4GB GTX680 + HT ON + TileProxy = I can't believe it's not butter!

You got that right, for the most part things tend to be more expensive here. I've bought a few things from the States or even the UK, not limited to PC parts, even running shoes etc. It's all way cheaper than over here, to the point where I'm saving $70 AUD on a pair of runners and that's including shipping!

The key is just to make sure you're buying from a reputable seller. It's a shame Newegg doesn't ship over here.

By the way my GTX 680 is the 2GB model not the 4GB. Had the 4GB model been out when I bought mine I probably would have gone down that path.

I have never bought computer parts from the US, but maybe this is the piece of gear to start with! I have been shopping around, because you've all made me want this card - in australia, that's the cheapest price i can find for an in-stock item. Anyone in the us has it easy with computer builds. :)

Btw, I just looked up umart again and the price i quoted was $10 LESS than the cost - my brain is trying to bring these numbers back to earth a bit!

Oz, if push comes to shove, ship it to my house from Newegg and I will ship it to Australia to you. I wonder how much shipping would that be and if it's worth it.

BTW, I have Amazon Prime, so I can get it shipped to my house for free. You would just need to pay for shipping once (to your house).

Well, thanks for all the input! Because of this thread, i've been trying to buy a ftw or classy via newegg and amazon.

I was almost sure newegg don't ship to oz - which is unfortunately correct. But i was hoping for amazon - again, won't ship here.

Bimmer - i'll pm you and see if this works out - thanks, although i guess one way of looking at this is that your thread has cost me 600 bucks! :)

Not sure i can afford to keep reading avsim much longer...

Edit: richard, gigabyte ud5 rev2 mobo and i7 950@4gig. Antec 1200 case (pretty big).

Ant - any hints on where you sourced comp parts for oz.

UD5 is fine it will fit, sleep on it you didnt mention your power supply and what GPU card do you have now ?

PS if you go thru this long sending process make sure you get the EVGA you will get what you are paying for and have had not one problem with one, they also have lifetime warranty I think.

I concur with Richard, Rob... Go for an EVGA card and personally, I would also recommend Amazon. They have an awesome 30-day return policy.

Power supply is an antec 850W - pretty well regarded, large form factor supply that only works in the Antec case.

Running a GTX570, got them the first week they came out. Good card, but i'm definite i want a triple monitor setup. I believe that a second 570 could do this - but the gtx680 sounds like it has much more grunt for antialiasing and 'opus cloud rendering'.

I'm with you on the EVGA, although i've tried a bunch of brands that's a 100% clear cut choice.

I am sold on the 4 gig card concept, the brand, the 'need' for a gtx680 model - does anyone have an opinion on the evga FTW vs Classfied? Was planning on ftw but am tending towards the classified as it's a little faster i think and not too much dearer.

Honestly, Rob, when it comes to videocards, I rather buy a good brand name reference card and OC myself if I want to take that route. For instance, even though I did get a FTW version which comes slightly overclocked, I am able to run it faster than most OC'ed from factory cards on the market! All I did was add a custom BIOS which allows me to run gpu vcore at 1.212v and added an H80 water cooler to it. My card's GPU is at 1.274GHz and mem is at 6880Mhz. 2GB versions can overclock a bit higher.

But these cards are so fast, OC is not really needed. I just OC to feed my OC habit and give me peace of mind knowing I am getting the max out of my investment. ;-)

My 570 overclocking experiences were underwhelming...so thinking of buying the factory-clocked 'golden chips' if they're not too expensive.

From what i've read, overclocking yhe gtx680 is more exciting.

Oz no specific recommendations there's a couple of options.

1. Buy from eBay from a reputable seller who has an ebay store.

2. Use a shipping service like http://www.priceusa.com.au

They do charge a fee but you can get a quote with no obligations. I've used them once before send had no problems.

Amazon is funny with some things. One week I bought my saitek yoke off there with shipping to Australia and the next week I was just browsing send for the exact same yoke they said shipping to Oz wasn't available. Some things they just don't seem to ship here. It seemed to be luck of the draw sometimes. Service wise they are great though.

Is there a version of 249 for those of us running HT OFF and 6 physical cores?

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

62, 61, 59, 55, 47 or 31 should all give similar result on a 6core with HT off. That gives you 4 texture loaders, all on separate cores. If you really want texture loading, enable HT and use 4089. Multicore and hyperthreading is good for high-res photo scenery, but it won't give you higher FPS.It still fascinates me that FSX can make use of pretty much any hardware you throw at it. (what people have to remember is that some hardware is only of benefit in very specific scenarios). Cool to see that even more than 2GB VRAM can be of use at certain times. What AA settings did you use Efrain?

I'm using 8xS AA, 16xAF and 2xSGSS @ 1280x800 because that's my PJ's native resolution. I can up it to 1920x1080 and it doesn't affect the GPU one bit.

The difference is that 84 gives you 2 texture loaders, where both have their own core. While 249 gives you 5 texture loaders where one has its own core while the others are hyperthreaded. 84 gives you higher FPS while 249 gives you faster texture loading at a slightly lower FPS. Texture loading can benefit a lot from hyperthreading. FPS won't.

I run HT on af249 @5.3 works really good

Thanks ant.

I buy a lot of camera gear from the US - same experience as you with amazon. You'll buy three similar things and then find out at checkout that two don't ship here. Amazon basically just likes trolling Aussies.
