February 1, 201313 yr There must be something to this, because even with the changes in the aircraft file made and saved, the OS will not read the changes. This apparently means that you have to install software with the UAC turned off if you are ever going to want to add new paints or modify the tail-draggers to respond to a joystick instead of break pedals. Whatever the reasons for the creation of Windows 8 were, they're lost on me. Give me a simpler world, please? Before you start to read this post, I have Fs9 installed and working under Windows 8 pro, so I am not guessing at the following solution. To disable UAC control navigate to Control Panel and select View by:"small icons". Next select "User Accounts\Change User Account Control Settings and move the slider down to "Never notify" Click "OK". While you are in User Accounts, click on "Change your Account type" and make sure that you are an Administrator. To avoid your present problems, it is very well documented that third party software should not be installed into "program files" or "program files (86)". This is not new and applied to Vista and Windows 7 also. You can either uninstall Fs9 and then re-install it into another location or use the following guide. I suggest that you make a new folder, either on your "C" drive but not in either "program files" or "program files (86)" or any other folder, but ideally on another drive, call it "Flight Simulator 9" and copy all the files from your whole installation into it. Once you have done that, use this tool http://www.flight1so...stry_Repair.exe to amend the Fs9 registry entry to point to the new location. This will allow any further self installing addons to find the correct location. Once you are happy with the new location, ironically, although you cannot edit files in the protected location, you can delete them altogether. Whether you have re-installed or followed my guide, navigate to your Fs9.exe file, open its properties and set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows 7 and as an administrator. Make sure you apply these changes. Once you have done this, you will find that Fs9 will work properly and that you will be able to edit anything in its new location.
February 1, 201313 yr Commercial Member I've got Win 8 and installed FS9 in it's default location, then set the folder rights for the "Users" group as I suggested earlier. in explorer, right click on: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9 and choose Properties now choose Security now Edit choose "Users" from the list check Modify and Write OK - OK - and allow to set on all folders and files That's all there is to it. Then when you install addons they can read/write the FS9 folders. If you edited and saved changes to a file and FS9 does not read the changes then it is not the file that FS9 is reading so you are probably editing a copy. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
February 1, 201313 yr Commercial Member ...some addons may try to access the Admin only area of the registry and these have to be set for "Run as Admin", there's no way round it. FSX suffers all the same issues, but you wouldn't need to worry about security if the addon was written correctly: Example Ideal Flight for FSX. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
February 1, 201313 yr Win 8 ................. Bill M Win8 beta tester Hi Bill, Are you able to talk about the issue of the yoke/joystick issue in Win 8? I assume that you are an FSX/FS9 user, and might further assume that you tried these programs in Win 8 during beta? Did you ever see the yoke/joystick issue arise then? Sorry to hijack the thread. Thanks, Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
June 23, 201312 yr I can save the ac cfg okay after following the instructions above but the aircraft does not show up on the FS9 ac menu... Ed Ryan
November 15, 201411 yr I have Windows 8 aswell and whenever I am not checking the Direct X option in the settings, when I start a new flight I get the same fatal error. Just make sure that the Directx is checked.
December 26, 201411 yr Author I didn't see a mention of choosing the option for "show hidden files" in the Control Panel. That's a must.
