January 5, 201313 yr If, by proper, you mean that you'll need to know all the phraseology before hand, then no - you dont. However, if you dont know anything about the phraseology and the natural sequence of communication, then you will probably be quite lost. Very likely, you will also not be able to comply to atc instructions because you simply dont understand them. Here, you can have a look at my vatsim and fsinn tutorials and see if they may help you some: Check out the notes on my "vatsim holiday special" video for a standard ATC communication flow. January 6, 201313 yr For VATSIM do I need to know proper ATC phaseology? In my opinion, if you have used default atc, you should pick it up easily. A good practice is to park at a busy airport and monitor active frequencies. vatsim and fsinn tutorials Nice collection of videos Regards; Fritz

April 19, 201313 yr Most of the time ATC initiates communications by either issuing you an instruction or asking a question. You should carry out the instruction and repeat it, verbatim to the controller, finishing with your callsign. If it's a question, then answer it, and again finish with your callsign, eg: ATC: "Speedbird 123, descend altitude 'four thousand feet', Manchester QNH 9 9 8 hectopascals" You: "Descend altitude 'four thousand feet' on QNH 9 9 8 hectopascals, Speedbird 123" The only time you would need to initiate contact with ATC is to make a request or advise them of something, in which case you say who you are addressing, who you are yourself, and then your message, e.g:You, after transferring frequency: "East Midlands Radar, Jersey 123 passing altitude 'two thousand five hundred' feet, climbing flight level 'five zero' on Trent Two November departure. ckyliu, proud supporter of ViaIntercity.com. i5 12400F, 32GB, RTX4070, more in "About me" on my profile.
April 19, 201313 yr Slightly off topic: Dabbled in VATSIM, like it but the spotty coverage continues to be an immersion killer for me.
April 19, 201313 yr The coverage is a tricky thing. Imagine sitting there as the controller for an hour without one plane. I can't wait any longer for people to show up for service. At least on the flying side I am doing something when atc isn't around. Friday and Saturday nights are always the best. Justin

That's the best way to overcome low coverage. Lj. Prodanovic
