January 14, 201313 yr Commercial Member I love almost everything about DX10, especially the elimination of graphical spikes that I used to see with BP=0 on DX9. However one challenge remains, shimmering of ground objects and in particular winter trees (branches without leaves have lots of transparency inbetween) and airports in the distance. To get near to the level of quality I had with DX9, the following configuration is necessary: MultiSamplesPerPixel=8 MultiSampleQuality=8 8xSGSS Of course, it's not long before this is a frame rate killer whenever significant clouds are involved. So my question is, is there some other way to do this or should I really be lowering my expectations of image quality a little for DX10? Simon www.supertrafficboard.com
January 14, 201313 yr That's the one that does the most at this moment, Simon. Of course there are various "extra" settings one can try and add to those three, such 4xS, or FXAA, and the addons like SweetFX, but SGSS is the only thing (that I know of), which stops shimmer - (and my Profiles folder is littered with them). i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.

I was plagued with 'shimmers' (I think!) switching on FXAA via NI fixed it pretty well. I did not notice any reduction in performance and the aircraft preview image was also a lot better. Kelvin
January 14, 201313 yr Author Commercial Member Would you mind sharing your Nvidia Inspector settings please? I'm not sure if I have it working or not. Simon www.supertrafficboard.com
January 14, 201313 yr Darn. I switched on FXAA for some on-line flying this afternoon, and there was lots of shimmering, so i'll put it back to just the plain 8xSGSAA and see what happens in the same area. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
January 14, 201313 yr Would you mind sharing your Nvidia Inspector settings please? I'm not sure if I have it working or not. Simon Select the MS Flight Simulator X profile and set Nvidia Predefined FXAA Usage to Allowed and set Toggle FXAA on or off to On. Don't bother setting the FXAA indicator On - it just puts a green square in the top left hand corner of the display to show FXAA is On It should look like the attached screenshot
January 16, 201313 yr Author Commercial Member Thank you everyone for the help. After many trials I found the following to be a good combination: MultiSamplesPerPixel=4 MultiSampleQuality=8 4xSGSS (No FXAA) (No SweetFX) It's not DX9 image quality (at 2xSGSS), but I think it's something I can live with. Flying in low visibility or in summer also helps! Sometimes that's working my graphics cards pretty hard, we'll have to see if there are any cloud combinations that kill it. But for now all is good, at last I can do some "proper" flying in DX10. www.supertrafficboard.com
January 17, 201313 yr I use these settings for DX10 preview: fsx.cfg: MultiSamplesPerPixel=4 // using 8 is a huge perfomance killer for a very small improvement MultiSampleQuality=16 // this enables nvidia 16x AA NI: 4xSGSS It looks that all other settings in NI, other than FXAA, are ignored. I too any am an IQ freak and spent lots to time to end up where you also ended up. I've found these settings to be so close to what I had in DX9 that I've now forgotten what I had in DX9 (though this is what I'd be sorely missing if I went back to DX9: environment bloom, VC shadows and bloom, much better looking water and overall better visuals and performance). To see the IQ I get, check out these DX10 screen shot I made:http://forum.avsim.n...s/#entry2569390. Fortunately I don't use any add-ons which suffer major DX10 compatibilities issues (but I do sometimes miss using UTX street lights at night). Enjoy! January 17, 201313 yr Thanks Rod - I will try this one today. I never thought to move the MSQ up to 16 in the cfg. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
January 17, 201313 yr Author Commercial Member Thanks from me too. I gave it a try, and while it looks great when the simulator is paused as soon as we are on the move the shimmers are still there and still slightly worse than those I see in DX9. So I guess it's a trade off, loose a little in image quality to gain all the DX10 features you describe (at least it's that way on my PC). Simon www.supertrafficboard.com
January 17, 201313 yr What shimmering do you still find bothersome? I find that airfield stripes shimmer the worse, as do straight edges in the VC though only by tiny amounts (essentially I have to stare to find them). Autogen trees look fine on my system. 8xGSAA will help with the trees if necessary, though it comes with a performance hit. Recently I ran a DX9 test to compare these shimmers and found that DX9 AA wasn't perfect using NI 8xS + 2xGSAA (it was only marginally better at best; higher DX9 AA settings choked my performance to unacceptable levels). January 17, 201313 yr May I inquire as to where in FSX.Cfg you place the multisample lines ? Under [Display] maybe ? Thanks, jime James D. Edwards
January 17, 201313 yr Hi Jime - yup - under [Display] You can play with the numbers, though I never tried 16. i7 [email protected] | 32GB RAM | EVGA RTX 3080Ti | Maximus Hero VII | 512GB 860 Pro | 512GB 850 Pro | 256GB 840 Pro | 2TB 860 QVO | 1TB 870 EVO | Seagate 3TB Cloud | EVGA 1000 GQ | Win10 Pro | EK Custom water cooling.
