL, AMEL - Instrument - 325 hours
December 16, 201213 yr Thanks for that. If I were to get the 3770k and a slightly worse motherboard would I have better frames than I will with the 3570k and the motherboard I posted? I would get that mobo you linked, an I5 3570K or I5 2500K, and this RAM What cooling solution do you currently have?
December 16, 201213 yr One thing that I noticed that you did not tell us, how many frames per second are you getting now in FS9 with your current configuration, and what frames are you looking to get when you upgrade your system out of FSX ??? to the left, you can find my specs and I am generally getting 15-18 FPS (Locked at 20) and I'm on a Laptop!
December 16, 201213 yr If you are going to use high settings and three monitors, probably no more (if not less) than 30 frames per second. With my stock system, I get approximately 25 frames per second on good days with the PMDG B747 and settings near the maximum. Add any moderately complex weather (e.g., lots of clouds or rain) or somewhat demanding scenery (FlightBeam KSFO) and the frame rates can drop below the 20s.
December 16, 201213 yr Author Right now I am getting around 40fps in FS9. I don't really have a set number I'd like to get in FSX, I just want it to be smooth, so probably around 20. As for cooling, I am not really sure what I am using. Thanks. Commercial Pilot ASEL, AMEL - Instrument - 325 hours
December 17, 201213 yr I just want it to be smooth, so probably around 20. Then you should definitely be fine, but it will probably take some time getting used to it coming from 40 frames per second. I always envy some of the ultra-smooth videos I see on YouTube. Even though I sometimes get a smooth 25 frames per second, the videos are so liquidy that they must be upwards of 30.

Add any moderately complex weather (e.g., lots of clouds or rain) or somewhat demanding scenery (FlightBeam KSFO) and the frame rates can drop below the 20s. I'm surprised and dismayed by this. I have just an i3 and a Radeon 6850 (1 monitor), and in my PMDG MD11 and clouds/rain/some AI I get around 15-20. I was hoping an i5 or i7 would put me into the upper 20's or 30's solid. Now, I'm not so sure I'll throw money into a CPU upgrade if the pay off will be so little. Clark Clark Janes
December 18, 201213 yr Take in mind that @Owen run the 3770 at 3.4Ghz stock speed, overclocking up to 4.5 - 5Ghz is the way to go with FSX !
December 19, 201213 yr Now, I'm not so sure I'll throw money into a CPU upgrade if the pay off will be so little. Take in mind that @Owen run the 3770 at 3.4Ghz stock speed, overclocking up to 4.5 - 5Ghz is the way to go with FSX ! If you're good with computers and overclocking, you can probably enhance performance with the i7 significantly. Because of my inexperience, and because I have a stock Dell XPS 8500 (not a self-built computer), I am not very comfortable with overclocking. Also, my graphics card is not the greatest or the most flexible. . . .
December 19, 201213 yr I can't afford the OC cooling or burn out risk, so I would stay at all standard speeds as well. Clark Clark Janes
December 19, 201213 yr Nowadays all OC it´s basically just a click in the BIOS-Settings changing the CPU-Multiplier. Yes, you would need a better cooler than the stock-one. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/370594-software-hardware-guide-for-fsx/
December 19, 201213 yr Just my thoughts... I would take a look at getting the best from the following page, and these would just be for starters: http://www.jetlinesy...performance.php This is interesting link. I did not know that about a RAID0 system causing a performance drop. Also I did not know that - or how to - setup a drive as a separate cache. A 64 gig SSD is cheap. I am going to research this. My RAID0 system crashed a couple of days ago. While I am in the process of retrieving the data I have decided to go with a single SSD for my main HD now and just rebuild/install my system and FSX. I did choose a Samsung 840 Pro - it is suppose to be pretty fast. I am pretty sure I will see a good performance boost. From what I understand the gain from dropping my 2600K and going to a 3770K would not be significant. What do you guys think? I am on an 1155 MB designed for OC (specs on left). At around $300 us for a 3770K that is not that expensive so if I could see any significant increase in a 3770K - say %20 - it would be worth it. Word on the street is in around 4 months Intell has something new launching....but that will be an expensive upgrade. Happy simming! If you´re experiencing stutters due to a slow/fragmented HDD then yes, the SSD would fix that but it won´t give you any FPS more in FSX ! The 3770k overclocked @4.8 - 5 Ghz (de-lidded and good cooling) coupled with fast memory could reach your desired 20% boost or even more. You know that FSX runs best with Nvidia ?
