December 27, 201213 yr Commercial Member For those that always like to say a 4GB videocard is overkill and not really needed unless you run multimonitor setups and uber-high resolutions, well let me tell this... I just did a test flight using the default C172 (using the RealAir FS9 air file) from KRIC to Norfolk NAS with TileProxy set at 30cm, level_mapping=9,10,11,14,14,14,15,16,17,18,19, and the flight was 100% stutter free and as sharp as can be. When I checked my VRAM usage via PrecisionX, my VRAM usage at one time peaked at 2.8GB while it averaged around 2.6GB the whole flight. This would have choked a 2GB card and murdered a 1GB card. This is using TP, REX and UTX (even though UTX is just for 3D night lighting). Just wanted to point this out, where it clearly shows that when it comes to photoreal scenery such as TP, a 4GB card is the way to go. December 27, 201213 yr Interesting. Next thing on my list should really be a new GPU as my GTX460 really isn't up to the job.

December 27, 201213 yr I wonder if you'd find the same with regular hi-res photoscenery? I'm just on the cusp of buying a new video card and had dismissed 4G as unnecessary. Now look what you've done :-) Also curious about HT on? Thanks, Scott

Now look what you've done :-) Also curious about HT on? Thanks, Scott I haven't tried with regular hi-res photoscenery. As for HT ON... I was NOT able to use the above settings with HT OFF. I would get lots of stutters and even pauses that would last from 1-3 seconds at a time! Very unplayable as a matter of fact. As soon as I enabled HT, everything went perfect. I really don't see why so many people dismiss 4GB cards as unnecessary. Could you please tell my financial controller that I also need that 4GB card? Is that the new term for WIFE? Regards, Efrain RuizLiveDISPATCH @ http://www.livedispatch.org (CLOSED) ☹️
December 27, 201213 yr Is that the new term for WIFE? Pretty much. We're not married but might as well be! I'm too free and easy with money (especially when it comes to cars and computers) she is very sensible (being an accountant). We meet somewhere in the middle most of the time

When she complains, tell her you can drop it down to a GTX680 4GB and meet her at the middle. Game over. December 27, 201213 yr Good to hear. I am planning on getting a 680 soon. I'm running a 27" with 2560x1440 resolution, so I am planning on getting the 4GB card. This just makes my decision easier. Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers

December 27, 201213 yr Author Commercial Member Bimmer, any comments on the 4gig with on-disk photoscenery? Sorry but I don't because I haven't tried it but I think it would still apply. I have no clue! Hahaha You would need to ask user Saab340, he knows a ton on the subject and was the one who suggested to me AM=249. As a matter of fact, he told me to try 241, 244 and 249. Both 241 and 244 gave me stutters. AM=249 was butter. - Sent from my rooted, Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus LTE smartphone via Tapatalk because haters gonna hate. December 27, 201213 yr AM=249 was butter. Well, if it works, it works, but that is bizarre. Unless I'm doing my bitmasking wrong, this would mean you're giving FSX both hyper and physical from Core 2 and 3, the hyper from core 1 and the physical from core 0 to work with - 11 11 10 01 (read right to left). Hmm. The 84 in Word Not Allowed's guide makes the most commonly held assumption that you don't want FSX to use HT even though you left it active in BIOS, basically masking off the so-called "virtual cores", as well as all of core 0 - 01 01 01 00. On my far more modest system, I actually get the smoothest performance leaving HT enabled in BIOS and no affinity mask - but I only modestly OC. The most common reason for turning off HT is it allows higher OC'ing and the idea that you gain more from higher clock speed than you do from HT - a tradeoff. As always, YMMV and there are many variables involved. Scott
